Title: ** INTRODUCING: NEW BETA VERSION OF AVAST - NOW 6.0.1364 **
Post by: Vlk on November 12, 2011, 07:24:08 PM
The update has now been officially release as version 6.0.1367. See here (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=89262) for details.

Thanks to anyone who helped testing the beta version.

Hi everyone,

we will soon be releasing a new program update of avast. As usual, we're making it available for public testing a few days before the official release. The current version number is Edit Nov 24: 6.0.1364.

This is hopefully going to be a smooth service release, mainly designed to fix some of the issues of the previous v6.0 builds. It also moves us a bit closer to the release of v7, slated for Q1 2012.

Here's an [incomplete] list of the most important changes:
- Script Shield now works with Google Chrome, all versions of Firefox and Acrobat Reader
- Improvements in WebRep plugins (especially IE)
- Stability improvements in aswSP.sys and the avast! sandbox
- File system shield: improved on-close scanning
- avast! Internet Security: new antispam engine
- Web Shield and Script Shield: more options in the UI

The UI of the new version also includes the avast! Market, a new way to get info (and potentially try/buy) other avast products. This section can be hidden by disabling the avast! recommendation features in the avast! Community settings.

Download links:
links removed.

You can either install from scratch, or over an existing installation of avast (any version).
Users of the previous beta can also use the normal in-product updater.

Thanks
Vlk

OK, downloading again and will install over the top of 6.0.1289.

This installation gives the Update option screen and that is what I have chosen, Restart screen on conclusion.

About to reboot.

There is no duration, as the whole point is for people to try it and ensure there aren't any hiccups on their systems. If there were it would depend on hoe serious that was and if it was crucial how long it would take to fix.

So you can't quantify that duration and equating it to the last beta is comparing apples and oranges.

Previously, the scanning of created/modified files was governed by the file's extension (there was a list of filename extensions). Now, all executable files are scanned, irrespective of their extension.

Because we usually use the beta section only for bigger betas, such as for major releases (e.g. V7 next year). The "small" betas usually don't have too many issues and therefore we don't reopen the beta section for those.

@Vik

A suggestion:

I know that you list the changes to the latest releases of avast! including Beta's within each new update thread that you post on this forum.

Just a thought.

It may be helpful to some to have two links on both the avast! website and here.

One link would take you to a list of all changes like the ones you post here from the last 4.x official RTW version to the latest RTW version showing the changes in each version.

The other link would be do the same for all the changes in all the beta releases since the last official RTW version.

This would be helpful to current users still on older RTW versions of avast! who are considering upgrading to the latest RTW version of avast!  It would also be helpful for beta testers to track all the beta changes since the previous official RTW version.

However an alternative would be to to put the first link on both the forum and the avast! website and put the Beta updates link only on this forum.

Updated fine from Avast 6.0.1289 to 6.0.1352 Beta.  Fortunately, I missed the 6.0.1351 beta due to being busy. ;D  All settings were preserved.  Received VPS update after beta overinstall and did a Quick Scan.  Small amount of web surfing and have seen no problems thus far.

I did notice that most (all??) Avast files are 6.0.1351 version.

All seems to be well.

But Secunia files are not scanned.  Some files could not be scanned: "Error: Password protected."  This has not happened before the beta.  (Outlook.pst often will not be scanned, but was this time.)

I'm hoping detection will be improved with these newer versions.

The scanning functionality is fully contained inside the virus definitions, so it's not possible for the beta do behave differently - the modules are the same. I'd say it's more likely that the scanned files got changed in between, for example.

A common misspelling of a word that seems so easy to spell that it hurts your brain when it's actually misspelled in this fashion. Even if you sounded out the word "coming" phonetically, to try and spell it, you would not get anything resembling "comming."

Can be found most often on internet message boards and "Comments" sections.
People's obsessions with improper spelling are comming to an apocalyptic climax.

Interesting

I use Secunia PSI

avast! ran a "Full Systems Scan" on my desktops late last night and the scans did not give me that message on any of the Secunia files.   Though it did give me that message on other files.

I'm keeping Immunet 3 as a 2nd layer of protection. Disabling everything won't get this latest version of Avast Beta working for the autosandbox tool!!! :o So I gues not installing from scratch may be is the problem. Trying the sandbox browser now 8)

The reasoning is that fences isolates areas of the desktop.

