Hi all,
a new program update has just been released (official release, not a beta). It has a version number of 4.5.546 and hopefully fixes many of the 4.5 problems. It is based on the 4.5.536 beta. All beta users are transfered to this version automatically (just invoke program update).
I deeply believe that this build will be a successful one and will enable us to move forward.
Thanks!
Vlk
Note: Updated for 4.5.546...
-
I've been working with it for ten minutes now and sofar no problem ;D
-
Does it fix the auto update problem???
-
Working great here, no mail problems or anything.
Well done Alwil Team 8), you deserve a holiday ;).
--lee
-
Tried downloading the latest version from the main page but it still fetches me v4.5.523
-
Yes, for some reason it is not possible to update to last version without installing the beta first. Maybe this will be corrected quickly
-
Yes yes yes yes yes ... ok best version so far :) ;) :D ;D 8) :P
No bug so far on so many machines that's like magic ... :)
-
Ok, I hate to admit it, but there is a problem. When I first discovered Avast, I thought "what the heck, lets give it a try". Easy said, easy done. Alwil made me an addict. Now with the latest release I got even more addicted. I already contacted my lawyers to see if I can make any money out of this ;D ;D ;D
[kidding mode off]

Thanks guys. BTW The sfx's (self extracting setup executables) have now been updated as well.
-
works great for me... but then it always has :) Never have had a problem with it

I had no problem going from the 4.5.523 official build to the 4.5.542 build and I never installed the beta builds.
Did you do a manual program update?
Have you rebooted since the attempted update?
-
maybe will be nice to put this major version into Avast iNews , it really deserve to be mentioned and updated (liked that feature :)
-
Thanks Vlk
It even fixed the System Restore problem. ;D

Same here -- went smoothly just like previous version upgrades (seemed a little bigger this time, though), and I've never played with the beta either.
-
Thanks Vlk
It even fixed the System Restore problem. ;D
Mine too...
Not an email problem untill now... fingers crossed ;D
-
Thanks Vlk
It even fixed the System Restore problem. ;D
Well, can't say that in general. My wife's PC still has exactly the same issue... are we gonna forget about that problem now, just because everybody is happy except one users... one = no one ? Well, I'm not sure about that...
But it would be great if we see that someone is still trying to find a fix for that problem on every and each computer...
-
Sasha, we won't give up ;D
What I did:
1) Update to 4.5.542
2) Boot
3) Open System Restore
4) Click on 'ok' and not on 'apply'
it worked for me... Did you do anything different?
-
Thanks Technical for your interest, you're the man... listen, I'll post some strange results now in that thread where we started everything... oK ? That way we will avoid any further possible confusion... Please check this thread in about few minutes... I'll post there...

Update went fine, and all is well here on my system!
{EDIT} To say except for the system restore issue Sasha is also having.

No problems before, no problems now with the latest version, thank you from my heart team Avast.

Same here :)
-
Still no problems sofar, except for the screensaver problem I am having.
Avast32 didn't had that problem, it started with 4.1.
-
Ok, might of found a problem.
Avast P2P shield doesn't seem to be scanning my music downloads, it seems to scan winmx itself on opening, but not song downloads (stays on C:\Program Files\WinMX\index.dat), if tried with two songs and had the same result, from begging to end nothing happens, i first noticed it when the little avast "A" icon wasn't spinning away in the task bar, winmx is deffinatly checked in the customization box, and the sensitivity bar is on high.
EDIT: OK just done another test, i noticed that just after the file is downloaded from winmx Avast scans "C:\Program Files\WinMX\library.dat", could this be it scanning the song, i thought it was suppost to say the song it scanned in the P2P shield? (i download to my desktop btw).
Also same happens with or without my firewall open or closed, (ZoneAlarm FREE version:5.5.062.000).

My avast will not update from 4.5.523 to 4.5.42. Program update set ask when update is available. I did get a virus data base update this morning and that's all...Manual Update doesn't work. Restarted PC twice still no notice of any program updates, manual update still will not get the new version.
a61
-
What do you mean, manual update will not get the new version? It says up-to-date? Or what message do you get?
Thx.
-
Hi VLK,
Program update set Ask when update is available. When I click "Update now" nothing happens at all, no messages show, and Avast doesn't update.
-
Check if the "avast.setup" process is running (task manager). If so, kill it and try again.
The fact that you have it set to "ask when available" and it is still not asking is normal because there's a random delay (of 0-7 days) to distribute the server load evenly).
Thanks
Vlk
-
Just checked and "avast.setup" was not running. I reset Avast to Automatic on program update. Restarted PC, no update happened, opened Update window, clicked "Update now" and it didn't update.
Avast.setup isn't running, and it's not blocked by firewall.
a61
-
What about Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> avast antivirus -> Change/Remove -> Update ?
-
I will try that. If it doesn't work I'll leave it alone for a while to see if I'm the only one who is having the problem. If it does work I'll post back.
a61
-
That did it, have the new version now.
Thanks! ;D
-
Well, I wish I could say everything is fine.
Now, my computer wants to continually reboot.
the Avast "wants to restart" message keeps coming up.
Anyone experience thius yet? This error occurred right after the update to 542 last night.
My XP seems ok, but the W98 has the problem.
Have not updated the ME system yet until I can figure out what is going on.
Truthfully, I now fear every program update. Not once has an update been installed without causing havoc on one of my systems. :'(
Oh well.....so much for the word universal. ;D
-
There is a thread with a possible solution. I think it was Vlk who gave it and it had something to do with a registry key. Gonna try to find it.
-
Yes, this is a bug that will be fixed promptly. There's another forum thread about this. It's only a win9x thing... sorry. :-\
Truthfully, I now fear every program update. Not once has an update been installed without causing havoc on one of my systems.
Well havoc... it's not that bad is it...? :-[

