What error messages are you getting from avast ?

I had a problem after the windows update on a winXP Pro system, reporting not secured, a fix didn't work, but two reboots had it working again.

Try a repair of avast:
Win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

Tried Repair. Said Error processing packages. Pls use full update.
Used Full Update - Said error while changing the product config. BTW, am using paid version.
Any insight vastly appreciated! Fix-it didn't work either and neither has rebooting.

You didn't say if there were any avast errors after the WU ?

Fix-it (windows fix-it), isn't what I was talking about but the avast Fix in the Summary section of the avastUI when a shield isn't running or is reported as not protected, there is normally a Fix now button, etc.

Looks like you will have to do a reinstall of avast. probably best to do a clean reinstall (ensure that you have a copy of your license key first, you did save a copy):

- Download the latest version of avast, 6.0.1367 (see below for download links) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).
Pro AV:  - http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe)
AIS:     - http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exe)

  • 1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
  • 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
  • 3. install the latest version, reboot.

You won't even get them if Defender is turned off. To the OP, although Windows Defender doesn't usually cause any problems with Avast, you may be an exception. I would recommend turning it off since it doesn't do anything that Avast doesn't do.

Which exact "full update" you used? If you have avast Pro, then the message was for you to download the Pro Trial (no the Free). The same for AIS: download AIS trial.

In any case, after the installation over your current one, reboot.

It is also not clear to me what you meant with "changing the product config". In any case, as I said, you install first the same edition of avast that you currently have, and reboot. Only after the reboot start changing settings or testing the results.

If you have not uninstalled avast yet, then you shouldn't need to care for the license (at least not for now).

I had a similar problem on my laptop where I was running Avast alongside Widows Defender under Windows 7 Home Premium. It stopped working completely, Windows would start and the system would crash. It took me ages to figure out that Avast was the problem. I have reinstalled twice and still no joy so I removed Avast from the system temporarily until I can sort out Defender. It works fine on my Windows 7 desktop but I'm not running Defender on that machine. So sounds like a conflict with Defender, and not a Windows update glitch.

First download and save a new copy of the latest avast http://www.avast.com/download-software then follow the instuctions here for removal of you current version http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Your recieving the warnings because avast is now at 7.0.1426 so your quite outdated, i also recommend when installing the new version that you read through the process properly so you can untick the features that may not be required ( google chrome on first screen ) then proceed with a custom install where you'll have the ability to choose what security features you want or not.
