Title: New BETA 4.5.536 - hopefully solving many of the issues...?
Post by: Vlk on November 21, 2004, 11:42:36 AM
Hi all,

first I've got to apologize for not being around during the last couple of days. This was because we were very busy preparing a new build that should eventually solve all the problems discussed on these forums so far.

So here it is - a new (pre-release) build of avast 4.5, with a number of fixes created as an immediate response to the support issues we were seeing (both here on the forum and via conventional support entry points).

How to install the beta (we decided to simplify the installation process as much as possible to enable trying this version out even for people who are not so computer proficient - so please don't hesitate and install it even if you normally don't quite do any beta testing). So, all you have it do is download and run the following program

http://www2.asw.cz/misc/aswbeta.exe

and it will take care of the rest. :)

Here's an (incomplete) list of fixes in this release:
- attempt to solve the "Million timeout messages" issue (Internet Mail provider)
- attempt to gracefully handle SSL enabled connections (pretending the server is actually not SSL compliant)
- attempt to solve all kinds of "Timeout" problems in the mail scanner
- solved the problem where the Internet Mail provider was not starting automatically, and also where it was "Waiting for a subsystem to start" e.g. when the on-access task was restarted (or edited)
- solved compatibility of the transparent mail scanner with Norton Personal Firewall and Kerio Winroute Firewall (please report other incompatible firewall products asap!)
- attempt to solve intermittent crashes in aswTdi.sys
- during the displaying of the "Network Shield blocked attack" message, the user now has a possibility to easily choose "Don't show this window next time" (this one has actually been a support nightmare :)).

Please, let us know if it does solve your problems (and especially if it doesn't) - we'd like to release the official version asap.

Thank you.
Vlk

Thanks,

Have had no issues whatsoever with any versions of your program but would love to try this one out too.

hello

Just downloaded the beta and done some little test. No problem but no problem before. Just little unreadable header in the scan result window see the picture. (but is was already in the previous version)

Done some eicar test  from virus.org and avast still almost failed for test 14 and 27 as it already does (however not very serious problems)

Hope this help

PS : Test on windows XP pro sp2 french all updates

Here's an (incomplete) list of fixes in this release

I hope it solves my smtp authentication problem. I can receive but I cannot send mail.
I'll keep posting the beta report.

Technical, do you have a separate forum thread about the problem? I'd need more info (I'd eventually like to try to replicate the problem with your SMTP server settings - so maybe I'd need your authorization info...)

Are you referring to accessing a POP server that needs SSL?  If so, I put back in the Popredirect for Gmails SSL port 995, and did a check, the Mail Scanner icon shows up in the tray, but it times out.  So still no SSL access if that is what you were trying to fix.

Thanks

And how about setting internet connection timeout to a higher value ? Set it at least to 300 in avast! and also make some changes under your account settings in your mail client. Here is one thread explaining where you can change those settings in avast! and Outlook Express:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=8951;start=15 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=8951;start=15)

Post by: Vlk on November 21, 2004, 09:49:52 PM
This won't help (that's for sure). SSL is simply not supported, even in the beta. The change in 529 means that when using SMTP with SSL enabled (on port 25), the mail scanner should be able to force the client to downgrade the communication to non-SSL if necessary (instead of giving the timeout message boxes).

Cheers

This is unfortunately wrong, I found a bug, which was sold earlier I think. Adding a entry in Standard Provider/Exclusion list did not work, the entry will be destroyed.

Not size of that particular entry, but size in general for the exceptions filed. How many entries do you have already inside ?

Hi housi... it's a morning in here, hehe  ;D

I think you may wanna ask Vlk through IM or maybe just point his attention to this thread again. He is very busy guy, and considering that here are so many threads with some current issues with latest program build, it's very likely that he overlooked it. I can not give you satisfying answer, because I really don't have a clue what's the exclusion list entries limit...

Hope you'll get your answer very soon ! Don't give up !  ;)

housi, no problem is not important. Every single issue we would like to find out about. It will help us as well as future avast! users. Best of all, Alwil is working on every single reported issue. True, there is lot of requests, and only few of programmers... but, I'm sure you'll see the solution for your problem soon.

Avast said there was a program update available, so I downloaded it this morning (4.5 bulid 4.5.523). When I tried to check my email, I got timeout messages from Avast. I saw this thread and downloaded the beta version you recommended. I'm still getting the same timeout messages.

I'm using Oulook, with XP SP2.