Of course, you have to double-click the test-file autosandboxme.exe to test the feature and "YES"...it works ;)
Anyways, Immunet 3 catches it even before it lands on your PC 8)

I had install it over the top.
I also try a clean install. ( with the avast unistall utility and reboot)
It dosent work.
Also i had 3 files that trigger it and now if i remove them from the exception list of autosandbox's shield, it dosen't work.
It simple i cant trigger autosanbox with the new vrsion.

AutoSandbox doesn't seem to work for me.

Run the autosandbox program, get an alert, press ok to sandbox it, no red border and the reg file is written.

(This is different to my issue with fences I believe)

Another way to test auto-sandbox is to install RadioSure and run it.  It should auto-sandbox.

In all the time that Avast has had the sandbox feature i have never seen it run.It is set to "Ask" whatever that does
I have tried the sandbox tool that does nothing either other than to tell me in a plain box"modify the system"

windows t sp1
malwarebytes free
windows firewall
avast free beta 2

so i tried install this version over Avast 4! install on Windows XP 32bit Sp3 machine

result after reboot was BSOD on boot
(this BSOD does not wait to generate minidump, yet the OS can invoke minidump fine if i do it manually)

only solution to fix was remove C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\aswSnx.sys
then OS boots fine and Avast! seems work fine

With such a large gap inbetween versions it is always recommended to do a clean install since avast 4 to avast 6 are like chalk and cheese.

i said i installed over Avast 4, which includes uninstall and restart, i said the Avast 4 was removed properly
nothing else
the BSOD is related to some issue with the autosandbox or behaviour shield or w/e similar ...

So, tried this version with a fresh install.

Firewall is set to "Ask". It fails utterly to do so. I have accessed the internet from several browsers and applications, run updates from 10+ programs and not one single challenge and there are no Application Rules set by avast for these.

Firewall logs are empty after an hours browsing and using updates etc. and logs are not showing any network connections either.

Go to "Statistics" page and at the bottom left we have a link that says :

Click here to see your complete security reports for the last 30 days.

What this actually does is open a browser window and feed you spam about buying more new products ......... (http://www.avast.com/en-gb/index?utm_source=prg_ise_60_0&utm_medium=prg_lnk&utm_campaign=paid2paid&utm_content=prg_ise_en-gbsecurity-report&p_var=.%2Fprg_ise%2Fen-gb%2Fsecurity-report&p_pro=2&p_vep=6&p_ves=0&p_lqa=0&p_lsu=24&p_lst=0&p_lex=353&p_lng=en&p_lid=en-gb&p_elm=58&p_vbd=1352 )

No, I don't want Password keepers, Backup systems or any other spam thrown at me from the GUI of a security application, I want the application to function and keep things OUT of my PC.

(Tried Repair and a fresh install and it's still the same.)

Had you read the topic you would have seen this question was asked and answered. The landing page for the new monthly security report isn't complete, so essentially you are redirected to the main avast page.

This is one of the beauties of beta testing, some stuff won't quite be ready.

Spelling Error. Not sure what English is used but in North America it's "Coming" not "Comming". If another English is used perhaps having seperate English like English UK, English USA, English Canada

Crap, it is still blatant and unacceptable advertising, if the page isn't ready they should have killed the link or had a landing page with a notification.

Avast are adding advertising links to premium products and really annoying customers, I get dozens of queries a week as to why it is there and how to remove these things.

As to beta, this is pre alpha quality at best, the firewall is not doing anything.

To be clear, I might agree with you in some of your comments, but if you want to report issues of this version, please open a new topic and provide additional info so the devs can replicate the problems and develop a solution.

Thanks.

ok so something is not right
1.
i noticed that IE9 and sometimes also FF get hang on new tab and do nothing,
when i look into the tab's threads then i noticed it seems to be stuck with AswJsFlt.dll module

2.
i just got BSOD with blabling about aswSP.sys ,wich is the self protection driver
now the funny part, i have this as disabled in avast settings (troubleshooting)

i can't serve minidumps, as for some reason my Windows 7 refuse save any OS crashdumps (mini, kernel, full)
(i can't figure out what cause it, only what comes to my mind is some driver prevents dumps write)

no problems here updating from 6.0.1289 stable to 6.0.1352 beta and it runs as good as the stable version.. maybe even better than the stable version.. used to have a lot of connectivity problems with avast in 6.0.1289 and have noticed none since upgrading.. so i know it has something to do with avast.

I'm still having the problem I mentioned earlier.  Sometimes things like this happen and the next virus update resolves it.  I was hoping that would happen with this but it hasn't thus far.  I certainly don't want to exclude all those files (which is over 100).

