I am having the same trouble, but I am now at version 4.6 (latest at this time) . ever since I installed (I purchased the pro version) this product Just last week, and it continually asks me "avast! needs to restart your operating system. Do you want to do it now?" every time I reboot. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it and get the same thing.  HELP PLEASE

I have sent an email to support over a week ago and have not gotten a responce.

In one thread above, it was asked to send the last 100 lines of a file. I will post my file here in my next message.

Please help asap.  Thanks,  George Miller

I deleted it, and still go the message. Deleted it again, and made double sure it had not be re-created, just before a third dry and still got the message.  What else can I try?  Would it matter that I had the Avast free edition installed a few weeks ago, then uninstalled it?

thanks for your help.

The message is popped us only if reboot.txt is there. Please send me the whole <avast>\setup\setup.log file.

I just sent you an email with the attachment fo that log file.  Here is what I wrote:
---------------------
After the last post I did, I deleted it again, rebooted again, and then I didn’t get it. BUT, the file reboot.txt is there in that directory still.
It is right now as I write this, but the last boot up I did not get the message. Since it is there now, will I get it again on the next reboot?

Here is the setup log file.

Just a note, I am still getting them. have there been continual updates recently that would legitimatly cause this, or is this still an anomaly?

thanks again for your help.

Hi,
yesterday I've sent you e-mail with solution to this problem, but I'm not sure if you got it. Please let me know if you have another e-mail address. I'd like to do some tests, to see why this is happening, because we can't reproduce this problem.
To get rid of reboot messages, delete registry key "PendingFileRenameOperations" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager. Be sure to delete it right after restart and not to delete any other keys. Also delete reboot.txt file.
But it would be better if system will be in the same state, just answer No for restart question, don't delete anything and let me know via e-mail.

I sent you an email this morning with my email addresses. I am willing to do some tests with you.  Thanks for helping me with this.   I will go ahead and delete the registry entry and give it a try.  Thanks,  George

I rebooted, deleted them both, and pressed "no" on the reboot prompt question,   then manually rebooted.  I have rebooted 3 times since and still am getting the message asking me if I want to reboot. Did I do something wrong?

Thanks,
george

Well, I have sent a lot of stuff in to you guys and haven't heard back in a while.  I know it may seem trivial, but I am very frustrated and considering returning the software for a refund.

I replied to you message below on 4/8/05 will all the information you requested, but have not heard back as to if you found anything:
-------------------
You have just been sent a personal message by Forejt on avast!WEBforum.

IMPORTANT: Remember, this is just a notification. Please do not reply to this email.

The message they sent you was:

Hi,
I've sent you an email again. Probably you didn't receive the previous 2 I've sent from forejt@asw.cz, but your emails are delivered to me successfully, now I'm trying to send from forejt@avast.com. If you don't receive it again, here's the copy:

I think it's caused by Windows file protection, that replaces one version of system file with some other, even if the one we install is higher. Or maybe windows doesnt replace that file at all and it may remain in pending rename operations, so avast asks you for another reboot.

Please send me the following files:
C:\WINNT\system32\psapi.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\psa5.tmp
Search your c: drive for all other occurences of psapi.dll, make sure to search for hidden files and folders too, it will be probably located in C:\WINNT\system32\dllcache, maybe in some other folder too. After you find all those files, compress them and send it to me with description where each file was located. Depending on how many files will it be, send certainly those from system32 folder, and if you'll find others, check if they are not the same (in this case, send only the location and file size). Also, open regedit.exe, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager, export this key to some file and send it too.

Then I'll answer with some other suggestions...

Thanks,

Jiri Forejt

I will continue to await a responce...

thanks again for your help in this matter.

Please remember, I am a PAYING customer and not using the free home version. I do work for a company of 100 + employees and can influence what we choose to use in the future.  I know this software works fine on many PC's my friends have at home, so I have faith in it. This is just a fluke in this instance, I believe.  But customer support is important, as you well know.

It seems that somewhere along the line, the restart messages stopped. I don't know why.  So lets drop this for now. Thanks for your help.