Use SEARCH feature in these forums and you'll find tens of different threads that covers your issue. One of them is explaining how to set internet connection timeout in avast! as well as in Outlook Express. I'm sure in MS Outlook there must be similar option... Search these forums using word "Timeout"

I use the Turnpike mail client to access 5 mailboxes on 5 different ISPs thus I had to manually set it up.  should I uninstall and do a clean install of 4.5.529 from scratch?

The taskbar would half-appear but its not a full lockup. I had to boot into safe mode and turn off the avast services. I just downloaded the beta and it does not help. I got this from the event viewer:

After a few days of things working right, this morning it was back to "internet mail waiting for a sub system to start// 7 providers, 5 running"
reboot, then cold start did not solve it

so I downloaded the patch/fix (?) and it's working fine now.

The subsystem is your email client. As soon as you start Outlook (Express) you will see 6 out of 7 providers running.

If you open the on-access control panel you will see Outlook/Exchange and the Internet mail provider waiting. And they are just waiting for you to open the email client.

Nothing wrong if the mail scanning is setup correctly, so don't worry.

Eddy...I think you are replying to me?
No, when I opened OE, it still showed 5 of 7 providers running with internet mail waiting for a subsystem to start. And my email did not have all the "clean scanned message" info at the bottom of them.
I downloaded the fix and it is now working properly. I was surprised that it started doing it again after working all right for several days.

housi, there's a size limit for the total size of the expception list and if think it's about 255 bytes... Unfortunately, to extend it is not so simple because it's a limitation of the ODBC storage (I'm not saying it wouldn't be possible, it's just not as trivial as changing this 255 constant somewhere).

Try switching to the XML storage, it may actually help (see e.g. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=8795;start=msg72526#msg72526 for instructions on how to do this). Please note that changing the storage type will probably reset all your customized settings. :-\

I'm sorry, of course you're right. The version number of aavmker4.sys probably hasn't changed (our fault) so please instead of checking the version of this file, check its size.

It should be approximately 14,784 bytes (as opossed to about about 13,248 which it was in avast 4.1).

Thanks

Approximately 14,784 bytes means the size actually has a fractional part? A couple of bits more - something like 0.375 byte? ;D  Sorry, couldn't resist ;)

Try switching to the XML storage, it may actually help (see e.g. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=8795;start=msg72526#msg72526 for instructions on how to do this). Please note that changing the storage type will probably reset all your customized settings.
I did change ODBC to XML as you mentioned. Result is the same. But now as I know the maximum length of 255 Bytes, I've inserted more stars (*) in the entries, i.e. Prog*\Agn*\Outpost Fire*\op_data.mdb in place of Programme\Agnitum\Outpost Firewall\op_data.mdb. Is there a way to control, if these entries are working as desired?

Why don't you workaround this with:
*\op_data.mdb
or just
*op_data.mdb ?

I'm sorry, of course you're right. The version number of aavmker4.sys probably hasn't changed (our fault) so please instead of checking the version of this file, check its size.

It should be approximately 14,784 bytes (as opossed to about about 13,248 which it was in avast 4.1).

Thanks

Ok ive checked:

aavmker4.sys = 14,784 bytes , 4.1.357.0
aavm4h.dll = 163,840 bytes , 4.1.415.0

There's now build 4.5.536 available on our beta server. It's probably the last of the betas before the next official release.

Besides some fixes (mostly mail-related) the biggest news is that it now fully supports 64-bit version of Windows XP.

I installed the latest beta (4.5.536).  It generally works fine, but it didn't solve the problem of failing to accommodate multiple SMTP servers.  (See separate thread: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=8867 )

Avast will scan and allow sending of messages for accounts using the default SMTP server, but not for those set up to send via an alternate SMTP server.  (Scanning of incoming messages in different accounts via multiple POP3 servers works fine, BTW.)

It's not a big problem, since accounts can be modified to send via the default SMTP server.  Just wanted to provide an update.

OS:  WinMe
Firewall:  ZA
Email program:  OE 6.0
Email accounts:  Server authentication (no SSL)

UpLateVA, did you set correctly the authentication options for stmp server into the email accounts settings?

Yes, the "server authentication required" option has always been set for my various email accounts, and it's still set that way.  That includes the accounts which use the default SMTP server, and those which use alternate SMTP servers.  But Avast allows outgoing mail only thru the default server, not thru the alternates.

As noted previously, I can work around the problem by changing all accounts to use the default SMTP server.  But the underlying problem is still there, and I'm unable to send mail thru alternate servers, and still have outgoing messages scanned.

