Title: IMPORTANT! Fix utility for corrupted avast! v6/v7 installations
Post by: sedina on February 28, 2012, 01:17:49 AM
Hi all,
if you have problems with "hung" updates in your avast! installations, please use this tool:
http://public.avast.com/supp/FixUpdate.exe

For version 7.0.1407
please run FixUpdate.exe, then run VPS update from avast! GUI. You can ignore the question whether you want to run a program update after the repair is done, because there's no further program update available for 7.0.1407 at the moment.

For version 6.0.1367
please run FixUpdate.exe. After a few seconds, you will be asked whether you want to update the program (to version 7). If you choose to update, click "Yes" and wait several minutes for the process to be finished (you can check on the Maintenance / Update page - after the update is done, the page gets updated and says "Current version 7.0.1407", with a note that it's necessary to restart the machine to finish the update); then restart the computer.

The tool is meant to fix a specific problem, in particular the one mentioned e.g. here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=94454.0
If the machine is not affected by this particular problem, the tool will report so (usually with error code 2 or 11) and won't do anything.
If you did not experience any problems updating the virus definitions in the past 24 hours, just ignore this tool - there's no point in running it.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience.

Pavel

Thanks for the update, but before I go ahead, do I click on that FixUPdate.exe and what do I do next? Also, run VPS update? From Avast in Maintenance and click on engine and virus definitions?  I am speaking of version 7.0.1407. I need to be clarify on that. Thank you.

I have a windows 7 with avast pro 7. I ran the tool but it comes up saying I do not have the problem with code 11. But the main UI shows 27-0 update in red. when I try to update it works and says updated to 27-1 but the main UI shows 27-0 in red. Should I uninstall and reinstall?

Just reboot, it should bring them back in synch:
If that doesn't do it - Try a repair of avast:
XP - Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Vista, win7 - Control Panel, Programs & Features, uninstall a program, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

You may need to reboot after the repair.

This has in the past resolved this out of sync issue between reported and actual VPS version.

Thanks DavidR, I did just a reboot and it did not work. I then did a repair and a reboot and now it is showing 27-1 in green, all ok. I have another computer that is already showing 27-1 in green and also ran it on that one to be sure, it also showed the same error but I assumed it was because it did not get the bad file, I can not understand this because I turned them on and off at the same time, got a guess? I guess just do not worry about that one? Thanks for your help slybo

I get the following message when trying to run this fix:
Your avast! Installation doesn't seem to have the problem this fix is
supposed to solve (code:11).
I'm getting ready to setup my new computer in the next few days but I still need protection
for the moment on this one.
My last definition update was 120226-2 and my program is still at 6.0.1367.

I downloaded the patch, and the message says that my system seems to have no problems, so you do not run. Instead nela Avast still does not update the virus definition (the last is the 120226-3), or the program (Avast Pro 6.0.1367) to the new version 7. Also I can not even uninstall it. Thank you for your help. (translated by Google)

I clicked on FixUpdate.exe and it stated that nothing is corrupted, etc. But, the update for engine and virus definitions still do not go pass and it kept initializing since last night. So, what should I or other people who are experiencing this, do? Thanks.

Looks like http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility is the one to do this.

*facepalm*  Same problem as the above several people.  "FixUpdate.exe" reports that nothing needs fixing, but I still can't get updates, and new to me, using the Add/Remove button in the Windows XP "Add/Remove Programs" settings returns an "avast! Setup Fatal Error".  As such, I've sent you an e-mail with the requested files in a ZIP file. (The file is named "JDC_avastVPXes.zip".)  Hopefully, we can get this second snag straightened out!

Count me as another person stuck!

FixUpdate.exe says nothing is wrong Code 11

Avast v6 IS Paid (just rebought 2 weeks ago 2yrs on 3PCs) won't upgrade anything anymore.  No UI update to V7 and no definition update.

About ready to really get upset.  I was staying calm thinking this FixUpdate.exe just had to be the fix for my three machines!  What's the course of action now?  What's the timeframe for a real fix?

EDIT: Add/remove says installation is corrupt for Setup directory.

BTW My Avast IS install is in C:\Program files\Alwil Software\Avast5 if that matters.

Sent along the two files requested earlier in the thread to your email address VLK.

