So what's going to happen to Theft Aware? I only bought it yesterday so I'm a little ticked off that this has just been released for free...

It should work, even though the number of tablets we have tested it on was somewhat limited. Would be actually good if you could give it a try on yours and report back.

Can't wait to test it on my Cyanogen 7.1 powered HTC Wildfire. So far i've been on DrWeb Light but i'm switching for sure now that i can.

Just one question, what will be in the free version and what will be payable? I'm guessing anti-theft or at least the more advanced parts of it will be payable...

I will have to get back to you on this. I think it doesn't quite collect anything for now, but the idea was that it would allow us to gather data on app usage (reputation data that we can use to build a prevalence database).

Just one, maybe dumb question, is real-time scanner in this app? Couldn't find any mention of it.
Title: Re: ** INTRODUCING: avast! Mobile Security Beta **
Post by: chocholo3 on December 06, 2011, 09:05:24 PM
I've just installed it. The app itself is cool but I have few hints after few minutes of using it.
- It will be great to have an option for blocking outgoing SMS. At least if it's going to foreign country. It will be even better to deny SMS to any number which ain't in my contact list.
- Firewall is good but there is some weird colors in your skin. In every other program I've used there was red color for "denied" and green for "permitted". In avast! I've to try to set something up, try it (if I just permitted it or denied) and then go back and set all the other apps.
- WebShield will be awesome also in other browsers. I think there ain't a lot of people which uses default browser for usual everyday browsing...
- There should be some setup wizard after first launch. If I want to use this app I need to configure it but the clicking through the menu is annoying.

But it's super it's out and even free! I think all other free apps from market are lot of steps behind your back even if you have "just" beta.
Thanks!

Well, it is stand alone anti-theft app, some may prefer it, IMHO.

AFAIK only web shield.
Edit by Vlk: of course it is there ;) - Just try with an Eicar, for example.

Of course it's there (disregard chocholo's previous post).

- It will be great to have an option for blocking outgoing SMS. At least if it's going to foreign country. It will be even better to deny SMS to any number which ain't in my contact list.

We tried, but frankly, we don't know how to do that. There seems to be no mechanism that would allow us to do that.

Maybe something for rooted phones would be possible though...

- Firewall is good but there is some weird colors in your skin. In every other program I've used there was red color for "denied" and green for "permitted". In avast! I've to try to set something up, try it (if I just permitted it or denied) and then go back and set all the other apps.

Thanks for the suggestion, we will think about that.

- WebShield will be awesome also in other browsers. I think there ain't a lot of people which uses default browser for usual everyday browsing...

Same as before... it's not really possible to hook into the 3rd party browsers. In reality, it does somewhat work in Dolphin for example, but it's little bit unreliable -- hence we don't market it.

- There should be some setup wizard after first launch. If I want to use this app I need to configure it but the clicking through the menu is annoying.

I thought there was some kind of setup wizard already... The only important thing it doesn't cover is the anti-theft component, but this should be fixed before the official release.

But it's super it's out and even free! I think all other free apps from market are lot of steps behind your back even if you have "just" beta.

Thanks for that.

okmijnlp, Avast Mobile Security is a follow-up product whose feature set may be slightly different (in case of the anti-theft module). Nevertheless, if you're unhappy with your recent purchase, I think you should be eligible for a refund. Not sure what is the exact procedure of processing refunds of apps purchased through the Android Market though...

Thanks

I just installed it and ofcourse i like it...
BUT, you say the realtime protection is active, i downloaded the EICAR virus in the form of  .com and .zip file. Both successfully downloaded to my SDCARD, only after the manual scan it was found.

I run a rooted HTC DESIRE with a custom rom. I turned on the firewall and avast hang, and i have send a report. Dont know if it is going to avast or to the rom developer tho. The first time the firewall asked my superuser app for permission for root access (maybe theres the problem).
After the report, the firewall was on and i was able to turn on and of the firewall and individual apps for firewall.

maybe an impossible question right now but:  will there be integration or control from the SBC product for businesses?

Hello Vlk,
It installed on my Acer Iconia Tab A500 with Wi-Fi 10.1 without any problems and as far as I can tell is working.
The Android version that I'm running is 3.2

Here are some pictures:

The Tablet is still a new toy for me so I'm still trying to figure out all the ins and outs.
It certainly is different from a laptop.

Are there any settings that I need to know about ???

