avast! Mobile Security Beta 1.0.1436

Hi everyone,

I'm pleased to announce a new beta of avast! Mobile Security. Finding and fixing the bug with the automatic updates was a hard task, but I sincerely hope we did a fine job. The automatic updates work on our devices, but we would, of course, like them to work on yours as well! That's why we are releasing this beta on our forum before the official update hits the Android Market. We would like to hear from you about the automatic updates and if they are working for you (or not) with this newest build. Hope you enjoy it!

Incomplete changelog:
* Numerous bugfixes including fixes for the automatic updates bug, the AMS password protection bug and the non-working call blocking on LG devices (on 2.1 and 2.2 only, see known issues section).
* Added the ability to change language in application settings.
* Added passworded avast! Anti-Theft removal wizard to Mobile Security settings.
* The firewall can now be toggled between "Deny selected" and "Allow selected" modes.

Known Issues:
* Incoming call blocking still doesn't work on LG devices with OS version 2.3.x and higher. This is because Google made some changes to Android OS in version 2.3.x and LG makes some adjustments to all their operating systems. We couldn't find a way how to block incoming calls on such non-rooted devices. If you have an idea or know about an application that can do this, make sure to write us as we would be happy to provide this functionality to all LG 2.3.x users out there!
* Call blocker seems to crash on some ICS 4.0.1 custom ROMs.
* Application management doesn't load applications on some ICS 4.0.1 custom ROMs.
* Some texts might be underlined with thin red line on some ICS ROMs (if that is your case as well, please, post your device and ROM information).

Download link:
No longer available.

Installation:
You might need to uninstall your previous version first if update doesn't work for you (depends on your ROM and its settings).
You need to have "Unknown sources" allowed in the OS Settings/Applications section, then you can either copy the .apk to your SD card and install it just by clicking on it or you can push the application to your device using "adb install -r path-to-apk" command.

You can spam this thread with comments about this beta, we especially appreciate messages about automatic updates and thoughts about the new features.

Thanks.

"Avast notification icon not loading when webshield is disabled" -bug described here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=90832.msg726017#msg726017 seems to be fixed. Thanks!

Everything is running smoothly so far... :)

Don't know whether this a bug or a feature. My AMS password is a phone number and i can't call to this number, because dialer opens AMS UI when i try to dial.

Edit: seems the problem is with Anti-Theft installed only.

That is a feature. If you hide Anti-Theft from the launcher, there is no other way to access it's UI other than calling the password (in the case AMS is not installed).

Toshiba Thrive tablet, android 3.2, rooted. No phone features, uses Wi-Fi only.
Very early feedback:
About 3 hours ago I downloaded using the native browser on the Thrive. File went into /Downloads, I clicked on the .apk to install, it asked few questions, agree, then it said about 'all data will be preserved', I didn't object as I wanted to keep my settings. I rebooted.

I don't think I can play with any of the Anti-Theft stuff for phones.
Firewall is fine, Deny checked in the heading is good. Editing works fine.
All previous options and settings look ok to me.
List of permissions looks ok.
Scanned 99 applications in 33sec. "Scanning apps" in the notification appeared 3 times.
Definitions update is from 20120114-01 6 hours ago, so no new update is likely for a bit.
Seems ok so far.

One thing has not changed - I updated, manually, an application and there was no evidence that Avast was scanning. We discussed it in beta for the previous version here:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=91280.0
And I think the last person confirmed what I saw, or rather, didn't, but he never answered :(

I think someone in the company reported something like this to me as well which means I might get a hands on such an "affected" tablet and fix the issue :) I have put this to my task list so will get to it soon hopefully.

Automatic def updates seem to work flawlessly now, for me at least.
I haven't had any problems so far with this build.

Thank you for the great product!

Few observations and questions:

1. Yesterday market said there's an Avast update to 1.0.1436. I wonder why since I already had this version since the 14-Jan.

2. Definition updates have been coming in nicely, sometimes twice in 24hrs.

3. Still no evidence of scanning when updating applications (see Reply#6). With one exception - I THINK I caught a glimpse of a quick message while I was updating Titanium Backup (root) (3.6MB), but then definitely nothing on Weather Channel (2.7MB) nor QQPlayer (5.8Mb). I'm posting the file sizes, because after Titanium, it occured to me that a large application might take longer to scan and so the notification would be visible, but that theory got blown away by QQPlayer. Filip, you gotta get yourself Thrive, it's a nice tablet and you can test :)

4. Password question: I didn't have any. But I decided to walk through some of those Anti-Theft settings, which I know do not apply to my non-phone tablet. One of the things I had to do was set a password. So I did. Later I uninstalled Antitheft, uninstaller worked fine. I removed the password. The main screen (one with the menu of Virus, Privacy...Settings) in the upper right corner says Secured. I don't think I saw it before. Is it related to the now nonexistent password? Or something else?

5. We need a log. I know I sound like a broken record on that subject.

All that Android stuff is so baffling to me!!!!!
Avast About says .1463.
I click on the Market icon.
YES, today I do see .1473 of Jan-17. Yesterday it showed .1463 and forced the download.
My options are OPEN. One option. OPEN. That means run Avast.
So I click Open, hoping to see the Update button. But Avast opens.
Version is 1463.
In Avast, I click Check for updates now, knowing full well it's not the upgrade of application, but definitions. Sure enough it says I'm up to date.
Normally Update would show on the Market. Well, it does not.
So I'm doomed, forever, on this version I suppose :(

Something else I noticed. Avast, lower case avast, used to be at the bottom of the My Apps in the Market. This stupid android is case sensitive. Ok, so it was there. It's no longer there. I'm ready to throw the whole freaking thing out the window, not avast of course, but android. They're clueless.

If you have the beta installed, I think Android Market doesn't recognize those so you can't update it. You have to uninstall the beta and install the Market version. That's unfortunately how it works :(

Already answered.

Great!

Yeah well, I'm not in charge of buying hardware so kinda out of my hands. If the Thrive gets more Market share, I'm sure we will get one. I might do a small debug app to fix it remotely with your support, but I'm kinda out of time recently :(

4. Password question: I didn't have any. But I decided to walk through some of those Anti-Theft settings, which I know do not apply to my non-phone tablet. Or something else?

The "Secured" status (or any other) should be there at all times, it's completely unrelated to Anti-Theft.

5. We need a log. I know I sound like a broken record on that subject.

I need a lot of stuff which doesn't mean I'm gonna get it :) Can't disclose any plans for future versions so can't really say we will or won't do it :(

Yes, sure looks like the market got confused. What I did was NOT uninstall. I used the browser instead searching for avast mobile, got a link to market, clicked that. And there came a text box for google login which I did, and the current version showed up, it said is compatible with my box and an INSTALL button. It worked immediately. The result is that avast is now up to date, and it is in the My Apps list, at the end, as it used to be, so all is well.

Thanks for the answers to the other questions. It's all clear now.

this is really a question belonging to the Anti-Theft part of the forum.

Should have researched AMS Beta more before installing.  Still no solution to Dinc2 phones running 2.3X inability to use the locate feature unless you are rooted.  This is a major feature most smartphone users want.  Any suggestions other than rooting your phone (which voids the warranty).

What is your issue on your phone using locate?