"...Secunia files are not scanned.  Some files could not be scanned: "Error: Password protected."  This has not happened before the beta.  (Outlook.pst often will not be scanned, but was this time.)"

Everything else seems to be going well.

Just wondering if im the only one here having this problem, but the Script Shield hasn't scanned anything for Google Chrome(or anything at all for that matter), I dont know if its the pages im visiting, or something else. I first installed the one that didnt come with an upgrade option and even then nothing was scanned since then, ive updated it over the current beta with the one that did come with the update feature both by update over it, and a clean install(used the avast removal tool).

@Vlk

That didn't help. This is quite difficult to test since it doesn't happen every shut down/reboot, but I noticed that when I rebooted my computer after automatic def update and before the next update check, I got the event log error despite that last*.dat exclusion setting. I didn't get the error after that when I rebooted several times.

So, it could be that this happens only when computer is rebooted /shut down after automatic def update and before the next check. I don't know...

Are you referring to the on-demand or "real-world" tests?

BTW we have quite high expectations of a big gun called "version 7".
Hopefully, it will change your perception little bit.

I only changed the log file size after the first crash but it was still set that way when i had the second crash which i sent to you, the other issue with windows not shutting down properly was there before and after changing the log size though.
Iv now set the log size back to default.

@craigb and Vlk, My apologies for interrupting your conversation.

I don't think the 32KB limit "alone" should be the cause of that problem. My GUESS is based not because I have some real input, but because other users have that same setting at 32KB under 6.0.1352 but no crashes.

So in case it has some relation, then something additional might have some part in it.

If craigb won't have the same type of crash with the default setting, then some testing (or playing around) with that setting might be needed anyway.

Well, OTOH, I can be completely wrong :(.

Just got it again and this was after changing the logs back to default, not much info is given though as it happens on shutdown so there is no crash dump

The previous system shutdown at 2:44:13 AM on ‎11/‎17/‎2011 was unexpected.

Vlk let me know if there may be something in any of the logs which i can post.

Are you referring to the on-demand or "real-world" tests?

Both.

Instead of adding more bells and whistles how about improving the slipping detection rates? For the last several months I've been watching them do downhill over at av-comparatives.org.

Are you referring to the on-demand or "real-world" tests?

BTW we have quite high expectations of a big gun called "version 7".
Hopefully, it will change your perception little bit.

Monthly avast! detection in this section has been going down.  In Sept it was ranked 13th out of 17 programs and had been falling for months for some reason.

Having said that, I'm anxious for the new 7 when that comes out and am looking forward to renewing my subscription for another year.

My apologies if I missed this already being discussed a long the line, but my WebRep is not working in FF 8.  Possibly I'm the only one.  It works in Chrome (which I don't use).

It shows as being installed and I uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin but to no avail.  It's not even listed as disabled in "Add ons."

When you updated to firefox 8.0 you should have had an add-on screen to allow you to enable third party add-ons such as the webrep, did you get that and check the option to allow webrep ?

I'm still having the problem I mentioned earlier.  Sometimes things like this happen and the next virus update resolves it.  I was hoping that would happen with this but it hasn't thus far.  I certainly don't want to exclude all those files (which is over 100).

"...Secunia files are not scanned.  Some files could not be scanned: "Error: Password protected."  This has not happened before the beta.  (Outlook.pst often will not be scanned, but was this time.)"

Everything else seems to be going well.

No problem here with Secunia files being scanned. I was also able to scan the Secunia files without an error message using "Scan from Windows Explorer"  AIS even scanned the "SUA" folder which Windows won't allow me to open.

1.  Tests are performed under Windows XP SP3
2.  Browser used is Internet Explorer 7
3.  Adobe Flash Player ActiveX 10.0
4.  Adobe Player Plug-In 10.1
5.  Java 6.0.140

I sure hope that there current tests are using up to date software. I put no value in tests that use outdated software.  Adobe Flash 11.x was released Oct 3rd

Java 7 was released July 28th

XP3 is archaic and IE7 is junk

ISTM that people really need to understand how tests are performed and know all the software that is used in the test before talking about them.   Now I don't know what software was used in their Sept tests so it is possible that they used W7 x64 along with Firefox or at least IE9 or the latest version of Chrome.   However, the fact that their testing as late as last June was still using Windows XP3 and IE7 makes me very hesitant to accept any of their numbers.

I have posted before how AIS interacts with a bad URL differently when you access the URL using IE9 vs the current release of Firefox.  I know this because I tested it on one of my computers and got different results.

