Title: not satisfied
Post by: MWassef on December 04, 2004, 09:16:07 AM
I am not satified with alwil regarding thier way of handling received virus samples.. ::)
I submitted a trojan sample to alwil, Grisoft and CA in the same day.
alwil did not respond till now  :(
Grisoft replied 2 days after...
CA - with thier outstanding Virtue Automation system  - replied with in minuets.
I think a famous company like alwil should have more decent sytem for receiving virus samples.
thanx in adance..

Mina, this was clarified a lot of times...
Alwil does not have an automatic response for virus submissions.
Only few times we will receive an answer from Karel (virus analyst).
Anyway, you know the most important thing is that they're working for us to release the virus database update as soon as possible. This is what counts.
You must trust in your security company  8)

Mina

In the end it really doesn't matter if they reply or not, the only important thing is that the virus samples are added, which they are quickly in my opinion.  ;)

Sometimes I think why don't we all start working to Alwil team all over the world?  ;D
Yeah, Mina, a little answer from them won't harm that much  ;)

Were they actual viruses?  :P, or just spyware/adware?

Or maybe you could try sending them again, a little 'prod' so to speak.

new variants of ByteVerify trojan.

How did you come accross these btw, (email?)

Anyway, it may just be that Alwil has been overloaded with samples (i sent a couple off today), so they might not of got to yours yet, remember there only a small AV company compared to Nortan and CA.

Then again they might add it when they do one of those huge trojan updates??

minacross,

I understand your point however, please consider what has to be done with a sample.  Every variant cannot be entered into the database for every "new" trojan, worm or virus. It would become enormous.  The proper method is to analyze the code string within each variant, comparing it to known viri to determine the "constant footprint" which is what is entered into the database.

This way whenever the "footprint" is detected, the virus is identified no matter if it is disguised in a "new shape".  This is sort of how heuristics works as well.

The Avast Team is very busy in its' daily operation having about 2 dozen employees.   I am sure that they look at every sample sent to them, test the sample, analyze it, and then when the best method of detection is determined.....add it to the VPS file.

I am sure that you can imagine how many samples get sent to them.  WE on the forum are now 9000 strong with tens of thousands of Avast downloads.  It is understandable that they cannot respond to each and every support request.

The end result is all that counts, and I truly believe that we are well protected with Avast Home and Pro.
