Title: How do I install my downloaded Avast?
Post by: SlimSee on December 05, 2011, 04:29:08 AM
I am a newbie to Ubuntu 11.10, am running an HP desktop using XP. I got hacked and had to format C. While I re-installed XP, I then installed Ubuntu 11.10 (called running side-by-side?) and currently, Yikes!, have no virus protection. I searched the Ubuntu site, found Avast, did a download, have an email whose instructions seems to be for XP. I cannot find a way to run the download free Avast for my personal use. Help.

In the downloaded folder I think this file is what I need to "run."

avast4workstation-1.3.0-1.i586.rpm

When I right click for properties, I cannot find a program to open or run this... Help!

You need to download the .deb file instead of .rpm :)

I did finally notice that I had not downloaded a deb file. I followed your link and had no idea on how to run the terminal program.... but figured that out:

click on dash home icon, top left.

type in terminal

run it = purple screen
at prompt: :~S

type avast

I was prompted for the code I was email and using the mouse to copy and paste worked.

---  The avast program the scanned my machine in a couple of minutes and found nothing.