I got the add-on screen when I installed 9.0B1 and an enabled WebRep so that might have now superseded the need for the Add-On Compatibility Reporter.

I have to figure out how to do multiple quotes. ;D

Yes, I understand about the outdated software you mentioned, but all AVs were tested under the same old software and therefore it seems a "somewhat" fair comparison.  Would not the up to date software simply point to them doing the work of catching virus' and the like, not the AV itself?  I would think that updated software won't make any AV inherently better--only look better in tests because it didn't allow for a vulnerability to be exploited in the first place.  Had the software been current it would have been a better test to be sure, but likely all AVs would simply have done better.

Maybe my thinking is all wrong here.  I don't think such tests are the end-all, I just think they provide one additional piece of information to consider.

I'm not a tech person by any means, thus I like to be informed and learn from people who are and know more than me (which is a lot), in this and a few other forums.

The reason I don't agree is because ISTM that you are assuming some things that I don't agree with.

1.  That all software updates are equivalent when it comes to security.
2.  That the Browser has no or very little impact with regard to Malware protection.
3.  That the Operating System has no or little impact with regard to Malware protection
4.  That all AV programs work just as efficiently with regard to Malware detection irrespective of what Browser, and Operating System you are using with the AV.
5.  That Flash for IE is going to be just as secure as Flash for non-IE browsers.
6.  That same for Java as with Flash

Thanks for trying to help me better understand, but maybe I wasn't clear.  I agree that all those things are important to security.  Let me try another way: I don't think that updated software will make any AV program itself inherently better--only look better in tests (equally so for all AVs), because the current updates would have allowed for a vulnerability to be exploited in the first place.  Thus the current software would be doing the catching of some problems before it got to the AV in the first place.

I understand how current software makes a computer more secure, but how would those things make, say avast, score better and not equally raise the score for all or most others?  I'm thinking the current software would simply make for fewer vulnerabilities in the first place, for the AV to have to react to--but this would be true of all AVs equally.  In the end it seems the current software would make for fewer AV responses and would not necessarily indicate the AV better or worse itself.  But like I said, I'm not tech person, I'm just trying to think through it.

Folks, please open separate topics for specific issues (independently if the issue is related to the current Avast beta), and leave this one for relevant posts.

The FF version and WebRep is one. The AV comparatives and test is another one.

It is already not so easy to track down / follow this topic as it is.

Thanks.

Thanks for keeping us on track.

Since I could not get WebRep to work in FF 8 or 9 Beta and tried to uninstall. All I got was a black box saying it was uninstalling but nothing was happening.  Had to use the clean tool to remove avast beta.

I still can't get webrep to work now even with the stable avast and back to FF 8 (stable).

craigb, can you confirm, that you'll get these shutdown warnings only when you shut down or reboot your computer after virus definitions update? And you will not get these warnings until the next definitions update? That's what I think is happening to me.

Well yes it's only after a reboot but i dont think it has anything to do with the def updates, just when the action center updates itself after rebooting im finding.

Nothing to do with Avast, it's a windows problem, do you have Vista or 7? There is a different fix for each.

It is still there even in the beta build, it is off by default as many people don't share your feeling about it being displayed and is OS dependant.

It worked fine in 1289 and also works in 1352 but I did not like it so I disabled it like DavidR

In that case, open this Microsoft KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-US;2545227), and click on the "Fix it" button.

Then why post this in the ** INTRODUCING: NEW BETA VERSION OF AVAST - NOW 6.0.1352 ** it has nothing to do with the beta build and as mentioned others have no problem with it in 6.0.1289.

Your signature also misses a crucial point what Windows version you are using and  if 32/64bit as fully up to date windows could mean anything from win2k upwards all of which could be fully up to date and run avast6.

I think it has something to do with the def update process. I just compared my Windows event log and avast setup.log and got these results:

***
16.11.2011 12:30 PM avast update
16.11.2011 12:31 PM reboot --> ERROR
17.11.2011 12:15 PM avast update

18.11.2011 05:03 AM avast update

18.11.2011 08:21 AM reboot OK
18.11.2011 10:23 AM avast update
18.11.2011 12:51 AM reboot --> ERROR
18.11.2011 01:05 PM reboot OK

18.11.2011 07.50 PM reboot --> ERROR
18.11.2011 11.25 PM reboot OK

I get always that event log error 6008 during the next reboot after avast has updated itself. I don't get those errors at any other times when rebooting my computer.

Comming back to that "system was not shut down properly warnings", I monitored my system for the last 24 hours and came exactly to the same findings and obviously to the same conclusion.
There must be some relations between avast! update and the "system was not shut down properly warnings".