Besides this, can you open a DOS window and run:

telnet your_smtp_server 25

Yes, I tried the telnet test which you suggested, and the alternate SMTP servers respond properly.  That's not surprising, since I was able to utilize multiple SMTP servers prior to installing AVast, and I can still use them all if I configure the email accounts to bypass Avast.

But when the accounts are configured to go thru Avast, it allows outgoing messages *ONLY* thru those which utilize the default SMTP server, and not thru those which use alternate servers.

If I'm understanding you correctly, the default smtp server is the one you connects the Internet. The default server into avast4.ini file is just used to send mail for analysis (for instance), it is not 'read' when specific smtp configuration is set into the email accounts.

I'm unable to send mail thru alternate servers, and still have outgoing messages scanned.

No tronje, that was just iAvs update... virus database update. You get audio alarm only when iAvs update is performed, not program update.

We were talking speciafically about program update. Most likely you'll get program update on Monday. It suppose to be out yesterday, but I've got message from "the first hand", one of Alwil guys, and he told me that release of latest avast! program build is delayed for Monday... Monday is close, so I guess no big deal to wait just a little bit longer...

That includes the accounts which use the default SMTP server, and those which use alternate SMTP servers.  But Avast allows outgoing mail only thru the default server, not thru the alternates.

If I'm understanding you correctly, the default smtp server is the one you connects the Internet. The default server into avast4.ini file is just used to send mail for analysis (for instance), it is not 'read' when specific smtp configuration is set into the email accounts.

The "default SMTP server" is used for outgoing mail from all accounts, unless another SMTP server is specified for a particular account.  It was set thru the Mail Wizard, and the information is retained in the [Mail Settings] section of the avast4.ini file.

As noted in my prior post, when I attempt to specify a different (non-default) SMTP server in any account, Avast will not allow messages to be sent from that account.  Avast is working properly for outgoing mail *ONLY* when mail is sent via the default SMTP server

I have reconfigured all of my accounts to remove references to specific SMTP servers, so all messages are now sent via the default SMTP server.  That's an acceptable work-around for the time being, but it doesn't allow multiple SMTP servers to be used.

The "default SMTP server" for general use is separate from the "SMTP server" used for sending suspect files to Alwil for analysis.  The latter server is set via the context menu for the tray icon (Program Settings > SMTP), and the information is retained in the [Communication] section of the avast4.ini file.  I have not set any SMTP server in that section.

I'm unable to send mail thru alternate servers, and still have outgoing messages scanned.

Are you using the last 4.5.536 version?

Yes, I'm using 4.5.536.  That was the subject of my posting.  I reported that I had upgraded to the current version, but that upgrade had not resolved the pre-existing problem of failure to recognize multiple SMTP servers.  (The problem doesn't seem any worse than it had been prior to the upgrade.)
Title: Outlook Express problems
Post by: El Tel on November 28, 2004, 06:24:00 AM
Hi. I've switched here from the forum that was closed down (or at least, there were no further postings.
I am using the latest version of the program.

I still can't get Outlook Express to send mail. At first it was only mail with attachments, now it's any mail at all. Outlook (not Express) works fine. Outlook Express shows the transmission bar graphic as the email starts sending, but it stops short, and stays there until I get notification of a problem from the server.

Things I've noticed:
In OUTLOOK EXPRESS, my Server Settings have changed. They always were:
Incoming mail: pop.cantv.net
Outbound mail: mail.cantv.net
Account name: username
Now they are:
Incoming mail: 127.0.0.1
Outbound mail: 127.0.0.1
Account name: username#pop.cantv.net
I didn't change them - so I guess it must have been Avast.

However, the settings in OUTLOOK have NOT been changed, and it works fine.
BTW, I have increased all the timeouts as suggested on the other forum, and have tried enabling/disabling outbound scanning. Nothing helps.

Despite all this, I'm a newly converted Avast! fan - and told C-Net so.
I hope this feedback contributes to development. Congratulations on a really useful forum.

Best wishes from Venezuela.

Before you start with this, make sure you completely closed your Outlook Express (not just minimized, you have to shut it down)...

Go to START / Programs / avast! antivirus and choose your MAIL PROTECTION WIZARD.

When it opens, mark (choose) AUTOMATICALLY REMOVE PROTECTION FROM ALL MY ACCOUNTS. Confirm all following requests, and when MAIL PROTECTION WIZARD closes itself, open your Outlook Express. This will remove avast! protection from your Outlook Express, and set original smtp and po3 server names as well as your original logging (user) name...

See if you can send/receive  e-mails without avast! mail protection running (no matter if you tried it before, just do it again).

