So, i scanned my computer today and i had a rootkit.. I clicked apply where it says if you'd like to remove or move it to chest and it said will be applied after restart(something like that) and it asked to do a boottime scan.. so i did. Nothing came up. And then i go to the scan log and try to delete it and i get this"Error access is denied(5)" The file directory is(if im not aloud to put this out here then tell me) C:\Windows\Temp\SDIAG_14ff66d-eab3-aa39-298c206cd949\DiagPackage.dll Also the status is Threat: Rootkit: Hiddenfile
I scanned immediatly after it said this with Hitmanpro, Superantispyware(both found nothing;'( ), and now im doing a scan with Microsoft windows malicious software removal tool to scan.. I for some reason cant download Malwarebytes as it says something like cannot find file and then the name.. Please give me anyinformation about how to remove the rootkit. Thanks!( malwarebytes randomly deleted itself on the 16th after i uninstalled itunes)..
EDIT: System restored to the day malwarebytes worked. Was able to install it with only one problem but it had done that when i first installed it(when i first got my computer). Currently scanning, will update if it detects anything. Also, installed TDSSkiller and Gmer.
EDIT#2: Malwarebytes and TDSSkiller detected nothing.
EDIT#3: Used CCleaner, McAfee Stinger & rootkit remover, and 1 other anti-rootkit. They found nothing aswell. still kinda on alert because i dont think its gone.. Also ran 2 more scans with Avast(full scans, found nothing)

-
What does OTl and the other thing stand for? Sorry im a nub;P
-
Follow the guide, and attach the OTL and aswMBR logs
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
When i downloaded OTl and tried to run it Avast poped up and said to move it to the chest(i didnt). is that bad or is it supposed to do that?
-
no....so ignore.......OTL is a diagnostic tool and aswMBR is a rootkit scanner
-
Pondus, after running the second thing it wants you todo my computer got The blue screen and said it shut down to prevent damage.. so i guess im outta luck there..
-
OK, Essexboy and Jeffc is notified so wait until they arrive........it may be several hours
-
Hi,
You mention the "second thing"? Is that aswMBR.exe? Were you able to get OTL ran? If so please post both the OTL.txt and Extras.txt logs into your next reply. :)
-
I was able to run a scan with otl and then when I ran the avast root kit one got a blue screen and said window shut down to prevent damage. I'm currently not at my house but when I get there I'll get on my computer and post the logs. Possibly I'll retry the avast root kit scanner and see what it said under the windows shutdown blue screen as I cant remember
-
Hi,
For the time being don't run any other scans so that we can see what we are dealing with. When you are able to do so just post the OTL logs and we can go from there. :)
-
Jeff, I system restored last night and the logs are gone.. Should I try a scan with otl just incase or no?
-
Re did the scans, this time the aswbr(what ever its called) didnt give me the blue screen and it found 2 things(outta 5 ;/) posting the attachments now;)
-
Hi,
Not a lot is showing up in your logs now that you did the system restore.
----------
Please download and run ERUNT (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.html) (Emergency Recovery Utility NT). This program allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed. **Remember if you are using Windows Vista as your operating system right-click the executable and Run as Administrator.
----------
Run OTL.exe
- Copy/paste the following text written inside of the code box into the Custom Scans/Fixes box located at the bottom of OTL

Jeff, i get this error when i try to install it." Access violation at address 8B12EB00. Read of address 8B12EB00." What does that mean exactly?
-
Hi FireCubic,
What exactly do you mean "when I try to install it"? Are you trying to run the fix that I provided and that is creating the error or explain what you mean by that.
-
When I'm trying to install ERUNT I get that error
-
Hi,
Let's try another route. :)
----------
Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here (http://"http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.html&pid=494216#entry494216")
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Right-Click and Run as Administrator on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
- Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for further review.
-
Ok, about to do the Combofix thing now. What do i do about the 2 things that aswbr(what ever its called) found?
-
Hi,
We will clear those out. :) Just post the ComboFix log when you get it.
-
Is it supposed to be deleting C:\users\owner\appdata\roaming\windows & C:\windows\install? Ok now it's just sittin there at deleting the folders I mentioned earlier
-
Just let it run. :)
-
Rebooting after like an hour :d posting logs when it reboots( 3 minutes or so)
And here is the log :)
-
Hi,
Seems like we have some files to look for...
Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1 (http://jpshortstuff.247fixes.com/SystemLook.exe)
Download Mirror #2 (http://images.malwareremoval.com/jpshortstuff/SystemLook.exe)
- Right-click and Run as Administrator SystemLook.exe to run it.
- Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
:filefind
*sfcfiles.dll
*ipsec.sys
*psched.sys
- Click the Look button to start the scan.
- When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt
-
Found nothing ;'(
-
Hi,
Do you have your Windows CD available or are you able to borrow one? :) We may need it later.
-
Edit found my recovery discs, And i do have a 32bit copy, not the 64bit one though;*
Another edit.. Opened the Windows Disk case, and it has a 32 bit copy AND 64bit so im ready for the next step;)
-
Great! I am glad that you found it. :)
Please download Farbar Service
Scanner (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/FSS.exe) and run it on the computer with the issue.- Make sure the following options are checked:
- Internet Services
- Windows Firewall
- System Restore
- Security Center
- Windows Update
- Press "Scan".
- It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
- Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

-
Hi FireCubic,
Let's check something out before we continue...
Please delete the current version of Combofix.exe from your desktop and download a new version from here (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) to your desktop.
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications.
Right-click and Run as Administrator on the Combofix.exe and follow the prombts on your display. When finish, it will create a C:\Combofix.txt. Please post this log for further review.

OMG I TRY TO OPEN ANYTHING AMD IT SAYS " illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion. And then where the items at Help!!!!!!!!! It's just stuck at " pecFind by billy o'neal III version 1.5.6. Syntax error and then when it was created... Heelppppp
-
Now combo fix screwed up my comp.... Great
Edit.. System restored now everythings back to normal...except i think the Rootkits still on my computer..
-
Hi,
If I would have seen this in time I would have had you just reboot the system once or twice and that would have fixed the problem. It just means that ComboFix had not released the registry yet.
Let's see what we have to work with now. :)
Please run a new scan with OTL. In the Custom Scan place the following:
netsvcs
Post the log created by OTL into your next reply. Maybe we will get lucky and not have to do too much work to get back to where we were. :D
-
Can I just clean install windows without a back up because this is really taking long and is possibly not even gonna kill the rootkit..
-
Sure you can do that too if that is something that you would like to do.
-
Yea, but what happens if I don't have backup files?
-
Well if you don't have your files backed up someplace than what ever you don't have backed up will be lost if you format your system and start anew. If you are on your computer now and able to access those files you could start backing up your personal files (pics, music, letters...)
-
Well, I just recovered my computer to before first use and backed up my files as I forgot about dell data safe. Do u wantt me to run anything to see if the rootkit is still there or anything?
-
That would be good.
If you would run OTL again I would have a pretty good idea of what we are looking at. When you get that completed just post the log into your next reply.
-
Alright
-
And here are the logs;)
-
Hi,
I don't have a lot of time today but the OTL is not showing the nasty infection you had before. Let's run some other scans and be sure things are on the up and up.
Download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Right-Click and Run as Administrator on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
- Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt for further review.
-
Heres the log :)
-
Hi,
Looking good.
----------
Malwarebytes
I see that you have Malwarebytes already on your computer. Please open Malwarebytes, update it and then run a Quick Scan. Save the log that is created for your next reply.
----------
ESET Online Scanner:
Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here (http://"http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.htmll").
Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.
- Please go here (http://"http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/") then click on: (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS1.gif)
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
- Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS2.gif)
- When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
- Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
- Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
- Scan for potentially unwanted applications
- Scan for potentially unsafe applications
- Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
- Now click on: (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS3.gif)
- The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
- When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
- Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
- When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
- Now click on: (http://i280.photobucket.com/albums/kk173/Dakeyras_album2/EOLS4.gif)
- Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
- Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!
----------
In your next reply please post the logs made by Malwarebytes and ESET online scanner. :)
-
Eset detected 3 things;o Malwarebytes nothing..
-
Hi,
- Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:
ClearJavaCache::
File::
C:\$RECYCLE.BIN\S-1-5-21-2807712318-2501942183-506546610-1001\$RPZ61CR.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell DataSafe Local Backup\hstart.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell DataSafe Local Backup\Components\DSUpdate\hstart.exe
- Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.
- Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
- Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
- ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
- When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
----------
In your next reply please let me know how your system is running and post the log made by ComboFix. :)
-
Here it is:)
-
How is your system running? :)
-
Smooth, way better then when i had the problem in the first place;)
-
Glad to hear things are running better. Let's get some updates on your system. :)
You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE (http://"http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html")
You may want to consider Foxit Reader (http://"http://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/index.php") instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.
Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum (http://"http://www.foxitsoftware.com/bbs/forumdisplay.php?f=3")
In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 9.1.2 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.
----------
Please download JavaRa (http://raproducts.org/click/click.php?id=1) to your desktop and unzip it to its own
folder- Run JavaRa.exe (double-click for XP/right-click and Run as Administrator for Vista), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
- Accept any prompts.
- Open JavaRa.exe (double-click for XP/right-click and Run as Administrator for Vista) again and select Search For Updates.
- Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
----------
Once you get that done please run one last scan with OTL and post the log.
-
Heres the log.:) i didnt download the java thing as i dont trust sourceforge.. Also, internet explorer blocked this webpage for somereason because of a malfunction with a link or a malicious link...
-
Hi FireCubic,
Ok...OTL looks good. :)
Let's update Java manually than so that we don't have outdated software on your system that you will consistently use. Having outdated software will leave "openings" for future infections of your computer.
Go to Start > Control Panel > Java (looks like a coffee cup) > Update tab and select Update Now button > follow any prompts to update Java.
Once complete, in Java select the General tab > in Temp Internet Files section select Settings... > press Delete Files >> once complete close out of Java
----------
Let me know how that works for you and then let me know if there are any malware related problems remaining. :)
-
If I click on controll panel nothing comes up about java just system&security network/Internet hardware and sound programs clock ease of access appearence/personalization and user accs and family safety
-
Hi,
Sorry I have mine on Classic View...on your Control Panel click on Programs and Java should be in there. :)
-
Java's there but there's not update tab u can only click it and then it will open up 4 tabs which are general java security and advanced Edit could I go on there website and download the latest version?
-
Sure you could do that too. I have posted the link for you below. Just be sure to delete all of the older versions that you have on your system once you get that downloaded and installed. :)
http://www.java.com/en/
-
I think theres no more;) thanks Jeff!
-
Hi FireCubic,
Providing that there are no other malware related problems...
IT APPEARS THAT YOUR LOGS ARE NOW CLEAN :D SO LETS DO A COUPLE OF THINGS TO WRAP THIS UP!! :D
This infection appears to have been cleaned, but I can not give you any absolute guarantees. As a precaution, I would go ahead and change all of your passwords as this is especially important after an infection.
----------
The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following text into the Run box as shown and click OK.
Combofix /Uninstall
(Note: There is a space between the ..X and the /U that needs to be there.)
----------
Clean up with OTL:
- Right-click and Run as Administrator OTL.exe to start the program.
- Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
- On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
- Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
----------
Any of the logs that you created for use in the forums or remaining tools that have not yet been removed can be deleted so they aren't cluttering up your desktop.
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:
1. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Enable Protected Mode in Internet Explorer. This helps Windows Vista users stay more protected from attack by running Internet Explorer with restricted privileges as well as reducing the ability to write, alter or destroy data on your system or install malicious code. To make sure this is running follow these steps:- Open Internet Explorer
- Click on Tools > Internet Options
- Press Security tab
- Select Internet zone then place check next to Enable Protected Mode if not already done
- Do the same for Local Intranet, Trusted Sites and Restricted Sites and then press Apply
- Restart Internet Explorer and in the bottom right corner of your screen you will see Protected Mode: On showing you it is enabled.
3. Use and update an anti-virus software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to use and update your anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.
4. Firewall
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on firewalls can be found here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html). **There are firewalls listed in this tutorial that could be downloaded and used but I would personally only recommend using one of the following two below:
Online Armor Free (http://download.cnet.com/Online-Armor-Free/3000-10435_4-10426782.html)
Agnitum Outpost Firewall Free (http://download.cnet.com/Agnitum-Outpost-Firewall-Free/3000-10435_4-10913746.html)
5. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current. Windows XP users can visit Windows update (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp) regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Windows Vista/7 users can open the Start menu > All Programs > Windows Update > Check for Updates (in left hand task pane) to update these systems. Without these you are leaving the back door open.
6. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS (http://"http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm"). This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers. For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002 (http://"http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm")
