It says that there are new definitions and new program but nothing happens when I try to manually update
either one. I downloaded the Avast 7 (free version) from CNET but I get 2 error messages and the program won't install.
I just bought a new computer today which has Windows 7 (old had Windows XP) but I didn't hook it up yet and don't know if I should install the new version of Avast if I can't get it to run on on this computer.
Never had any problems at all with updates until today.
What do I need to do???? :'(

It seems more users are having some problems with updates during the last few hours (among other issues). It could be some server problem, or something not related to your specific system. If you can, wait some more hours, and then reboot and try again if the updates are working (in the system already running avast).

I can't update either tried to uninstall and it would do that either. Please reassure me that it is working ok. I updated my laptop with no problems at all yesterday.

There was problem with a corrupt definitions update, they are working on it and a fix to resolve the inability to update.

Avast kept popping up asking me to update because engine and virus definitions are old. It is 120226-4, but a new one is 120227-0. I can't update it because it kept initializing. Will have to wait for the tool/program you mentioned above to be out later to fix this issue.

Well in the link I gave Vlk states two options:
1. clean reinstall, uninstall using aswclear.exe which you run from safe mode and reboot then install avast from normal mode.
2. wait for the fix, which hopefully shouldn't be too long.
Depends on how much work/hassle you consider a clean reinstall to be. For me it took a little over 5 minutes, but I'm well prepared and very familiar with clean installs from beta testing.
Personally I would suggest you wait a little longer as it should be less hassle all round and avast is otherwise working for you isn't it ?

Yes, I am aware of this. Hoping the tool/program that will be out anytime will solve the issue or will have to use the first option instead.

If you want to use the first option, just repost and say I will post info, links and steps to follow.

I don't believe so as that would be the same as a clean install, this assumes that this computer hasn't had another AV installed (not just avast) and has been completely removed.

Is there a way to get the "Talk Like A Pirate" Version for my new computer????
I got that version on my old computer and kept it that way because I liked it instead
of going back to the normal version.

Well, that was installed with one of the updates (I don't know how long ago).
It was in honor of "Talk Like A Pirate Day" but I don't know what day that was.

I get the following message when I run the fix program:
Your avast! Installation doesn't seem to have the problem this fix is supposed to solve (code: 11).
What am I suppose to do now????

Well if you don't have the condition that the fix repairs, then you should be able to do a manual update - can you do a manual update ?

I'm going to be setting up my new computer in a few days but I still want updated protection until then.

What happens if you - Try a repair of avast ?
XP - Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
You may need to reboot after the repair.
Report any errors if any when you do the repair.

I'm getting ready to setup my new computer in the next few days but I still need protection
for the moment on this one.
My last definition update was 120226-2 and my program is still at 6.0.1367.

I think you are going to have to do a clean install and may be quicker in the long run.
- if you want to retain avast6 you need to have saved the installation file or get a copy from filehippo.com, use the Mirror site yo download the last version of avast6 as their main site has the wrong link (it is also for avast7).
This is if you want to install avast7:
- Download the latest version of avast, 7.0.1407 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.
- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for 5.x, 6.0.x and 7.0.x). - 1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can't do that, very likely, start from the next step), reboot.
- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 6.x if previously installed and then for 7.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.
- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

It's really strange that I never had a problem with Advast until now. :'(
At least if I do a clean install on the old computer I can see if I have any problems
with Avast 7.
If I do I don't think I will install it on my new computer.

Got Avast 7 up and running. :)
Had to use the Aswclear program route to remove the old Avast.
My brother is paranoid now since Avast had this problem and he isn't
sure if he wants this installed on my new computer.
How luckily is a problem going to happen again????

No one can say or guarantee nothing would ever happen again and that is the same across the board for all AVs at some point in time they all get a bump in the road.
For me in very close to 8 years use of avast, those bumps have been few and far between and some problems simply don't present themselves as not all would be effected.
I have been using Outpost Firewall for even longer than avast and that too has had its fair share of bumps in the road over the years, but I'm still using that too as it is a fine program.
If you jump ship on any security based software after any hiccup you won't stay with one very long and get very familiar with it.

I want to install Avast on my new computer before I hook it up I to an internet connection and want to know if I would have a problem.
The only 2 issues that I see might be not providing scans for emails since an email program is not
installed yet and registering to get a license which you have to be connected to the internet to do.