Now, close your Outlook Express again (completely, like last time). Open your avast! MAIL PROTECTION WIZARD one more time, except now you have to choose AUTOMATICALLY PROTECT ALL MY ACCOUNTS, click on NEXT and confirm all requests you get from mail protection wizard.

When you exit the wizard, open your Outlook Express and try to send/receive with and/or without attachments. Note that this procedure will set your smtp and po3 server names to 127.0.0.1 and slightly change your logging name. Of course that's normal behaviour, because avast! must be "sitting" in between your mail client and mail server, otherwise your e-mails wouldn't be protected...

Post back what's happening...

Cheers !

Hi again.

Followed instructions with the following results:
REMOVE PROTECTION
Incoming mail reset successfully.
Outbound mail reset to: mail.cantv.net#mail.cantv.net.
Username reset successfully.
Outbound mail without attachment refused.
Outbound mail with attachment refused.

I reset the outbound mail server manually (eliminating the extra #mail.cantv.net) and it sent mail with and without attachment perfectly.

PROTECT ALL MY ACCOUNTS
Checked the mail settings in Outlook Express. They were changed.
Result:
Outbound mail without attachment sent (slowly)
Outbound mail with attachment had a problem as before.

If you tell me how to paste a screenshot into this forum, I'll send you a shot of the error message.

That's really strange behaviour in Outlook Express. I'm running Windows XP Professional and my father is on Windows 98 SE just as you. None of us is having problems with sending/receiving. I also used Sygate, and I'm on ADSL (24/7).

You can post your attachment here in forums, but you shouldn't press PREVIEW button prior to sending, because your attachment will be lost. As soon as you finish typing your post, attach your picture (shouldn't exceed 200 kb, btw) and clik on POST right away. Previewing messages will just erase attachment and it will post your message without it...

You can find ATTACH field as well as BROWSE button at the bottom of the screen where you write your message...

Cheers !

Hmmm... I don't understand much of it, but I'm affraid I know what's your problem. I saw it mentioned SSL. Read here what Vlk said about SSL connections and avast!:

Quote
This won't help (that's for sure). SSL is simply not supported, even in the beta. The change in avast build 529 means that when using SMTP with SSL enabled (on port 25), the mail scanner should be able to force the client to downgrade the communication to non-SSL if necessary (instead of giving the timeout message boxes).

Does your mail provider supports non-SSL connections ? If it does, you will have to disable SSL...

Title: Re:New BETA 4.5.536 - hopefully solving many of the issues...?
Post by: S.Z.Craftec on November 28, 2004, 08:34:13 AM
No it will not give you a security problem, but I'm not sure can you do that or not from Outlook Express. My mail providers doesn't use SSL, so I'm not quite familiar with it.

As I can see, you're not using latest program build. You're still on 523.

If you take a closer look at what Vlk posted (I posted a quote of what he said) you'll see that those problems are solved even with build 529. You don't have it and that's why you're still having those difficulties sending/receiving mails.

Listen to my advice now and it should help you right away...

Take a good look at this post:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=9007 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=9007)

Vlk explained how to download and upgrade your avast! with latest build. Don't pay attention 'cause it's a BETA build. That doesn't mean anything... it's stable as it was never before. That is last beta update before releasing final version in a couple of days. I'm sure it will solve your problems with Outlook Express. Just download that little file Vlk gave link for in his post and start it from your local Hard Drive. When it finishes with downloading lates program update, it will ask you to restart your system. Do that, and when you come back into Windows, you should be able to send/receive without problems...

Please post back your results. I may not be online, but for sure, I'll check very soon what you posted...

Cheers !

Hi from Venezuela.
Downloaded the file, and I'm running build 536 now. You know I was sure I already downloaded 536 last night, in fact I have the downloaded file from last night in "My Download Files" to prove it!
Anyway, I'm up-to-date now, unfortunately it hasn't solved the problem. I'm going to try disabling SSL to see what happens. I'll let you know.
Regards.

Good (very early) morning from Venezuela.

Disabled SSL in IE, but it made no difference. I still have the problem.
I can work around it for now by using Outlook, instead of Outlook Express, but I would like to keep working on the problem.

I have seen other postings from people with the same difficulty, so it's worth continuing the investigation.

Regards.

Do you run any other spy-/adware blockers or something like that?

Can you check the proxy settings?
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy

Try the 'non-automatic' settings, i.e., no proxies at all.

btw the outlook express timeouts happen to me too but not as a whole lot at once

Can you try the build 4.5.536? It solves the timout problems.

Good morning...

