I have used avast for a long time on my personal computers as well as putting it on family members computers. Recently, a friend from work asked me to work on their computer and put a good antivirus on the machine. Naturally, I chose to use avast. Well ever since I downloaded and installed the program I get an error on update. I choose to manually update both the definitions as well as the program and the update times out after 1 second stating "Last encountered error: The package is broken, total time: 1s". Please help. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail. Thanks in advance.

what AV was installed before avast ?
was it uninstalled before installing avast ?
did you use a removal tool to clear any leftover files ?

I dont know if this will help but, I also am unable to run updates on WIN7. I get an error when searching for the updates. Any help would be much appreciated.

I uninstalled Norton which was preloaded on the computer. I did not us a removal tool to clear any leftovers. Then I installed avast.

Thank you Pondus, I was able to get it to work after running the installation program, and running ccleaner. I never had this error before and I have put avast on many a family's computer.
