I see that many people have switched to AVAST from AVG. What does AVAST have that AVG doesn't, other than a more flexible (but ridiculously complicated) way of configuring periodic scans?

A very good (free-)support ;) and better detection and smaller & more frequent updates and the possibility to send in new malware and and.. ;)

I can say more than one thousand advantages from avast... ;)
I hope I never have to come back to AVG anymore.
But, using the word ridiculouly I think you do not want to listen more.

It is real easy to schedule a scan with the Pro version.

- Different languages (and not only English like AVG :P)

Overall, in my opinion Avast Home Edition has more features than AVG Free but that not make Avast HE better than AVG Free in every cases.
AVG Free runs smoothly and less obtrusive than Avast HE on slow machine but Avast HE has more powerful features. When it comes to detection rates (especially real-world detection rates) I don't really know which better I often have many new-live malware (e.g. Trojandownloader) that AVG detects but Avast not and Avast detects but AVG not and both miss but Kaspersky detects.
But in most cases, Avast is far better, IMHO... :)

You can also change the appearance of avast skins (i love this feature myself)
Also all providers have sensitivity bars, and in windows 2000/NT/XP Internet mail, P2P provider both set themselfs up automaticly.

What it boils down to is personal likes or dislikes of any program that a person may use. Even Kaspersky has been known to not detect some infections that are out when other AV programs have. This is normal for any AV program paid for or a free one. You will not find a better support forum for a program than what you will find here IMO.

Lets not forget the latest addition to an already great AV, 'Network Shield.'
Network Shield provider protects your computer from Internet worm attacks. It works similarly to a firewall, even though it does not fully substitutes it. The Network Shield does not require any user interaction.
There would appear that there is only one other AV now doing something similar after avast's release of Network Shield. This is very useful in potentially stopping first day virus infection, which uses similar routes of infection, MS Exploits, etc. (not to mention available free).

I totally agree with your point. But in my opinion, ALWIL team should more focus and add more other malware (besides general viruses/worms/trojans) such as spyware, adware to VPS file and should more quickly add them. I've noticed that NOD32 started detect more and more spyware/adware-like in my collection (I sent them to ALWIL but almost of them haven't yet added to VPS file). Sometimes it's hard to tell the average users what's the difference between type of malware that Avast focuses on or what is the real threats so when Avast fails to what others do, Avast can be bad in users' opinion.

I do have two questions:
1) Somehow the selection of folders to be scanned is lost between sessions, and needs to be made each time I use the program. How can I make my choices stick?
2) Once a virus is found, I am alerted and asked for what to do next. Is there a way to make that choice (delete infected files) permanent?

In the Avast Pro version I believe you can choose to delete a found virus. In the free version you can send it to the chest, later find out if the viri has anything to do with a possible Windows file that you need to operate your Windows system. It's not always good to delete an infection right away if it has attached itself to a needed file. There are others here in the forum that can explain this to you better than I can. Hope this helps answer your question somewhat. :)

No, it's an interactive selection. In Professional version you could make a new task and then, keep this selection afterwards.

Left click the 'a' blue icon.
It will start On-access protection
Click on Standard Shield and then on Customize.
Go to Advanced tab and select Silent Mode and the default answer No.
Do the same for the Internet Mail provider and Outlook/Exchange plugin.
The answer Yes in Silent Mode keeps the virus in the file or into the message (attach). You can't configure 'delete the infected file' in the Home version.

For the Standard-Shield, Auto-Delete especially (and to a lesser extent Auto-Move/Quarantine) is imho
a BAD IDEA !!
you can seriously wreck your WIN/Programs with this.. !
For MailScanner/-Provider, it should be ok ;)

It is the same as if you'd compare the night with the day. AVG has always given me troubles with OE and the free version is just pathetic.
