Title: How do I repair registry problems?
Post by: zephyrs on November 21, 2004, 01:47:20 PM
Hi!   What do you recommend as a quick, easy way to correct registry problems?   What free (free without eventual requirement to buy)  program do you recommend downloading for this?
            Thanks.

If you have aa backup of a good registry revert back to that.

If not, you can try a registry cleaner (think Bob has one in his links), but normally they clean and do not repair.

If this doesn't solve the problem, do a repair of the OS.

Hi, Eddy!
I have a backup of my registry, that I did when I reinstalled my scanner, about a month ago.     I could try to revert back to that backup.    I am not sure how to revert back to a previous registry, though.
          Thanks.

Emergency Recovery Utility NT 1.1a (http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt/erunt.zip) is a very good freeware.
More on 'Links' in my signature  ;)

Hi!   It turns out the download you recommended, is not for my windows system.    I have windows millenium.    I looked at the other things you have to offer, but am not sure what to look for.   If I go by the category of virus removal, that wouldn't fit as I have no viruses.   Unless you think  the virus removers would also correct registry problems.
I believe my registry problem is very likely caused by a problem with the download of my scanner I made recently.     I've had trouble with that scanner, multiple times in the past, and I recently learned it was supposed to be able to be fixed by downloading some new drivers they made to correct the problems.  But I'm afraid it didn't fix it, as I recently saw sign that the problems still exist.     I unplugged my scanner, and now I no longer have some unexplained entries listed when running my antiviruses.    So that is one sign that the scanner could be to blame.    I will call them tomorrow, to see if they can find a solution to the problem.     But I hope they know how to explain how to remove any errors from my registry that are probably  related to the problem.     If they can't explain how to remove errors from the registry on this, then I will resort to uninstalling the scanner.    This might solve the problem.   Of course, i   wish I could still use the scanner.     BUt the priiority is to keep my computer working properly.
          Thank you for your helpfulness.

I have windows millenium.

As far I know it works with Me too  ::) 8)

Unless you think the virus removers would also correct registry problems.

I don't think so...
Hardware and drivers problems won't be corrected by ERUNT or an antivirus.
ERUNT is not a Registry cleaner as well. Only a backup/restore.
It's better to solve the driver (hardware) problem before starting to play with the registry.

Hi,
EruNt of course is only for NT-based systems (Win NT/2000/XP/2k3),

There is a microsoft ERU/ERD utility for DOS-based WIN's , but this is imho only useful for Win9x

But why don't you use
ME's System Recovery, or scanregW /restore ?

See Win Help or Microsoft Knowledgebase/Support

And you might want to tell us about those "unexplained entries" in your AV-Report -> might well be unrelated to Registry problems

Hi! My personal favourite reg. tool is: "jv16 Powertools 1.3.0.195" (last uncrippled Freeware version) OS: Win9x/ME/NT4/2000/XP, which you will find here: http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/index.html#jv16

BE CAREFULL WITH WHAT YOU FIX/DELETE, ALLWAYS BACK-UP FIRST!!!

I know, I just write as far I know in my previous post.
Have you already tried to use and run ERUNT into Me?

Nope;
 I jumped from Win95B (where I used MS' ERU/ERD) right to Win2k

But ERUNT states quite clearly in the prog's docu that it's only for SAVING NT-Registries whch are quite a bit different from 9x/ME

RESTORE can of course be done under DOS-based systems too; if they have write-access to the <NT>system partition

Debbie-
Have you always had trouble with the scanner?
Sometimes the older drivers work best with a older system.
Here is a link to RegCleaner that I found-will work on ME
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html
And another cleaner RegSeeker(be careful with this one)
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
I use them both all the time-just make a backup before using ANY cleaner.

Debby, I use Windows Registry Repair Pro. You can get a trial version for free which repairs 15 errors at a time. Or you can purchase the full version.
