Title: Viruses stole City College of S.F. data for years...
Post by: AndrzejL on January 18, 2012, 08:05:38 PM
Quote
Personal banking information and other data from perhaps tens of thousands of students, faculty and administrators at City College of San Francisco have been stolen in what is being called "an infestation" of computer viruses with origins in criminal networks in Russia, China and other countries, The Chronicle has learned.

More? (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/01/13/MN4Q1MO9JK.DTL&ao=all)

And they have only found out recently. Should have used Avast ;)...

No, it just means that they are all together, if you are interested in those sorts of things, you only need to click the Notify button and you get notified about new posts. Or if you have contributed in a topic, you get notified about replies.

Yeah, more or less what DavidR said, its just about consolidating everything under on roof.

There is security news that warrants its own topic, though.  In that case, post the news in the dedicated thread, and a link to the topic for discussion.  Otherwise the dedicated thread becomes swamped with discussion instead of just news.  Just this is not one of them, its more or less SSDD, another day another dollar, etc.....colleges/universities have been, are, and likely will continue to be, malware hotbeds.

Universities are one of the worst offenders along with hospitals at protecting the financial records and confidential info in their databases.

Well its not like you did anything wrong.  It would be different if there were a list of hard rules written somewhere, but there is not, so its pretty much a combination of common sense/courtesy, and not knowing the right thing to do until you do the wrong one. ;)

Very lightly moderated, in case you have not noticed.  Which has its ups and downs.
