Title: Registration renewal - V 6.0.1203
Post by: rubybear on November 22, 2011, 06:20:53 AM
I still have Avast Free version 6.0.1203, because I haven’t had time to backup all my files in case updating to the latest version crashes my computer.

My registration expires 12/21/11.  Will I be able to renew my registration while keeping the older version for now, or will Avast only renew if I update to the latest version?

I’m not having any problems, because I haven’t tried updating to 1289.  I saw so many people on this forum, especially those with Windows XP SP3 (like me), having BSOD’s & other issues, that I was afraid of updating.  Yes I’m a scaredy-cat!  My computer has been running so well with version 1203 that I didn’t want to rock the boat.  I know I’ll eventually have to update, but I’m waiting for a day when I can devote possibly several hours to fixing, uninstalling, reinstalling, etc., in case it doesn’t go well.

Thanks for the post, I’ll go ahead and renew my registration from the version I currently have.

@rubybear,

You shouldn't take the problems posted here as an indication of how the latest stable version is working. I mean that most users that are not having any problem won't post it, while the ones that are having problems may (or may not) post.

In fact, for XP, 6.0.1289 solved several issues that were present in 6.0.1203. Of course a backup is always a very good idea, and if it is working correctly on your computer, you are possibly doing the right thing (for now?).

I can't *guarantee* you that it will work correctly, but I wanted to try to "calm" those fears down (I am a simple but cautious user, not an Avast Team member). You could even wait some more days until the next release of Avast 6.x is out soon.

Not having time to backup all your files, smacks of not having a backup and recovery strategy and more importantly not having the software to make that task easier/quicker.

I use drive imaging software that makes an exact copy of your drive/partition, etc. etc. and I run that once a week, keeping copies of the last 5 backups for each partition it backup.

I still use Drive Image 7.1 the last version from PowerQuest on my XP Pro system(before it was bought by Symantec), but there are free versions of hard disk imaging software out there.

Incidentally I didn't have any issues with 6.0.1289 on this XP Pro SP3 installation, which is why you have to temper what you see on a support forum, as generally is is only people with problems come here, not those without issue.

So I would suggest that you investigate the drive imaging software to make life easier/quicker for backing up your system.

You are right, DavidR, I don’t have a backup strategy, and I know I should.  I’m not real tech savvy, and mostly use my computer for emails and research.  However, I also have a lot of pictures.  Once a month or so I copy them to CD’s, along with files that are important to me, but I have no system in place for backing up my programs.  I thought an external hard drive might be a solution, but do you think the Drive Imaging thing is a better way to protect myself?  I’ll have to check into that after the holidays.  Are you allowed to provide links to that software in these forum posts?

Thanks so much, I know this is now off topic.

I absolutely think drive imaging software is the way to go. Not just because it will backup your valuable pictures but because of the recovery aspect also.

My backup takes a few minutes (I run a tight ship on what is on my system) and if I experience a computer problem that is likely to take more than 20-30 minutes to resolve, I tend to restore the last drive/partition image I made and that usually takes me around 15-20 minutes tops.

I use a little tool called mirror, in conjunction with a batch file to backup my volatile data files, .doc, .xls, emails, bookmarks, etc. etc. and that is copied to a different partition (which is also backed up using the drive imaging software). This I run several times a day. Whilst this tool isn't very friendly there are applications specifically designed to backup this kind of data and many of the drive imaging applications have an incremental imaging option (unfortunately my old one doesn't).
