Why go to all that trouble when you "don't" have all the details? ???
Wouldn't it be better to find the cause and fix that? Then go from there? ???

megapancake..
It seems the Windows Modules Installer is been corrupted. That is the reason why you are unable to install both VC++ and Windows Updates.
So we need to fix the Windows Modules Installer services.
1) We need to download TrustedInstaller.reg and TrustedInstaller.exe from
http://www.vistax64.com/attachments/tutorials/16945d1257340284-windows-update-error-80070424-trustedinstallerx86.zip
Sometimes you will need Psexec.exe file contained in PsTools if you have any trouble with importing fix to registry.
You can download Psexec.exe from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897553
2) Take ownership of C:Windows\Servicing folder
3) Add your account to full control
4) Place TrustedInstaller.exe in C:WindowsServicing folder
5) Import fix to registry attached (just double click on TrustedInstaller.reg file)
Note: if it return error 'Acess denied' the best way to workaround it, import this fix from SYSTEM account
6) Download PsTools (from the link which we provided in step 1)
7) Extract psexec.exe file from it
8 ) Place it in C:Windows\System32 folder
9) Click Start then click Run
10) Type cmd.exe then press enter
11) Right click on cmd.exe run as administartor
12) Type the following then press enter:
psexec -s -i -d regedit
13) Click File then click Import
14) Go to stored file TrustedInstaller.reg
15) Choose the file then click apply
16) Restart your computer
Note: If everything work fine now restore original permissions to C:WindowsServicing folder
17) Remove your account from permissions to Servicing folder
18) Restore ownership of Servicing folder back to 'NT ServiceTrusted Installer'
Try to install VC++ and update us back.
-
2) Take ownership of C:Windows\Servicing folder
3) Add your account to full control
If you dont know how to take the ownership of C:Windows\Servicing folder, please let us know.
-
Yeah, I dont know how.
-
Okay for taking the ownership of a particular folder..
1) Locate folder. Right-click folder, select 'Properties'.
2) Click 'Security' tab.
3)From 'Permissions', click 'Advanced'.
4)Click 'Owner' and Click 'Edit'.
5) In 'Change owner to', select user account that you need to assign the ownership. Click 'Apply'. Click 'OK'. Click 'OK'. Click 'OK'.
Once you chaged the ownership to your user account, in the 'Security' tab you need to provide Full Control to the folder and Click on OK.
Hope you got the point. If you still have doubts, post back..

Would you like to start over and get your issue resolved...properly? ???
Before iyogi really screws it up. ???
-
you couldnt screw it up anymore. this pc is just dieing
-
You can get the reg file from the below link

@Para-Noid :- If you do not have any resolution to fix the problem then don't criticize or misguide groups who are trying to assist others.
@megapancake :- The solutions suggested by iYogisolutions1 should be effective & if the last suggestion recommended is not working then you should be reinstalling the windows.
Cheers..

Let's get some info before jumping to conclusions. What is your OS? What security software do you have
or "ever" had? If uninstalled, how was it uninstalled? Security software includes anti-virus, anti-malware,
anti-spyware and firewalls. Are you using Windows firewall and/or Windows Defender? As far as the distributable package that iyogi is wanting is if I'm not mistaken is included with the avast file.
Also use a good cleaner like CCleaner to clean your HDD and registry. The link is below. :)

Take a look at http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=90627.msg720791#msg720791
Pondus, who has a lot more experience than most people, was doing just that before iyogi jumped in. ;D
If you follow the forums you will find that iyogi usually leaps before looking. iyogi has this never ending desire to "not" making things better. Only worse. I am "not" criticizing anyone. iyogi is doing enough misguiding for all of us. :)

@ the OP
I sent a message to essexboy. He will probably give you the more help than me.
But, do provide the info I requested. It might be tomorrow as it's late in the UK.
Please have patience. We will figure it out. :)
-
i appreciate that. thanks

I'm going to log off. But please supply the requested info. :)

