Title: avast detects and freezes
Post by: mantra on November 28, 2004, 08:23:09 AM
hi

i update avast to the last program version!
and i received some virii by email , and avast did detect them
the virii are packed in zip files
when i tried to open the zip file and extract the virii file in a directory
the pc did freeze and 2/3 minutes after avast did scream and let me delete or remove the *.scr file! why?

You should never unzip a zip file that has been detected as infected!  The zip itself is probably infected never mind the file inside!

It really would help if you also tell us the OS you are using and the exact version of Avast.

Do you have virus mail alerts set up? Another thread here indicates that this may actually be a problem...

Thanks

Please answer my previous questions and let us know what email client you are using and what providers in Avast you have installed.

Also tell us your settings.

The more (relevant) info we have, the better we can give support. ;)

Is this "lockup" for a few minutes (when you unzip infected files to your disk) repeatable? If yes - what are your settings of the Standard Shield?

I must say I tried and it worked OK here...
Do you have the "Show detailed info on performed action" turned on for the Standard Shield provider? You saved the zip file to disk, right? What virus was that?

You mean the avast! Virus Cleaner? Yes, it tries to remove every known registry entry when it removes a worm/virus.
As for avast! Antivirus itself - it removes the common "autostart" items (referencing the virus) from registry when it deletes/moves the virus file. It doesn't remove useless entries created by the worm/virus for its own purposes.
