Title: need help immediately...trouble after update

I update my laptop which is a sony vaio windows 7
after update it asked me to reboot and I clicked yes
it started the reboot but was stuck on windows starting screen for about 5 minutes until I forced it to shut down.
I then restarted my laptop and a screen popped up saying

Your computer was unable to start
startup repair is checking your system for problems (and it goes on to say this will take a few minutes) it has not been about 10 minutes. it asked me if I wanted to do a system restore so I clicked yes and now its just loading and loading.
no progress...what shall I do

Do you use any other antivirus in this computer?
How did you remove it?
Any other security program that could interfere?
Can you boot Windows in Safe Mode?

well I let the startup repair finish but it did nothing
I then had to force shut down and it did and when I rebooted it gave me a screen again to either start up windows normally or use the startup repair. well needless to say I used the normally and it seems to be fine now thank goodness.