@Vlk,
I just saw the notice over at Wilders. Happy news!!

Could you describe a little bit about the firewall - can it control ports and protocols? Both directions?
Is a firewall really needed on Android which is a take on Linux, which has no open ports?
Can the unneeded features be not installed (for instance phone-related things on a tablet that's only wi-fi)?
Does the AV section see bad stuff before or after it installs?

Is there a writeup someplace, so I would not have to bug you with such questions?

I'm glad Avast has finally created a mobile security software and I'm aware it a beta stage, I feel a lot happier and safer choosing Avast and I knew they well create a mobile security.

Any way I don't fully understand what is an Android OS, cause my mobile is a Nokia 6700 slide, so I wouldn't know if Avast could make it capable please check while I wait for the final release. http://www.nokia.com.au/find-products/all-phones/nokia-6700-slide

Firewall on android is not like firewall on Windows. In fact a lot of things is just what a framework allows to the developer. And in case of andorid, it's just enable, block, wifi only, 3G only and roaming control. You can't control ports or protocols as its not necessary really.
Besides, why would you even bother with ports on a phone?

Hi Okmijnlp,

avast! Anti-Theft is the successor of Theft Aware - the next step in its evolution if you want to say so :-). And its free to all users. So no reason to get Theft Aware - go for avast! Anti-Theft. We'll stop selling Theft Aware licenses and get up a new website as soon as the avast! release announcements are published.

best regards
Reinhard

So what's happening to Theft Aware? Why should people get it if this is free?

avast! Anti-Theft can also be used as standalone Anti-Theft app, do not forget that :-)
Its standalone, but tightly integrated to Mobile Security.

All the features that Theft Aware had - and even more - are also present in avast! Anti-Theft!

Just one question, what will be in the free version and what will be payable? I'm guessing anti-theft or at least the more advanced parts of it will be payable...

We are giving away everything we've got for free.
There will be no premium (paid) version for the time being.

Is there info on what happens to Theft Aware customers?  I'm not seeing much in the forums at all.  I have the same question as others, and yes it was addressed in the post I quoted, but only partially.  It says "for the time being" which leads that there may be a paid version at some point.  Are our Theft Aware unbound licenses going to transfer?

As well, I think maybe some communication would be grand.  Maybe sending an email to all Theft Aware owners (I'm sure you've got their email addy's from old forums) and letting them know to come here, as well as instructions on what to do.  Do I fully uninstall TA and forget about it and begin going with Avast! Mobile Security?  Is the website that those of us in the beta were using going to be updated?  Is Avast's version of that website part of this beta?

Sorry for so many questions, I'm just not seeing much information with regards to everything going on.

Thank you,
Ron

So TA buyers get screwed, it's free now and later you'll probably create a new premium version that we have to buy again.  And before you say you have no plans for a premium remember "no plans" does not mean "will not".  I want TA without the avast crap on my phone so how do I install/update TA without having to involve avast mobile security?  Was concerned avast would destroy a great product, starting to look that way.  Wasted my money of this software  >:(

Just install first the mobile security from avast. There download theft aware, its still a stand alone editon. After that, you can uninstall the mobile security and use theft aware as stand alone.

I must say that the gui from ta is now much better :) Lets see whats going on :D

Hi Matan,

Hi, it looks great but I was wondering about 2 issues.
First, where can I find the list of the commands for remote sms?

The list of commands is inside the Anti-Theft part of the application.

Second, how do I disable the notification icon?

You will be able to turn off the notification icon in the next beta refresh.

I'm using Avast Internet Security on my PC and I would Love Avast on my Galaxy S2 but I would like the option to run the scanner on demand.
You see... I'm not always connected so I don't really need real time scanner enabled ALL the time, just when I'm online.
Will you add the option to disable the shields as user request on next builds?
Right now I'm using Dr. Web lite just because it can be disabled and run only when I need it.

I guess you didn't read the post. I'm NOT concerned about battery life, I just Don't want an AV/Firewall running all the time when it is not needed. Simple.
If my phone is off-line most of the time there is no need for that particular type of program to be running in the background too.
I like to use my phone so I charge it every night to make sure I have battery during the day, I also plug it to my USB at work some times If I need extra juice so again, NO, Battery life is not a concern.

What is the concern then? You are afraid of a possible slow down of your device if avast! keeps running in the background?