Does this help?

Auto-update for defs works fine for me. I frankly don't know if my ask-if-available for upgrades is behaving properly, since I generally do a manual check for those anyway, especially if I know there's a new one out or about to come out.
-
...and who's gonna be first now? :) hint, hint
-
...and who's gonna be first now? :) hint, hint
If you mean checking the ask-when-available thing, I promise to keep hands-off next time until that's had a chance to do its thing. What the heck, everything seems to be working fine on my system, so it's not like I frantically need the next upgrade the instant it comes online.
-
While we are at this... I've noticed so many threads speaking about new updates... one minute it's 542, very next minute it's 546... that's great, but it's very hard to find thread that gives us info about latest build. We, who like to surf these forums more often than new guys are pretty lucky, 'cause there is slight chance to find those information, but new guys will have so much trouble searching...
My suggestion, and I don't believe it's a huge request, is... to make something like on this screenshot. That's the part of Pop Peeper (E-mail notification program) forum. It's called announcement, and it's pretty much closed thread. The only one who can add it, is moderator or programmer itself... like Vlk, Pavel or Igor...
In that thread, you can find just announcement about some new updates and stuff like that... very very useful if you ask me.
Can we have it in here ? Sticky locked thread... very simple to make and maintenance. We all would have a great oportunity to easily find latest information about latest program updates... and, we will have update history as well...
Cheers !
-
And here are the contents of that thread (actually, little forum)...
-
...and who's gonna be first now? :) hint, hint
What's new in the 4.5.546 ?
Did you see this? http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=9189;start=75#lastPost
Very good idea Sasha 8), the name of the thread should change from 4.5.542 to 4.5.546 :P
-
Aha, the light dawns ... OK, if I understand correctly then it could be up to 8 days before my ask-when-available "wakes up" to discover 546, but I'll sit back and wait, as promised. 8)
-
Wonderful idea to have a sticky announcements thread - I'm new to this forum and am finding it very confusing to keep track of all the issues and updates etc. (I was reading posts for ages just now before I even realized there was a new .546 version out today. I'm downloading it now.)
An announcement posted by one of the moderators would be a huge help, perhaps with a link to a changelog elsewhere.
Thanks for all the hard work.
-
VLK,
"Havoc"...only in jest my friend. My computers complain alot but I try not to listen to them. ;)
Which reality are we in now? 542 or 546? Sounds like a Star Trek trip. ;D
Have not tried the new 546 on my Win98 yet, but will post how it goes.
Thanks for keeping on top of the problems and issuing a new build.
Sasha,
I like your idea of an area on the forum where we can read up on the changes in a new release or build.
-
Great, guys... so far no complains about this idea, that's good. And I really think it would be really useful. Also, Vlk wouldn't have so much difficulties to decide in which part of the forum he should post some announcement. Let's put it in root folder ( hehe ;D ). It will be much more accessible for everyone. Always, when he or any other member of Alwil team has to say something or announce something, all they have to do is to go to ANNOUNCEMENTS thread, post it in there, and everybody happy ;D Make the subject line of that thread marked in red or some other color, so it would attract our attention even more...
Guys, let's do something about this issue then... ;)
Cheers !
-
Sasha, just a suggestion, the ANNOUNCEMENTS thread must be, in my opinion, just for the Moderators of the avast Home/Pro board.
Otherwise, we will start posting announcements of every program in the world ;D
-
Whatever you guys think it's the best... everything sounds good, although I was thinking it would be great to see that thread as soon as you enter avast! forums... let's say if some new user saw forums link on avast! web site, he clicked forums link, and baaaam... information of the very latest build is in front of him...
Whatever you guys think is the best, it would be great... but, we have to have that thread...
Cheers !
-
The idea certainly has merit if limitations are set.
Since it might contain various "new" information, some kind of sorting has to be in place so one knows exactly where to find information.
Too much information will bury older information.
I suggest that the Topic area have a sub header when new stuff is added like this:
New Announcement: Avast build 606 released (can't wait.. ;D)
New Announcement: Avast new skins
IN other words, the title of the information will be reflected after the Topic header.
Make sense???
-
Perfect, exactly what I had in my mind, but I though it would be too much to ask for the start... this is exactly what I wanted... someone else with this idea. ;)
We just need Alwil to give us their opinion on this one.
-
Actually, we need some one from Alwil to start it. :)
-
Yes, I'm well aware of that...
PAVEL !!!
-
After update to version 4.5.546 Avast show "usiGetSkin" error and stop.
Before update its work great! Iam using Avast home portuguese language.
Please help! ???
#####
All back work great now! See below:
Select START -> RUN...
Enter the following command:
If you have Windows NT or 2000:
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
If you have Windows 95, 98 or ME:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
If you have Windows XP:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX
Press OK (or Enter).
A message saying that the file was successfully registered should appear..
Good job Technical
registering ACTSKIN4.OCX fixed it
many thanx pal
;D :) :D ;D ;D
-
Yes, I'm well aware of that...
PAVEL !!!
I believe Pavel is Deaf and I don't think he heard you ;D SZC