@megapancake,
I'm not going to get into who knows what or if other suggestions were correct or not.
What I can do is read your topic. You have mentioned other antiviruses being installed, whether currently or before. If I'm not mistaken, you mentioned having used AVG in the past and also MSE.
If you haven't yet, you should uninstall both before installing avast. After the uninstall, and sill before installing avast, you should run the respective removal utilities for each of those (and for any other you ever had) so to remove any potential conflicts.
A partial list of specific removal utilities for security tools is located at http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/ (http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/). Review the list, read the appropriate info, download the respective removal utilities and follow the appropriate instructions. After each removal, please reboot before running additional utilities.
All this may or may not solve your original problem completely. Your system may have additional issues. But in any case, it is very recommended to remove any remnants of security tools before installing new ones.
Please report back when you are done (or if you have additional questions).

I have come across this side by side thing before - somewhere in the forums ... But I can't find it at the moment.. I will continue searching
It is a software problem, as far as I can remember and was related to win2k

Ta ;D
-
If you read my posts you would realise that because avast wont install i had to install mse cause i want to have an av. i did fully ininstall avg but ill try it again >.>
Also, what is win2k?
-
I'll say it again (and you should re-read the relevant post): uninstall is not enough; uninstall is not the same as the removal utility.
You need to uninstall, reboot, removal utility, reboot.
BTW, Win2k is Windows 2000 (a version of Windows), which needs also SP4 + RU1 for avast to work. If your version of Windows is not Windows 2000, then part of those links are not relevant.
-
I have. as ive said ive ran the utility and im not removing mse till this is fixed. also, im running vista and i cant reinstall it
-
i hate to double post but i cant do anything. i cant play my new games or anything.
-
Have you read the links posted by AdrianH? You need to install the package mentioned there. Generally, avast's installation would also install it for you if it is missing in your system. For some reason, it didn't happen.
About MSE and AVG (or whatever other antivirus), you shouldn't use 2 resident antivirus tools simultaneously, as they conflict between each other. That's why, to solve conflicts, you need to uninstall the others, and remove their remnants.
About Vista, do you have SP1 and SP2 installed? Check it at Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> System. Also check there that you have Windows already validated / activated. Any other Windows Updates available for your system? Check for them and apply them (and then reboot and re-check for more).
About new games, first you should have your antivirus installed and working. That's the main topic here. If you have avast installed and working, then we can move on to solve some connection problem, or firewall rules, or whatever else. Or maybe we have some misunderstanding here?
-
please read my posts. i cant run windows updates and i FULLY REMOVED AVG AND IM NOT UNINSTALLING MSE TILL ITS FIXED. I AM NOT SURFING THE WEB WITH NO AV.
-
Download avast when you're running MSE. Go offline. Uninstall MSE. Install avast offline. Boot. Go online again.
-
if only it was that easy. i ahve tried that and deleting mse fully then installing avast. No results just the same error.
-
If you cannot update windows that would suggest an infection of some sort
Please follow the stpes here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

its not malware, its a clean pc. I cant run any .msi's so i assume is a corrupt one. Also, mbam has found nothing. further proof that its not malware is the c++ install wont work. or saints row the third. awsmbr just gave my pc the BSOD. Thanks alot >:(
-
If it is a clean PC how do you have so many problems ?
The BSOD is not a problem as the system will restart, at what stage did you get the BSOD ?
-
Also, mbam has found nothing
it proves nothing as MBAM is a specialised tool targeting limited types of malware.....and no security program have 100% detection
-
I dont know what stage because i was watching TV but this pc hasnt downloaded anything but its a few years old and it had a harddrive error a while ago corrupting somethings.
-
harddrive error a while ago corrupting somethings.
Have you run a checkdisc to resolve the errors ?
-
yes, it was a few things. It fixed all the problems (or so i thought till i tried to install c++ for avast, avast, saints row 3) and i get an error code while trying to update windows, dunno if it will help though : 80073712

If you have a 32bit Vista then from the following page download and run the MS file http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
All supported x86-based versions of Windows Vista
Then retry windows updates
-
downloading the file. thanks essex.
Still installing. its been installing hotfix for windows for ages