The stable build 6.0.1203 was the last one which didn't have this issue. It's been there since.

Not to lower the priority, but to delay the update check. Try a forum search for AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds and you will find lots of hits on how to delay it.

I only get some hesitation when Avast updates at boot time, especially on the single core XP machine. It's much less noticeable on this one. When it updates during normal usage, I never notice anything until the popup tells me it has updated again.

@DavidR - it's not related  to AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds ...

i simply want set Avast to use low or lower priority for anything related to activity in updates ...

Of course it would be related, delay the update check until it is well after the boot and additional cpu activity for the auto update (which is limited in its resource use, but not priority) wouldn't impact so much on boot time.

I presume Dwarden is talking about Avast! updating causing lag when gaming, not when booting.

I don't make an assumption as over several posts he never once mentioned gaming. There than his gaming banner in his signature, which unfortunately states nothing of his system spec. Though I haven't come across a serious gamer that hasn't got a high performance system and I wouldn't have though that would have much of an impact on a gaming system.

But for some considerable time the auto update has been throttled so that it doesn't consume too much resources (I think it is set to use less than 30%).

Hi Avast team,

Thank you for this new beta version of Avast! (6.0.1352) I am testing it and find that it is working well for me.
However I have noticed that the notification box does not pop up when the automatic update has been received and I used to get the pop up box on my screen after every update, all three boxes are checked (ticked) 1. Ask for reboot when needed.  2. Show notification box after automatic update.  3 Show notification box if an error occurs, but I don't get ANY pop ups on my screen at all. :(  :(

Thanks

happy avast user

Users of the previous beta can go to this build by simply invoking the in-product update feature.

Main changes include speed optimizations in the updater, little fix in the Web and Network Shields, and added localizations.

Hello vlk

I've just updated from 1352 to 1354 ... and found some issues - after the update I've lost the sandbox and the antispam modules from the GUI. Also no firewall tab and I cannot access the Resident Protection tab on the interface (the tab just won't open). I'm using Win 7 Pro x64  :-\

edit - also I cannot stop the program (the options from the tray icon does not work)

After this update (1354), now my inernet connection is almost useless, I have to reload pages most of the time, because I keep losing connectivity.
Plus, the SUMo issue still persists.

Both under xp64.

Bottom line: avoid this update.

Update to AIS 1354 results: update went fine, reboot as required. Problem#1 Real-Time Shields tab does not work (nothing happens when you click); Problem #2 Firewall tab does not show. Windows Action Center does not complain so apparently this is a GUI problem only. Working on Win 7 Pro 64.

Baloney.

Alphas may not have significant problems but not Beta's.  At least not of a program that is in release version 6.x and of which there is no major re-write.

This is just lousy internal control on avast! part, period.

Installed 6.0.1354 no problems at all. Have Windows XP Home with Windows7 Firewall control. The only thing that I can criticise, is that Weprep in Internet Explorer give a whole toolbar to be able to show. Having an extra toolbar is not good on my NetBook, as I loose about 8mm from my page screen view.

New version(6.0.1354) installed itself without any problems via GUI. It seems to be working fine, although I can't access Real-time shields tab in GUI and stop real-time shields via tray icon.

Why can't Webrep be tucked away as it is on Google Chrome toolbar?
There was some discussion about this before. It has always been this way. Essentially, to make the icon changeable, so you can have different colours, it has to be on a toolbar.
Since that was the point of WebRep, that is how it has to be.

What's the point of having twitter and facebook nonsense enabled to see the avast! Market ? It makes no sense at all...

"avast! recommendations" should be turned into separate "avast! Market" checkbox...

Couldn't agree more, when that social network branding cr*p came out I hated it. As soon as options were there to remove it, it was history. So to put something totally unconnected under that heading doesn't make sense as I doubt I was alone in removing this twitter/facebook branding.

So for me the loss of the Market is a small price to pay (no pun intended) if it meant getting the twitter/facebook branding junk. So as RejZoR said this needs its own checkbox.

Working fine on my XP Pro system.  ;D

I removed it because i can't have Twitter because someone "stole" my nickname and i don't use Facebook. Besides, what's the point of social features in antivirus software. It's like having Twitter and Facebook in a jet fighter. It's not relevant.

