System Restore has been known to mess with the avast installation.

- Try a repair of avast:
Win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair. This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual VPS version.

-  If that doesn't work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

Windows 7 when using the system restore, and you pick a restore point it offers you the option to scan for affected software, which will alert you in advance on what software will not work when the restore is completed. As DavidR indicated you can than do a repair.

It has nothing to do with what win7 may say in advance won't work as this appears to be an unforeseen consequence of using system restore, not something that can be seen in advance of using system restore.

I gave up on system restore more years than I care to remember as it was far from perfect and there were many such unexpected consequences. From that point on I have used drive imaging software to replace system restore.

I have never used system restore on win7 as it was one of the first things I disabled and made a backup.

Thanks for the insight on this issue :)  I am going to look into drive imaging software. Appreciate your tip

You're welcome.

As I said though I have never used the win7 system restore, so I can't speak from personal experience.

Whilst by all accounts it is much better than previous versions, there are still instances of unexpected consequences of using it in the forums. So I prefer the tried and tested drive imaging software, which for me has always acted as expected.

It is a problem on avast repair that cannot manage different avast files versions: the restored ones and the new ones (not changed by system restore) that you update since the snapshot you're restoring.

This may be an "aswclear" project.  Best image software is Acronis.  We use it many times everyday.

I'd heard so many bad things about problems with system restore that, like DavidR, I ditched it ages ago.  While it's not a true disk imaging app, my system came pre-installed with Farstone's Restore-IT, which works pretty much the same way and automatically creates a new "restore point" (disk image, saved to a hidden partition on the main drive) at the first boot-up each calendar day.

There's been at least one occasion when I uninstalled something I didn't intend to, and restore is fast enough (<5 min. for roughly 10 gig used on my drive) that it was much faster to simply restore from that morning than to re-download and re-install.  Like most imaging apps and their close cousins, it's unfortunately an all-or-nothing restore, so any updated files lose their changes.  In practice, that uusually means nothing more than avast having to repeat one or more updates, which is no big deal.

I think it's important where in time was avast! installed.

Past - - - - - - avast! Installation - - - - App 1 - - - - App 2 - - - - App 3

For as long as you don't go further back from avast! Installation i think there should be no problems. But once you go past that point, things can go bad where not everything is removed by Restore Point even though technically it should be. I think same applies to program updates that happen in between. If you go further back than when the program update was installed, there will be issues. Nothing proved so far but it appears to be such pattern.

I wish things were that simple... A simple virus definitions update (not program) could mess everything...

Same problem as first post, tried what what was suggested on here but did not work. I got a avast setup fatal error message when I went into progams to try a repair. Any other advice???