Ok, this is strange. In Program Files, there is no Avast, but Alwil Software, and then inside that, it is Avast5. But, it is Version 7 that was installed , not Version 5. Does Avast5 means Version 5? I used Avast for few years and it was fine until upgraded to V7 and then it has an issue, etc.

Right now, it shows 120226-4 and 7.0.1407.

I can't remove it from Add/Programs because it stated reading product error which shows C:\Program Files\AliwilSoftware\Avast5\Setup\

I guess I would have to uninstall it with aswclear and then install it again with either V6 or V7?

I think I should do this tomorrow as it is a bit late.

Thanks.

@ Joseph Collins, beaker1024
If the fix doesn't work for you, e.g. it is reporting you don't have the problem the fix was for, etc.  You have the Fatal Error relating to avast.setup and a clean reinstall is probably the best/quickest option if you don't want to await the outcome of your email for another fix.

See my post here for more info - http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=94395.msg752978#msg752978 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=94395.msg752978#msg752978).

It isn't strange to have ALWIL Software as the folder, if you updated from avast5 to avast6 that folder name (and sub-folders), etc. would have been retained, the same would be true of the update from avast6 to avast7. If you do a clean reinstall at any point then the folder name would be changed to AVAST Software, etc.

But, yes it looks like a clean reinstall will be required for you with the fatal error.

tried fixupdate.exe here but did but it gave me error code 11, update still stuck at initialization.

i proceeded to try to uninstall via windows uninstaller, Avast! setup produced fatal error (did not save a screenshot of it)

so i went through the following steps after that:
1. Download a fresh Avast! 7 package from http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
2. run Avast! uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (please do it in SAFE MODE!   )
3. reboot to normal windows mode
4. install the fresh package

problem solved.

on a side note, i tried windows uninstaller after that, it did not produced fatal error message anymore.
any idea if the corrupt update will affect Avast! setup/uninstaller?

system specs: Windows 7 32bit sp1 running programmes: kingsoft pc doctor 3.3, comodo firewall 5.9

I believe that I do have the problem that this fix is intended for, but I got Error 11.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.  Avast! version 6.0.1367.  My virus definitions are  120226-4.

Yesterday I received an Avast! pop up saying there was a new version of the program.

I tried to upgrade the program in Avast!  It stalled.

I then rebooted and tried again.  Stalled again.

After that I tried to update my virus definitions... that also Stalled.

To quote VLK:
Quote
"If avast got into the state where it "hangs" when you attempt to invoke an update (either virus definitions or program update) you will have to manually fix it by downloading the program I mentioned.

This happened to people who tried to invoke a PROGRAM update in the last ~12 hours (from within the avast UI).

Thanks
Vlk"

That describes my experience exactly.

I cannot update my virus definitions by using Maintenance in Avast!...hasn't worked since yesterday and seems to exactly fit this thread:

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=94454.45  Topic: Avast corrupted - will not upgrade or uninstall

I just ran FixUdate.exe and received Error 11.

So the FixUpdate didn't work for me, but from what I've read in this thread and the one linked above, I thought that this problem did apply to me.

1. Download a fresh Avast! 7 package from http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download (to reduce chance of corrupted install)
2. uninstalling Avast! the normal way with windows
3. run Avast! uninstall utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (please do it in SAFE MODE!   )
4. run the uninstall utility (2 TIMES) total, one for Avast! 7
5. reboot and go into safe mode once more, second time for Avast! 6 (this is because i noted u have updated to Avast! 7 from Avast! 6)
6. reboot again, this time to normal windows mode
7. install the fresh package
8. please report ur findings here =)

Note: if u receive fatal error through normal uninstall in step 2, skip that step and go to step 3

Koam,

Yes there is.  Instead of downloading ver 7, download ver 6.0.1367 from link below and then follow the instructions for an un-install re-install.  Be sure to run the awsclear utility in safe mode... probably twice, once for ver 6 and once for ver 7 to be sure. Then reboot into normal mode and install ver 6.

Here's a link for ver 6:

http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/11113/ (http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/11113/)

From the linked page above, be sure to click on "FileHippo Mirror" link as the green download error for some reason will give you version 7 and not ver 6 (see image below).  You can verify it's correct by file size, ver 6 is 61.2 meg instead of 71.4 meg.  They're both labeled ver 6, but FileHippo messed up one of the links it seems.

Hope this helps.

Ran the utility. Error code 11 (Doesnt apply to me).

Still my Avast 6 installation would not update.