After a few days of things working right, again I am back to "internet mail/waiting for subsystem to start." This shows with OE running...
I am not having any time out issues.
XP SP2, ZA free, SpyBot, AD SE, Spyblaster, Prevx
Avast build 4.5.536

It is now working after I shut down, unplugged the system, then booted.
As far as I know, I have allowed anything/everything  concerning Avast in my programs.

Any advice? Thank you...

Any advice? Thank you...

As usual, can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).

It's really strange...
How is configurated the ashMaiSv.exe service to start? (Automatically or Manually)? You can go to
Start Menu > Administrative Tools > Services
Pick up the two avast services and choose Properties to see.

Technical, it's set for automatic ???
Should I go ahead and try the repair function?

and pages are also loading more slowly...

It should be manual, I mean, ashMaiSv.exe must be Manual.
The other avast services should be Automatic.

You can always repair avast as it won't harm your system...

Of course it's worth of investigation. You saw everything we tried to do yesterday (and it was almost 3:00 AM here in this part of Canada, I was awake just because of you)... at no avail... nothing helped. Please , don't give up. My advice is to ask Vlk or pk or someone from Alwil team. Point their attention to the post (reply) where we started to discuss about your SSL issue. I'm sure they will give you some answer Mister Frio... here is the actual link:

Sorry, I tried everything that I could think of at that point... I really hope you'll solve that issue.

Cheers !

Thanks for your help. Sorry I kept you up late. I will take your advice later in the week and post the problem onto a new forum. I noticed several posts that say that the new build solves the problem - Not for everyone it seems! We have a rogue bug.
Anyway thanks again for your interest.
Best wishes.

No need to appologize my friend... that was my decision to stay up late. I wanna help if I can, just like everyone else in these forums. Our duty is to help if we can somehow...

I'm sure we'll find some solution soon.

Joe, I wasn't there when they helped you, but I'd like to add that this is normal behaviour when we speak about Alwil team and avast! technical support members... I'm really glad you solved your problem, the only thing we have to do now, is to solve Mister Frio's problem...

I faced " connection terminating whenever i tried to connect to avast update"

I tried repairing avast ( no help) , i download the avast update from http://www2.asw.cz/misc/aswbeta.exe ( got the terminating problem)

I then checked the proxy " Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy "  result: the program hang, and i clicked "end programs" , then avast program closed, the avast icon is then closed ".

is there any way i can update avast other than connecting to avast server? Thanks for the time.

Remove ZA completely and than try to update. Let's see if that is working.

It wouldn't be the first time that ZA is causing this.
If this is working, install ZA again and try a update. Although there is none if it worked, you still will be able to see if it connects or not.

I then checked the proxy " Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy "  result: the program hang, and i clicked "end programs" , then avast program closed, the avast icon is then closed ".

If I understand correctly, you can't change your proxy settings while updating process is running.
Can you try again and check the proxy settings?
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy

Try the 'non-automatic' settings, i.e., no proxies at all.

Can you say that it was wrong proxy settings which was avoiding the update?
What did you do to solve the problem?

I also solved my problem after changing the proxy. my IE works perfectly so i set it to auto detect (from IE) at first but then with the help of a very nice person managed to switch to no proxy (which i think is the one my internet uses)

does that mean that avast has problems auto detecting?

Problem solved,  thank you all for your help..

I had tried to upgrade while avast was active and ran into the timeout problem.  All it took to finally upgrade to .536 was to deactivate avast, download the beta and follow instruction to upgrade.

I do not seem to have any problems now

[snip]

I'm unable to send mail thru alternate servers, and still have outgoing messages scanned.

Are you using the last 4.5.536 version?

Yes, I'm using 4.5.536.  That was the subject of my posting.  I reported that I had upgraded to the current version, but that upgrade had not resolved the pre-existing problem of failure to recognize multiple SMTP servers.  (The problem doesn't seem any worse than it had been prior to the upgrade.)

Update:  After installing the two most recent upgrades (4.5.542 and 4.5.546), the problem which I had experienced (i.e., failure to recognize multiple SMTP servers) seems to be resolved.  Avast will now scan outgoing mail sent via different SMTP servers specified in various accounts in my mail client.  Previously, my Avast installation would allow sending only thru the default SMTP server.

OS:  WinMe
Mail client:  MSOE 6.0
Mail accounts:  Server authentication, non-SSL
Firewall:  ZA

;D As a relatively new Avast user, I'm very pleased with the program.  The continuing upgrades are much appreciated.  The forums are very helpful, too.  A welcome change from my last AV program!
