Title: XP Limited user account & Avast
Post by: Jarmo P on December 03, 2004, 01:19:27 PM
I installed yesterday Avast and removed Norman antivirus.

1. My question is if Avast can be normally operated using my XP limited user account???

Could not find any specific info on the subject.
Everything seems to be working fine, but all hints are wellcome.

2. I regret a bit uninstalling my Norman with still 14 months licence to go. Wanted to make sure no conflicts will come running 2 AVs even though only one scans realtime.
Any opinions of virus infection recovery capabilities between Avast and Norman.

If Norman is an on-demand AV and not a Resident on-access then it is possible that the two could be installed.

I believe that this has been discussed before, so a search of the forums for Norman may return some further information.

Avast needs to be installed when logged in as administrator (xp pro) or when logged in as user with admin rights (xp home).

If Avast can be fully operated under a limited user account, depends on the settings in the user/group mangement and, if there are any, on the restrictions for that particulair user.

Thanks for the replies.

David, I did run Norman after Avast install only as on-demand, and it worked just fine with Avast. I was just too chicken and uninstalled it, hated the systray icon maybe. Regret it a bit now, but maybe better to not try installing Norman back as a second hand on-demand scanner?

There is no subject search in this site?

Eddy, I run Windows Home edition, those user/group management things are maybe for XP Pro users?
Of course I installed Avast as an administrator.
But updates for antivirus database can be managed with a Limited account?

How about the right mouse shortcut menu click for the specific file Avast check, does it work with the limited user account?
Read in the Finnish language version I have (4.5.546) instructions that I should be logged as an admin to have it work properly. Outdated info?

Must say otherwise that the language version seems to be well translated. I installed it so instead of english, so I could help my father who just got a new puter and not very fluent in english.

Yeah, there is a Search button, Finally found it, remember I am new here  ;)
I find this a responsive forum, works better than most.
Norman sucked in that department.
One reason I dumbed it.

You discover our secret  8)

I see no reason for you to uninstall Norman as it can be a second (backup, non resident) scanner.

1. Avast works and updates normally when operated using my XP limited user account.
2. If you let both AVs with residents enabled, they will conflict.
3. About capabilities between Avast and Norman I can't say much...