What to do? Will Avast fix the utility fix or is uninstallation unavoidable?

Try a repair and reboot, if not solved i suggest a clean install using the removal tool and upgrade to version 7.

If you can't fix Avast with the attached utility then you will have to do what I did:
Clean reinstall, uninstall using aswclear.exe which you run from safe mode and reboot then install avast from normal mode.
That's what I was forced to do to get Avast 7 up and running!!!!
See no problems with AVAST 7 so far and I am able to update the definitions.
I had that error code 11 message while trying to run that utility and I couldn't uninstall or repair
Avast in ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS either.
I never had a problem with AVAST before and am a little worried about installing this on my new
computer when it's hooked up because of this.
I wish someone would clarify what exactly caused the initial problem and assure me that something like
this won't happen again!

I never had a problem with AVAST before and am a little worried about installing this on my new
computer when it's hooked up because of this.
I wish someone would clarify what exactly caused the initial problem and assure me that something like
this won't happen again!

Is this the only way to fix this problem or is a fix being worked on? I'd like to avoid doing the clean install if possible.

I have had problems updating in the last 24 hours, and i have downloaded this fix but i got the error sign you mentioned, and it cannot help me :(

thanks for putting the update though  :)

Hi all,
if you have problems with "hung" updates in your avast! installations, please use this tool:
http://public.avast.com/supp/FixUpdate.exe

Pavel

Were you have the associated problems the the tool was supposed to fix? if not the the tool wont do anything and gives the error code 2 or 11, if you have another problem the i suggest a repair and reboot and if that doesn't work a clean install is recommended.

Notes:

1) The new fix is at the same link as the old fix that didn't work.  This is a little unclear.  Just click the same link again and re-download & run it.
2) After it worked, it asked if I wanted to start the program update now.  I answered "NO" because I don't want v7 yet.
3) I then updated Virus Defs and it got 28-1

Thanks.

at NON, Koam: try a complete uninstall

Thanks. I didn't have to do all that.  the new FixUpdate worked for me - very easy.

A few days ago I updated to Avast 7 but had too many problems with it so yesterday went back to Avast 6.
I just ran Fixupdate and it said it didn't need to run (code2).
Can I now just update to Avast 7 from within Avast 6, or would I be better uninstalling 6 and doing a clean install of version 7?
Thanks in advance.

Maybe you should reread the OP by pavels. He mentions about upgrading from 6->7 after applying the fix.
A lot of people were saying that it's better to clean install on going from 6->7 to prevent all the problems reported in the last few days. Is this still the case?
Certainly Avast 7 made my Win XP unusable after updating from within Avast 6 rather than uninstalling 6 and clean installing 7.

Certainly an installation from scratch won't hurt, on contrary.
But, also the upgrading from 6 to 7 is working now.

I guess avast has fixed the issue without having to download the fix???

The tool is the fix, there's no additional download (unless you're on version 6 and choose to update to version 7).

Sorry I'm not being very clear explaining what I meant.

From the first post of this thread:
Quote
Hi all,
if you have problems with "hung" updates in your avast! installations, please use this tool:
http://public.avast.com/supp/FixUpdate.exe

I had a problem where updates "hung" when clicking for updates in the avast program. On two computers.

I downloaded and ran this fix on one of them. It solved the problem.

I downloaded the fix on the other computer.
I double clicked the icon where it had saved to run it.
A box appeared which says "do you want to run this file?" I clicked run.
A very small gray box appeared that said the problem has now been fixed and did I still want to run the fix?
I clicked No.
I opened the avast program screen and clicked to update the program and definintions.
Avast updated as normal.

The first three steps were as normal, (same on both computers) the small gray box, saying that the problem has been fixed and asking if I still wanted to run the update, was only seen on the second computer.

My question is, has avast fixed this issue even for those who have not yet manually ran the fix?
Why did I get a box saying that the issue had been fixed already on the second computer, and not the first computer a few minutes earlier?

This is NOT the box that says about not having error 11.

Both machines were already on Avast 7. This is only about the definition updates that were not working.

So for those asking and still using avast 6, just wait a little longer to update directly to the new program version (that is, once the definitions update problem is corrected in your systems with the use of the special fix tool).

This small box came up straight after I clicked 'Run' on the box that appears when you double click on the downloaded fix.

(I was already on avast 7, and trying to get updates to work. The updating now works, but I clicked "no" to not run the fix.)

