Title: Error: cannot connect to server for updates
Post by: Warhead on December 08, 2004, 10:01:53 PM
Have had Avast for many months and it has been excellent.
Yesterday during the normal update straight after start up I got an error message that Avast cannot connect to  the server for updates. Have tried reinstall but still getting same message.
Any help appreciated. ???

Is your firewall blocking it?

Have you tried Manuel update? (right click avast "a" ball in the task bar and select update then iavs/Program update)

Using Sp2 firewall and have Avast as an exception so I dont think its that.
Tried manual updates and updates from Control panel - still same error message.
it just doesnt love me anymore :((

Well the windows firewall couldn't block it as it only blocks incoming.

Could you try repairing avast please, Contorl panel>Add or remove programs> avast>change/remove>repair

What version of avast are you using btw?

Check your proxy settings. Set them to "do not use proxy" and try again.

But, Pivot, did you try to solve the timeout / non-connection troubles?
Which is your OS? Firewall? Proxy filter?
To help you we must more information about your system...  ;)

OK - just checked proxy settings. Get an error message no matter what i select. Cannot connect.
Not sure what to try next.
Is there specific info Technical need? Do you want logs or  anything like that?
I could email my error log when I test the proxy settings. It's all too complex for me to understand.
 :o
Thx for continued efforts guys - appreciate it.

Same problem here. What's goin on? No problem until this month. Tried uninstalling and installing 4.5. Still the same.  ??? ??? Tot it might have been the registration overdue. Re-registered, got another serial but still the same.  :-\ Can't manual update but I can GO

a (right click) > program settings > update basic > update now

Weird.

Do you have set your system to "use no proxy"?
Have you checked your firewall?
If you have ZA remove it and try again, if this is working reinstall ZA and set the apropiate permissions.

Can you ping the update servers/

Open a DOS window and type:

ping download7.avast.com

What do you get?

When you can't update, believe us, the problem is on your side most of the time.
Firewall or Proxy settings...  :P

Exact same problem.   Sounds like it MIGHT REALLY BE the server side.
My ping worked.
No recent changes to avast or system.  Always worked in the past but now cannnot connect to server to get updates.

Thanks

Right now... ping worked...
I'm really sure the problem is not on the server side.
It's your firewall, your proxy settings into avast or anything else in your ISP.

Just two seconds behind:

Information about current update:
Total time: 6 s

- Program: Already up to date
  (current version 4.5.549)
- Vps: Already up to date
  (current version 0450-1)

Server: download14.avast.com (69.93.98.186)
Downloaded files: 3 (0,03 KB)

Can you test pinging this other server?

ping download14.avast.com worked fine   35 ms

Still can't get download to connect.  I'll try more stuff tonight.

Thanks

I have had exactly the same problem for (I would say) the past two weeks. Error message:

Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Cannot connect to download10.avast.com (207.44.182.35:80).

Total time: 36 s

As far as I am aware, the only thing that has changed on my PC as regards Avast! is the last programme update. It does appear that I can manually update which is adequate but a nuisance after a long period of reliable automatic updating.

Just tried to ping both avast servers form dos comand. Got same error message each time:

ping transmit failed, error code 65 (shows that 4 times as it sent 4 packets - all lost)

Hello,

Sorry I posted the same post in a new post.

I have the same problem.
I can ping the server.
But still getting 'cannot connect to the server' when trying to update.
The 'repair' worked on my notebook and my avast works fine  but not on my desktop.
Same OS, same applications...

OK - last chance slaloon I think. Another uninstall and reinstall. Ran scan from boot this time (do not do this usually) but still same error: cannot connect to server. cannot ping the Avast servers form dos either. Cannot update manually like the others have said. Have restored IE to default settigns. Also have Mozilla Firefox. Never had a problem until now though.
So here is my error log. Reveal anything? Again, thx for any ideas.

@Warhead
if you are not able to ping from DOS, then I think it might be a different problem.

Could you ping the IP adress directly:
i.e.: download10.avast.com has IP 207.44.182.35

This above adress is working fine for me just now.

Try a tracert from DOS - my ISP had a few days ago a loop in his routing tables which caused some problems.

If You are able to ping directly the IP adress, then the chance is good that there is a DNS or Gateway problem at Your ISP

If You don't reach it from DOS - hopefully Your firewall is allowing the ping command - then no chance to reach it from an application.

