Title: Do NOT use SSL email settings with Outlook Express if I use Avast anti-virus ???
Post by: glnz on December 29, 2011, 05:14:49 AM
If I use both Avast and Outlook Express, the Avast Mail Shield settings should be set per the new Verizon email suggestions - 995 and 465 and SSL, but the Outlook Express settings should go back to the prior 587 and 110 and NOT SSL ??

Is that correct?

If that is correct, is it because Avast is communicating with the Verizon email server and then passing the emails to and from my Outlook Express?  In other words, my Outlook Express is NOT communicating directly with the Verizon email server?

Please explain, as I had complained in other forums about the lack of SSL between my Outlook Express and the Verizon email server and was happy to get Verizon's new email suggesting the new SSL link.

Thanks.

You have to set the security in outlook to none so that avast can now handle the connection and provide the security for you.

Look the avastUI, Real-Time Shields, Mail Shield, Expert Settings, SSL accounts, is the communication to the correct SSL port for Verizon, etc. Protocol, SMTP; Port, 587 (or appropriate number); Encryption, SSL.

The major thing is if the email connections are accepted then presumably it is secure otherwise Verizon would block the connection ?

CraigB:  Just want to check:  With Avast, is my Outlook Express connected to Verizon's email servers (not encrypted), or ONLY Avast (encrypted)?

Thanks.

Avast handles the secure connection as the sending/receipt of the email is redirected through the avast localhost proxy so that it can be scanned. The whole process is secure.

DavidR and craigb:  That's good news!

How long ago did Avast AV Free change its links to the Verizon email server to Verizon's new SSL links (and new port numbers)?  It was only yesterday that I received the Verizon email advising of their new SSL email capability, but when I looked last night your Avast Mail Shield Expert Settings were already configured!

Also, just to be absolutely safe - if my PC is a laptop using WiFi to link to the internet and I am sitting in a public space and using Outlook Express (still with the old UNencrypted settings) to receive, send and read my emails, please confirm that my laptop's connection to Verizon's email servers is SSL-secure because only Avast (with its SSL-encrypted mail settings) is communicating with Verizon's email servers, not Outlook Express.

Thanks again.

Avast add's the settings automatically, once you disabled the secure connection in outlook avast could then detect the setting's and apply.

Your outlook is still conecting to your email server but it's doing it routed through avast for better protection.

CraigB:  Can a bad guy with a sniffer read my emails, or will he see them as SSL encrypted?

A bad enough person with enough smart's can always find a way around security, you just have to make it harder for them.  Some articals you might like to read here on public WiFi http://forums.cnet.com/7723-7585_102-402617/security-concerns-on-public-wi-fi-access/
Title: NEW ISSUE - Do NOT use SSL email settings with Outlook Express if I use Avast???

Well, it's 9 months since the above, and I have a new issue with this.

For the first time, I have checked my Avast  mail.log, and (although my Outlook Express email is working) I have found these lines (at the bottom of the log):

Quote
9/4/2012   10:35:28 AM   00000F20:   Cannot establish SSL with POP server 206.46.232.10:995, SSL_connect error 10054

9/4/2012   1:57:41 PM   0000094C:   --POP Mail is clean

Also, there are many of these lines:

Quote
8/29/2012   10:17:17 PM   00001684:   Cannot connect to POP server 206.46.232.10 (206.46.232.10:995), connect error 10053
8/29/2012   10:18:17 PM   000017C0:   Cannot connect to POP server 206.46.232.10 (206.46.232.10:995), connect error 10065
8/30/2012   12:03:54 AM   000017DC:   --SMTP Mail is clean
8/30/2012   12:11:12 AM   000011D0:   --POP Mail is clean
8/30/2012   12:41:02 AM   00000F68:   --SMTP Mail is clean
8/30/2012   12:42:04 AM   000014C8:   --POP Mail is clean
8/30/2012   1:07:08 AM   0000159C:   --POP Mail is clean

There are many instances of these earlier in mail.log.

SO - what in fact is the connection between my Outlook Express and the Verizon email server?  Am I connecting to Verizon email UNencrypted or ALWAYS ENcrypted through Avast?

Thanks again.