Just an addendum because at least to me it was not entirely clear: once you run the Utility there comes up the dialogue with the options yes and no. This is the question for the PROGRAM update. Dont mistake it for immediate update of virusdatabase definitions.

In short: if you want to continue to use version 6 and not update to version 7, click NO in the dialogue. And THEN do a definition update manually.

I think the box I saw was different to this, as when I ran the updatefix I was already using Avast 7, just couldn't get new updates for it.
And the box said something about the problem having been fixed, and did I want to run the fix anyway.

Could it had something to do with it, that I clicked to update Avast in the Avast UI screen, it was stuck at the initializing... point, I closed the UI, then clicked to run the updatefix without cancelling the update attempt before closing the UI?

Has anyone else seen the small dialogue box saying that the issue has been solved already?
(Not the one that says you don't have error 11, the one I saw was different)

The 1st FixUpdate gave me error 11
The 2nd FixUpdate worked for me.
I clicked "NO" in the dialog box that asked if I wanted to proceed with the program update because I don't want v7 until they iron out the problems.

I'm glad I waited for FixUpdate to be updated.

Gosh this was confusing.

I have decided to install Version 7 and now both updates for engine/virus definitions are updated with a latest of 120228-1.

Here's the link to check what is the latest updates for those.

http://www.avast.com/en-us/virus-update-history (Thanks to the person who posted this yesterday)

Other than that, I am happy that it is solved. I have been a customer of free Avast for 2 or 3 years now and really am satisfied with it. I am planning to upgrade it anytime. I know something has happened to it since two days ago, but am glad that everything is alright. Thank you for the aswclear (this is to be saved to use, in case) and to those people who helped out with us on how to fix the issues, etc and also to those people who created/worked on this good and excellent software.

It seems and looks like Avast is no longer on the computer as I uninstalled it with aswclear and other things. I would like to know if version 7 is good to use for now? Or should I use Version 6 for now until later to use Version 7? Thanks.
My 5 computers are running Ver 7 as they should - now. :)
Avast7 looks great, except the auto sandbox. That should not be selected by default.

Downloaded it and it said my installation did not have the problem. Once again I managed to avoid a bad VPS file. I've never been bitten by one yet . ;D

@Dch48,

Same here.

But I have another way other than the way quoted later in the post:

Have your DSL modem go kaput for a couple of days, and you will miss everything.  Nice that I got a better modem than the one I had, and for free, too!

Sometimes it is just luck.

Unbelievable!  I am talking about all of the stuff in the thread above.

I think with the change to cloud hybrid vps computing, there were (and are) going to be some mistakes, some of which is possibly due to some major code re-writing in version 7.0.1407, resulted in increased complexity, and member's reporting and experiences certainly reflect this.  New features are not without risks.  Elsewhere in the forum some were reporting FSS hyperactivity to the point of where their systems were slowed to a crawl.

I've got an idea.

Maybe perhaps some program running on a user's system interferes with proper installation (and everyone's system is different, certainly not running the programs I run) of version 7?  For example, I make it a point to turn off all non-Microsoft programs via msconfig, reboot, and then install the antivirus program.  (For some reason I did not this time, as I upgraded directly to v 7, but normally this is a step I do.)  This way I have got a system that is doing a clean boot with only minimal and essential services running, and no extra startup items running in the background.  Something to maybe keep in mind?   ;D

An antivirus program, no matter who the vendor of choice is, is one of the most critical programs an user can run.

EDIT:  I remember why I did not follow my own advice above.  It was because I was online and downloading the upgrade files for version 7 at the time.  Oops.

Sounds like you would need to do a clean install. I guess if you tried an avast Repair from Programs & Features, Uninstall/Change, you would get a fatal error in avast.setup file not found, etc.

- Download the latest version of avast, 7.0.1407 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe) (or the avastr2beta version) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for 5.x, 6.0.x and 7.0.x).

Unfortunately, while Avast was updating to 7, windows 7 was trying to do an update at the same time.  A FUBAR occurred, and the pc locked up.  I rebooted and got a blank screen when starting win. normally.  So, rebooted into safe mode, and went to an earlier restore.  This did not fix Avast as it will not repair and I cannot uninstall or remove it or install a new Avast either.   Any way to remove and reinstall?
Thanks for any info.

System restore in itself can screw up an avast installation.

