Title: Where do programs reside that I didn't want to run?
Post by: Tinsby on December 06, 2011, 06:08:15 PM
Where do processes go when I select DENY or DO NOT RUN? I can't find anything under SETTINGS | EXCLUSIONS. There must be a list of things somewhere in Avast but where is it? IE: I get a pop-up window asking me if I want XXX to run and I chose NO. Where does that decision end up so I could re-enable it? Seems like Avast is stopping features in Photoshop from working. If I disable Avast PS works as it should.

My auto sandbox is OFF, fwiw.

Help!

Thanks to all in advance,

J T

If you deny a program to run, it's blocked, the file stays there and avast will keep it blocked until next reboot.

Hello,

While I appreciate what you are telling me it makes no logical sense. If I encounter 10 programs that want to run and I deny that privilege, according to you the next time I reboot I will be asked again about the same 10 programs and I'd have to deny all of them yet again.

I am given choices as to whether to allow a program or deny it. If I choose deny Avast never asks me again about that program or applet. Somewhere Avast is keeping a record of those denied programs and I'd like to know how to access that list, rather than UN-installing Avast and starting all over.

Search the specific file that was blocked, right click -> properties -> unblock.

Try it and let us know what happens.

If it doesn't work, please provide more info (OS, SP, x32/64, avast edition and version and so on).

Hello!

That sounds like a plan, but the unfortunate part is since I don't know where the file(s) reside that are blocked I can't search for them.

I wanted to see the list so I could choose to unblock them, that's why I posed the original question.

The OS is XP Pro SP3 with all updates. The Avast is the latest free version ( may be 111208-0) that's what shows when I hit UPDATE.

Thank you again for trying to help me. I'm surprised no one has ever asked the question before.

Regards,

What version of the Avast program you are using? Is it 6.0.1367? (Avast tray icon -> "About Avast")

About the unblock, I thought you were trying to unblock photoshop, so look in the respective folder where the executable is located.

I never blocked Photoshop per se, but I think it's a bit odd that features in the program don't work until I shut off Avast.

That's why I keep asking where to look in Avast for anything that might have been accidentally blocked by me clicking on the Avast pop-up window that says something like " Allow | Don't Allow | Add to "list name." ( Not a direct quote of the syntax used by Avast)

My point is simple, if you block anything from starting or running in Avast, Avast must keep a list of those blocked items somewhere in the program or the registry.

Where is that list?

Thanks again,

J T

How much RAM does the XP Pro SP3 system have ???

Photoshop needs lots of RAM to run.

Is there such a pop-up in Avast Free? It only reminds me of the Autosandbox pop-ups... In that case the file should remain blocked until the next reboot. Am I wrong on this?

Honestly I have never encountered any other pop-up with the block option in Avast Free - apart from those generated by the Autosandbox of course.

Photoshop needs lots of RAM to run.

The system has 6GB RAM using only about half of it of course due to running XP.

PS has always run fine none of this started before I installed Avast. It has been a constant source of amusement/frustration trying to figure out why it's stopping various programs from executing.Heck ti wouldn't even let me run my mp3 player unless I gave it permission! <sigh>

Now at the first sign of a glitch I shut Avast OFF and try my program again.