Anyway, what's the point in publishing a file so flawed it lacks major features EVEN THOUGH BETA. It's a lack of respect, a minimal testing before release is required in AILWIL lab. EDIT: Also noticed that I am seeing many more "The connection has been reset" messages in firefox recently...Click a link somewhere, and no loading is done, just get the message. Hit reload and it is fine...not sure of relevance, but worth noting.

To expand on this...

Today it has been rather annoying. I would say that at least one in five clicks results in the connection reset page...

This seems to have begun (this bad) with these betas.

Am I the only one?

Something new... Are you sure? I don't know if it was finalized, and if it is - it should have other build number, not 1345. Final number always is different comparing to latest BETA.

The beta has now been updated to build 6.0.1356.

BTW let me just say a few words about the dreaded 1354 update. This was probably one of the most interesting experiences we've ever had with a product update. The problem was related to this little item briefly mentioned in the revision history:

- speed optimizations in the updater

What this meant was that we rewrote a part of the updater which takes care of parsing of certain files in the avast SETUP folder. Now, the interesting part is that there was no problem with that code - it was implemented correctly, and thoroughly tested. However, there was a bug in a previous version of avast (probably all versions up to 6.0.1352) which caused one of the files to be malformed (under certain circumstances). The new optimized code didn't expect such a corrupted file though, and that resulted in the rather surprising symptoms many of you were experiencing - all sorts of erratic behavior.

This is also why the reaction to this build was somehow bipolar - either it was working perfectly fine (this was the case where the file had been OK) or it wasn't quite working at all (the case where the file had been corrupted).

The "fix" we implemented in v1356 allowed us to process both the valid and corrupted versions of the file.

Of course, let me apologize for any inconveniences this might have caused. This was a very interesting lesson for us - this was exactly the type of issue where external testing proved indispensable. However, this will hopefully allow us to also improve our internal QA process moving forward.

Thanks
Vlk

This was one weird experience.  See near the end of this post for even more weirdness.

When the Real-Time Shields and the Firewall did not show up in .1354 I decided to uninstall AIS using "aswclear6.exe".  I then installed MSE.

When I saw that .1356 was available correcting the problem in .1354 I uninstalled MSE and reinstalled AIS.

After the reinstall all my Custom Scans were gone along with the my Default Scan preferences which I expected.

However, what was weird was that that my Real-Time Shields personal perferences and Firewall personal preferences remained in tact from what they were on .1354 even though I uninstalled .1354 using "awsclear6.exe"

Everything appears to be in order.

Two bad Betas in less than 10 days is a bit much, eh

Thanks to the avast! team for jumping on this problem ASAP and fixing it.

Time to move on :), hopefully with better QA on avast! part.

However, what was weird was that that my Real-Time Shields personal perferences and Firewall personal preferences remained in tact from what they were on .1354 even though I uninstalled .1354 using "awsclear6.exe"

Some remnants of Avast are left out from the removal process, together with the folders. For some reason, the removal utility leaves the files it doesn't recognize as originally installed by Avast. Some folders will indeed be deleted no matter what (like the one in the respective selection of the removal utility), but some others ("data") will be left there. The original files are deleted, while the others are left.

This is the same behaviour that happens when a password for Avast was forgotten. After the removal utility and the re-installation, the password is still there. If you manually delete *all* remnants after the removal utility, the password is really gone.

When I have to use the removal utility, I run it from Windows Safe Mode, instead of trying to use it first from Windows Normal Mode.

Since I had this "unexpected shut down error (6008)" with version .1352 everytimes a new def update came in I reverted to version .1289 again and it was OK.

Now I tried .1356 as an over thetop update.
The error is immediately back after the first def update!  :o :o :o

Came back to .1289 and observing the system now. After the next update this evening I will report back!

Edit: First big def update of .1289 to current status folowed by a reboot did not show the 6008 error in the event viewer.

Andrey,pro,

"A special feature of the Professional Edition is PUSH updates. It is a dramatic change in the philosophy of updates. Usually, every installed program checks occasionally for new version availability. PUSH updates, however, are initialized by our server; they result in your computer quickly responding and performing the necessary update. The system is based on the SMTP protocol (as used for e-mail messages). The update itself is controlled by the avast! resident e-mail clients (MS Outlook and Internet Mail). The whole system is protected by asymmetric ciphers and is resistant to unauthorized misuse"

http://files.avast.com/files/manuals/user-manual-pro-eng.pdf

This function is in 6 versions of paid products Avast?

A never ending sad story (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=88735.msg709546#msg709546):

This time I made a clean install of .1356 and it seemed to work. After the first def update and a following reboot I had no sign of a 6008 error (Unexpected Shut Down).
After the evening def update I tried again, rebooted and here the devil showed his ugly face again Error 6008 in Reliability Monitor and in Event Viewer.
I have absolutely no clue anymore. ???

