Title: Avast IS failed to install firewall
Post by: nuyoknuyok on November 14, 2011, 10:57:57 PM
Hi guys,

I mentioned this problem as a side in other post I placed in the virus section, for an unrelated issue.

I restate it now as a general problem: I have Avast Internet Security trial version for about 10 days.
Before installing Avast, I uninstalled the previous AV (Norton) with Windows Add/Remove Programs and then run the Norton uninstalling tool.
I tried to repair Avast with Windows Add Remove Programs at the suggestion of Pondus, but to no avail.
I then uninstalled Avast IS with Avast uninstalling tool, rebooted, and reinstalled, but it again failed to install the firewall. Can you guys give me any help ?

Just to rule out somethings...did you use a cleaner like CCleaner?
http://filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
Did you follow the instructions http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
You may have a corrupt download. If all else fails try downloading a fresh copy   http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=88272.msg706930#msg706930

What OS are you using? What other security software do you now have or ever had? What do you use as a firewall, now or before?
Other security software may cause conflicts with avast.
To give further assistance we need more basic info.  :)

A second run of the Norton removal tool might be in order then i would run a search in your system for Norton and then Symantec.

I have Vista Home Basic 32-bit SP2.
This is what I did to follow you guys advice:

1) With Windows search, I typed 'Norton', and then 'Symantec', and erased a couple of items it found.

2) I run CCcleaner, and since I am not too familiar with this software,I didnt erase everything it proposed, but only references to Norton, and 'firewall' it found in the register.

3) I uninstalled AIS with the avast uninstalling utility.

4) I downloaded and installed a fresh copy of AIS (not the beta), but it failed again to install the firewall driver.

Go to safe mode and run Norton Removal Tool ;)

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton products from your computer.

1) (If possible) Remove Symantec products through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Norton_Removal_Tool_for_Windows_2000XPVista/1169144666/1) or Norton Removal Tool for Windows 98/Me (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Norton_Removal_Tool_for_Windows_98Me/1169144666/2). Boot.
3) Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.

OK, this is what I did just now:

1. Run Norton removal tool.Reboot.
2. Tried to repair Avast! through Add/Remove Programs.
   Avast didn't install the firewall.
3. Removed Avast! w/Avast removal tool.Reboot.
4. Downloaded a fresh copy of Avast!
5. Installed Avast. Failed again to install the firewall
   driver.

Yeah, the log says exactly that:

Code: [Select]
24.11.2011 19:36:22 system: Couldn't install the network component, returned 0x80070002.
But I need help from the programmers. Lukor?

Hi, I'm about to purchase the paid version of Avast IS,
but I haven't been able to have the firewall installed, even if I followed the kind advice that I received in this forum.
Is there any way to get an answer from customer support, or would somebody in the forum kindly suggest me what else to do ? Thanks in advance,

thank you for your answer Pondus. What would be the difference between Avast AVI with the Windows firewall as I have it now, and Avast Pro with the Windows firewall ?

@nuyoknuyok,

I would suggest running the removal utility for Avast, under Windows Safe Mode directly, repeating the procedure for ALL versions / editions you ever had or tried in your system.

Then manually delete any (possibly hidden) folder containing the words "avast" or "alwil".

Then completely disable your firewall.

If you had previous security tools that you think are already uninstalled, find their respective removal utilities and run them, also from Windows Safe Mode.

After all this is really clean, download the latest stable version of AIS and run the setup.exe with "right click -> run as administrator" (for Vista / Seven).

Reboot immediately after the installation finishes (before any configuration or update, just reboot).

You should be able to test all features of AIS, including the firewall, for 30 days. During the 30 days, if all goes as expected, buy your license for AIS.

did you try avast repair and reboot ?
For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow

PS: any previous installed AV you had before, must be removed before installing avast
it is also recomended to run a removal tool so all leftover files are gone