I see no battery use by avast when it's idle which is most of the time.

@Vlk,
I just saw the notice over at Wilders.

Firewall on android is not like firewall on Windows. In fact a lot of things is just what a framework allows to the developer. And in case of andorid, it's just enable, block, wifi only, 3G only and roaming control. You can't control ports or protocols as its not necessary really.
Besides, why would you even bother with ports on a phone?
Simple. Security like I learn over at Wilders. I don't know Android, but learning, and indeed, other than loopback and a heap of google connections, there are no open ports like in Windows. I have a tablet. It's not a phone. Unless some tethering is done to a phone.
I now understand how the firewall works here, got a reply here
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=90144.0
it's a connection control for applications.

Please, post a download link of the avast apk. I can't download from the market, an error appears.

Also, my Galaxy Y s5360 is rooted, but DroidWall which uses iptables returns an error that kernel should support netfilter owner match module. Does avast firewall require iptables and/or any special built options in the kernel? Main phone has Android 2.3.6, kernel 2.6.35.7, iptables 1.3.7, rooted – Superuser 3.0, su 3.0.3.

Thanks,

Title: Firewall doesn't work on Samsung Galaxy Y GT-S5360
Post by: fiery on December 14, 2011, 09:32:01 PM
To answer my own question. Avast Firewall doesn't work with Samsung Galaxy Y GT-S5360. The following error appears, when I try to enable the Firewall: "Your operating system kernel does not support netfilter, so the avast! firewall will not work. To solve this, flash a custom ROM with full netfilter support."

So DroidWall and now Avast! Firewall don't work with Samsung Galaxy Y GT-S5360. Don't bother to root and install these firewalls on that phone. As long as I know there is no custom ROM available for it, yet.

I wish there was an online dashboard so to speak where one could control all the tracking and anti-theft features.  AVG's mobile app has this and i think it would be much more convenient than the SMS commands.

Love the app by the way! Definitely sticking with it and uninstalling AVG  :)

I would suggest to add uninstall protection for avast mobile security. Password should be the best option.

Do you have this in plan?

Additionally I would like to see a Network traffic monitor integrated as other security vendors have.

We are giving away everything we've got for free.
There will be no premium (paid) version for the time being.

So if you paid for TA and later on you charge for AT what's about paid up TA licences?  And yes I understand "there are no plans right now" as previously quoted else where, but that is standard legal speak for "but we may in the future".  You bought the company, you have my licence fee, what can I expect in the future?

I don't see your logic in Avast having your money.

I don't see your logic in Avast having your money.

I pay "Company A" for product, "Company B" buys "Company A".  "Company B" now owns "Company A"'s  assets and accounts.  The standard process of buying a company.

Well your license fee, may well already have gone into development/overheads of the theft aware product, not the new avast mobile security suite.

So a company taking over another company would generally honour your existing license (depending on the terms of the takeover), which presumably is the case you could keep your existing product and license.

However, if you choose to go for the free product with more features you effectively giving up your existing license and remaining period.

Well your license fee, may well already have gone into development/overheads of the theft aware product, not the new avast mobile security suite.
If my licence fee went on electricity to power a programmers computer so he could develop TA, then Avast are enriched by the code and features he created during that time.  The point is Avast gained 'assets' which were financed by licence purchases.

However, if you choose to go for the free product with more features you effectively giving up your existing license and remaining period.
It's not a free product it's 'currently' free.  It's a beta so that may be why it's free, but as previously stated "There will be no premium (paid) version for the time being.".  Does that say it's free for ever, no it says it's free now.  If Avast release a statement that it's free forever then fine I have not concerns over the licencing. I bought a licence to TA which was allowing me all features and upgrades, it Avast decide at the end of the beta to charge then am I going to have to buy the product again?

@ darre(20x n)
Avast! has a long history of offering free products, such as the free version of avast! antivirus, which I have been using for over seven and a half years and it existed before that.

Now that could obviously change (no one is going to give a forever guarantee), but the current policy is that there will be a free version. So I rather doubt there will be no free version of avast mobile security, but there could be a different feature set in the free mobile security product and 'if' there were a premium product.

If you don't like that idea I guess you could keep using Threat Aware until your license expires.

The in-product updater is for the definitions only. The app itself is updated through the Market.

(I agree that we could have been a bit more explicit about this though, the way it is now is slightly confusing).