.546 a reality? Very strange, yesterday I had 456, this morning I woke up and saw avast.setup asking for permission to access the net. Hmm, I thought, another update? I checked, but no. Last night a setup check had put 542 back !! Now I am again on 546.
What the heck is going on? "Screwup" by Alwil?

1. About the announcement board.
a. you are posting off topic!
b. posts like HALLOOO PAVEL may sound funny to you but they really are of NO USE.
c. it's actually not a bad idea but it's definitely not something you can't live without. That is, it may be implemented but not immediately. The forum will be moved to another system and this will probably be a good opportunity to add this feature.
2. Eddy's update
What's in your servers.def?
-
Here is my servers.def

edit: I don't know if it has to do with it, but I updated manually when 546 came out.

Hello, hello. I updated to v4.5.546 and now I can scan my outgoing email again ;D ;D ;D
Thank you Alwil Team 8)

What's in your servers.def?
a) Off topic ? Ok, erase them all... I don't need them. I don't count my posts anyway...
b) HALLOOO PAVEL ? Where did I post anything like that ? Previous reply with picture ? What's wrong with that ? Gee... if I insulted anyone with that innocent little reply, I APPOLOGIZE. Again, I have no problems appologizing... as you can see... I wasn't the one that said Pavel is deaf. Pavel always listened everything I or anyone else said in these forums. I didn't want to insult anyone, and that's for sure, you know that we like to make small jokes just to keep good atmosphere in these forums. I didn't say he is deaf, I would never ever say that. That was someone else's remark who replied to my post after me...
c) good or bad idea, it's not a question... we all saw numerous posts accross the whole forum regarding new updates. It was like confussion, especially for new users... it looks like we can not recommend anything any more, seems like nothing is so important, so that's why I'm not going out with my "stupid" ::) ideas anymore...
Btw, that Announcements thread is already there, so I don't really see what's the big deal...

Was anything ever figured out on this? I too manually updated to version 4.5.546. After the re-boot, Zone alarm alerted me that avast.setup wanted to access the net. Naturally I was expecting this since it was a new build, and I set it up in zone alarm so it didn't have to ask each time.. Hours later, I walk into my office, and zone alarm is once again alerting me to avast.setup wanting to connect. I look in the program log, and avast.setup now has question marks all the way across in zone alarm. So it updated itself to a new version again, or something. Any ideas?

Interesting, Tipton...
The same thing happened with me so that might be part of the problem I am having with my internet mail provider not starting unless I do it manually. And I also had set ZA...
Darn, I just checked and had to reset Avast in ZA

CoJo
ZA and setting or granting permission:
You have to grant permission When a program first accesses the Internet. Check of the box for it to remember.
When a program is updated, it becomes a NEW program as far as ZA is concerned.
Since there have been a lot of program updates lately, we've also had to give permission often.
Hope that helps.
-
Thanks, Bob...
but that is the first thing I did because I knew there was a problem with it.
Now this morning, I saw there was an update for ZA, but think I will wait for a bit and enjoy everything working correctly ;)

I know this is just a "praise" post and maybe not appropriate but I decided 'what the hell"
VLK & Technical
You ALL deserve a BOW .... not only for the speed, care , concern you show for EVERY post of distress (I must admit I get a bit "mad" when I read people that blame avast etc for what almost always ends up an issue they didn't sort out
fine post your issue but wish they would leave out the tone of the posts being one of "Blame"
Ok this last MAJOR upgrade had some bugs and as I have posted (as others) wait a week before you install to make sure you can handle any problems
So as not many others have Bowed to this wonderful new release (c'mon now all mails are not diverted ) all to help make this product EASIER for us (or new users)
I did wait until you made this posts before I updated
and I even notice the whole scanning is faster - and more stable
I like member CoJo am also waiting to upgrade Zone Alarm until I see reports on that -
Ok enuff of Praising the whole team
have been using you for years win 98 , XP new PC's and never fails avast is my first installation
thanks
Rick

rexdal, I finally updated ZA...and yet again, I had to allow permission for anything for Avast! but everything is fine.
At least this time I knew what to look for and take care of it :)