So I went back to version .1289.

@Vlk: Is there anyone with avast! who can find the cause for this behaviour?

Has nothing to do with the program version, any ad if delivered has nothing to do with the program version but marketing policy. But given as there is a new avast Market section in the new interface (which can be disabled) it may not be so prevalent. Though that isn't up to me but avast marketing.

Brockey, with all respect, you keep posting the same question over and over again (at least once a day, for like a week now).

The IS trial offer was displayed exactly once for each user of the free version (I think that was in September). Since that, nothing.

I can't say it won't happen again, but given its frequency I don't think it's such a big deal. Or do you think otherwise?

Thanks

You're welcome.

I think it is related, in that, rather than unchecking that 'anything connecting through http' option you can exclude a specific application, thereby retaining the additional level of protection for other non-browser http connections.

Just remember that if you are using the outgoing filtering of the Windows Firewall, the rules will be bypassed by the Web Shield if you don't restrict it to browser processes only.

It looks like we're getting closer to the official release.
The beta build has now been updated to version 6.0.1364.
This version should fix all the issues reported/discovered in build 1356 (with the exception of the mysterious 6008 event being written to the Windows Event Log during system shutdown).

Users of the previous beta can get this build by invoking the in-product update.

Thanks

On my W7 SP1 and W8-DP x64 dual-boot computer update to .1364 worked fine.

Another comment about the W7 and W8-DP dual boot set-up

When you are in W7, avast! will scan the W8-DP partition as well as the "FileHistory" folder created by the W8 backup. :)

I had to install this Beta version 6.0.1364 form scratch since I wanted to install it on the top of 6.0.1286 and it did not give me the Update Option and then it showed to install google chorme as if it was a version not installed in my PC, after that I said Next and it corrupted all files in version 6.0.1289, as I was not able to remove that version I had to go on safe mode and removed 6.0.1289 and install this one.

It seems working good here in my W/7 SP1 PC.

I will try it tomorrow in Windows XP SP3... rm

Installed the new 6.0.1364 on top of 1289(the last stable version) and after the reboot the registration info dissaperead, now my antivirus says ”you have 30 days to register”.

Btw, the installation method was ”installing over the stable one”

Autosandbox is not working for RAM drive (worked as Removable media)... :(
Autosandbox works on normal HDDs.

Autosandbox is not working for me either.  Tried running "autosandboxme.exe" and "OTL.exe" and neither one invokes the autosandbox feature of avast.  Currently running 6.0.1364 free.  Checked the settings and Autosandbox is enabled and set to "ask".

Just installed the latest free antivirus 6.0.1364 beta over 6.0.1289 and it did not do it as an update but a fresh install, and i had to re-register it again !

This is on a windows 7 32bit netbook.

OK correction, it works on my system, but not on anything that is on my pc...so if I run autosandboxme.exe from a flash drive, I get the popup...(from what I can tell)

I'm slightly confused by your posts :)
So, which is it - the autosandbox popup doesn't appear at all, or it does but (after selecting to sandbox the application) it doesn't get sandboxed?

Sorry. :)

ok...I'll try and describe it better.

C:\Users\Scott\autosandboxme.exe No AutoSandbox prompt, it just runs
C:\Users\Scott\Desktop\autosandboxme.exe No AutoSandbox prompt, it just runs
F:\autosandboxme.exe I get an autosandbox prompt (F:\ is a flash drive)

I did have an issue with Fences (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=88265.msg706906#msg706906) but this is different (I think). Even running from explorer the file does not get any sandbox alert.

After reading the above post I tried something similar. . . .

C:\Users\Bob\Downloads\autosandboxme.exe -> program just runs, i.e. no Autosandbox prompt nor red outline
C:\autosandboxme.exe                     -> program just runs, same as above
F:\autosandboxme.exe                     -> prompt from Autosandbox appears, and program has red outline when run as it should

Hopefully this helps identify where the problem might be . . . .

EDIT: same thing happens when using OTL.exe as the test file

Hello,

confirmed with Win 7 64Bit
If I start the Program from Drive D it works. If I start it from Systemdrive C it starts without Autosandbox prompt.

Igor,

See my post #342.  The F:\ drive that successfully ran the avast! Autosandbox on my system is not a removable drive.  It is a second SATA drive that is installed in my system.