A clean reinstall as outlined will remove it:
- Download the latest version of avast, 7.0.1426 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe (http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn't save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

- Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for 5.x, 6.0.x and 7.0.x).
This relates to avast free, but you don't say what avast version you are using, free/pro/AIS ?

I have a difficult-to-fix corrupted install on a Vista 64 laptop.

Looks like I'm a little late in the curve for the corrupted virus update to be the cause, probably happened on a free Avast v. 7 install on Sunday 3/11.  May have been a conflict with a new printer driver configuration.  I really don't have a lot of time on the PC to do forensics before it heats up and crashes, time after time.

Reading all the posts, and trying various things, I'm convinced I need to run aswClear.exe from Safe Mode to remove the corrupted install.  Nothing else has been effective so far.  However, I can't seem to get the program to run.  I get an error message that it is not a valid Win 32 application.

Dialog with Red X in a circle:  C:\(path)\aswclear.exe is not a valid Win32 application.  (OK)

I've tried every way I can think of, from a Windows file manager window, from a "Run" window, even a DOS prompt, always the same error, Safe Mode or not.  Since my time is limited on the target PC, I've also tried it on this XP laptop (no Avast install here to remove--would abort if I got it to run) with the same results.

Looking at the properties of the file on this PC, it is listed as "aswclear.exe", it is recognized as an Application by the OS, 113KB (116,573 bytes), taking up 116KB on the disk.  One intriguing thing, there is a radio button to "Unblock" the file below the file info, since "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer."  I've never run into this sort of Windows .exe file protection before, perhaps it is designed to block just this sort of low-level file execution.  I'll try this next and report back.  Then there's compatibility mode on the next tab--that shouldn't be an issue.

Filed a ticket with tech support last night, but no response so far.  Don't expect a lot with a free product.

This is incredibly frustrating.  My main PC is junk until I get this resolved, and for no good reason that I can find, the perfect little fix program won't run.  Please advise if anyone else has had trouble running this file, or if I'm missing something really simple.

Thanks.
Title: Re: IMPORTANT! Fix utility for corrupted avast! v6/v7 installations
Post by: Jeff Zerr on March 13, 2012, 09:18:46 PM
Reporting back:

I still get the same error in Safe Mode (on this XP PC, not the target PC), "aswClear.exe is not a valid Win32 application."  I expect the result to be the same on the Vista PC, but it is much more difficult, time consuming, etc. to try.

The Unblock file attribute in XP seems to be a flag whether to confirm file execution with a dialog showing security certificate, file origin, etc., or execute the file without the confirmation step.

Any help would be appreciated.   :)

Jeff

113KB?
The file downloadable from the web (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) has 320KB... so maybe it's just truncated?

Interesting, now we're getting somewhere.

I see 317KB (you say 320KB) when I follow your link, but when I download the file, I get a file only 120KB on my disk.

A quick check of two previous downloads shows the 113KB I previously reported, and then a version only 103KB on my desktop.  No wonder the file doesn't run.

Igor, are you willing to send the file as an attachment to an email?  You should be able to click on the icon at left for my address.

Thanks.   :D

This has something to do with downloads from the link on the Avast page using the old copy of IE7 on my XP machine.  I tried the same download of the file using a likewise very old version of Firefox, and the byte count came out right.  Don't know how to do a CRC using Windows utilities, but I'm sure this will do the trick.

Same thing with an attempt to download the latest Avast! free release--whatever it can download in 1 second is all I get, about 100kb.  Doing it through CNET Download works, however.  Interesting.

Maybe I should install the AV software, pronto!

Thanks, all.   ;D

Have you tried with another browser?

Robin Keir published some nice small utilities for free.  The information I posted was from his Hash program http://keir.net/hash.html (http://keir.net/hash.html).  I also like his IP2 program which shows your external Internet IP as well as your machine's internal NAT IP, particularly nice for those with routers.  http://keir.net/ip2.html (http://keir.net/ip2.html)

Hello tere5,

That is not a bug, avast definition update was occured during scanning and old definitions were deleted.
Don't worry about it.

And, if you have another question, please start a new topic.

Hi Angel

Download the aswClear utility to your desktop http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe

Uninstall Avast from add/remove
If it is not there then go to safe mode
Run aswClear for all versions (4,5,6, and 7 ) one after the other and then reboot

Then download a fresh copy of V7 to your desktop  http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe

Uninstall the other AV
Reboot
Reinstall Avast