I also took the liberty of trying the same "experiment" on my D:\ partition (which is on the same physical drive as my C:\ partition).  Autosandbox worked as it is supposed to.  Looks like something is messing with the Autosandbox feature when run on files that are on my C:\ partition . . . .

Sorry but I have to ask once more about the visual bug that I had mentioned previously: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=81028.msg663366#msg663366

It was explored and supported by jrace: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=81028.msg663387#msg663387

And yesterday in the Russian sub-forum we got complaints (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=88879.msg711409#msg711409) (it's the first in the list) about the bug. I advised to drag down a bit the bottom border of the main Avast window: if you drag enough to make the scroll bar disappear, the bug disappears too. But my advice only made the man angry: he insists that it is a bug to be solved by the developers, not by users. And I'd like to ask the developers if this bug will be solved.

Hi,

is it possible, that this is a problem with the rights restrictions at the system drive under Win 7?

Don't know.  I can tell you that the Autosandbox feature was working fine up until I installed the beta.  As far as I know, nothing else has changed on my system.

I have sent some additional information to the avast! team (requested by them) about this so hopefully they will be able to figure it out.  It might, however, be fairly elusive since it appears that only some people are having the problem.  We'll see . . . .

You have got to be joking, beta trials aren't without fault (because it will be deployed across a myriad of different systems), that is the nature of beta testing. Though I have had zero issues with this build and the last, I did have with the first release because of the installation package problem of it rolling back to the regular build (I didn't have an issue with the beta itself).

But that is neither here nor there, a beta is a beta is a beta, so asking if there are any problems before you are going to install it is crazy (your system configuration is likely to differ). You either accept the fact that beta builds may have issues and get on with it or you simply wait until the regular release if you can't accept that.

It's the autosandboxing feature itself that is not working - not the screen that allows you to choose its options and settings. ::)

Same here, autosandbox works on D drive but not on C drive. Both are on same disk.
Drive C -> No autosandbox prompt, no sandboxing
Drive D -> Autosandbox working normally
RAM drive (R:) -> Autosandbox prompt appears, no sandboxing
USB thumb drive (F:) -> Autosandbox working normally

Edit:
Huh, I found something strange...
Code: [Select]
2011/11/27 1:20:35 Autosandbox candidate: C:\autosandboxme.exe
[Source: local://*C:\windows\explorer.exe ]
[Opened by: C:\windows\explorer.exe]
--> Result: Not sandboxing (because the file is trusted).

There can be no time frame in beta testing, so the release version will only come when beta testing is complete.

RedioSure

1.  Sandbox "Exclusion" works
2.  Auto-Sandbox "Exclusion" works
3.  Running it virtualized appears to work with a red line around the GUI
4.  Auto-Sandbox does not appear to work.  RadioSure loads and there is red box around the GUI but most of the GUI is wiped out.  When I have run RadioSure before in the Auto-Sandbox, RadioSure ran in the red box.  Of course it did not save and Favorites and they were gone the next time RadioSure ran in the Auto-Sandbox.

I just updated i hope and pray nothing will make this computer crash or anything..

Also Avast! on the about avast! Tab or somewhere i think a feature to change channels like from beta channel to the stable release channels would be kinda good? like beta UI users now stay on the beta channel right? avast lets them know about a new beta.

A visual bug in Avast GUI is discovered. To reproduce it, make the following steps:

Quote
1) Open the Avast main window and go to the tab with types of scans (screenshot 1)

2) Expand the field with scan from Windows Explorer ... this error occurs when you move the scrolling bar down, but if you move it up or expand the window so that the scroll bar has disappeared, error does not appear (screenshot 2)

3) Close the window

4) Re-open the window: the scrolling bar disappeared and the Quick scan field is hidden under the tab's title (screenshot 3)

5) Expand any other field and the scrolling bar returns (screenshot 4)

This bug was noticed by Russian-speaking users in Avast Free and AIS on Vista and Windows 7 from version 6.0.1203 to version 6.0.1364, please correct this error!

Just updated to AIS 6.0.1364. I haven't looked through the entire thread to see if it's already been reported but apparently, (it's set to gaming mode) since installing AIS 6.0.1356 beta, auto definition updates haven't been happening.

Just automatically updated to the new virus definitions and the popup shows the old virus definitions version "111126-1" (see attachement), not the new "111127-0". After that when i right-klick on the avast tray to show the last popup it shows the correct version. I use german language version.

Actually avast offers something better than just a virtual keyboard, it has a whole virtual environement(a very secure mini OS ...aka SafeZone), in the paid versions only.