Peter

Okay, my daughter called me yesterday with the same problem.  Been running avast w/ zonealarm with no problems, I have the same setup and I am still able to login to the update server.  Tried shutting down zonealarm, still unable to update.  She has e-mailed her error log to me which am forwarding to you.   Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.  This is by far the best anti-virus program out there!

Remove ZA and try again. It is a known problem that when shutting down ZA it sometimes still blocks connections.

WOOHOO! Thx Eddy that link to the error code 65 page on Microsoft did the trick!
I had an old ZA install lying dormant and had forgotten about it. Found it and uninstalled and straight away Avast (and MSN Messenger which would not log me in!) was back with that lovely wee robot voice saying database has been updated!!!
Thx to everyone who gave advice and help. Nice to have the best Antivirus software back in full force again!
THX ALL!

Don't forget to install ZA (latest version) again or another firewall. You still need a firewall for security. ;)

Hello
I too have problems that generate the same error logs as above. I can however ping the download server (both with name and IP). I have tried to change proxy settings, but no luck. I am using IE no problems.

I am confident the problem is in my end, but cannot understand what it is. My father has recently installed wireless network, and I am helping him set the computer up. I am running Kerio Firewall as well. Any ideas?

I might add that it can ping when not using the port 80. Adding ':80' to the IP result in no ping...

You can't ping a specified port.
At least You know now that the update server is reachable from your computer.

Following all the threads here about not reaching the update server it's mostly a problem with the firewall.
Try to disable it and if this does not help deinstall it completly - of course install it afterwards new to be protected.

Hi!

I have the same problem as all the above: since I have updated to Avast! 4 Home build 4.5.523 (VPS 02.12.2004 0449-1) I can no longer get new updates of the program (get message "Cannot connect to server") while I still get all the virus updates fine. I have tried both automatic and manual program updates without success. I have not changed my firewall configuration (which allows aswupdsv.exe and avast.setup outgoing TCP connections) which used to  work prior to the last program update. Still I have tried putting the firewall (Kerio 2.15) to learning mode (ask for incoming and outgoing connexions) to see if other items of Avast would ask for permission but it didn't change a thing. My license is still valid by the way. I'm running under Windows XP sp1 and I do not use resident protection for Avast and no Windows firewall activated. Also I do not use a proxy.
If anyone could help soon, I'd be more than grateful like all those who have the same problem.
Thanks.

Download and install the latest version from the website.

Does this solves the problem?

Same here.  Been about two-weeks now without updates. I've tried re-installing, disabling Zone Alarm.  Just about to throw in the towel. A shame, too -- Avast!  has always been top-dog in my books.

Hi,

It seems that this problem is hitting many without any solution.
Is the Avast product owner aware of this problem?

Most people who are facing this either have wrong proxy settings, wrong firewall setup, firewall mal function (ZA), or are using an old version of Avast.

qcbloke,
with ZA it is not enough to just disable it for checking, you need to remove it completly to find out if ZA it the problem or not.

I have the same problem too. I didn't changed anything on my PC recently and I don't use any firewall. Everything else works fine: this is evidently an AVAST latest version bug

Make sure you have set "use no proxy" in your connection settings.

And not using a firewall is not smart to do. I strongly suggest you get one.

Also try this:
start > control panel > add/remove programs > Avast > change/repair > check for updates.

Eddy, I feel your frustration.

However, I have downloaded and installed the latest version of Avast, have the correct proxy setting, and excised my trusty ZA -- apparently not the problem so I've re-installed.

This Avast connection snafu began spontaneously two weeks ago during a period when no changes had been made to my PC. Also, during the six-months prior I'd been using Avast , the app had performed and updated without incident. Two + two?

Hi,

I had this problem on my both computers (which have the same internet connection).

It is not about zone larm;

Problem solved in the following way:

On my notebook, I had to do a repair.
Control panel - add remove program - repair avast once you click on removing it

On my desktop, I had to uninstalled, reboot, reinstalled and do a repair.

Since today morning, it seems that it is updating well.

 ???
Afraid I've got the same basic problem as everyone else.  Can't be sure when, but it seems about the time I updated the main program to 4.5 a few days back that the error message "cannot connect to server" first started appearing.  I've always been able since then to manually update.
Before registering with this forum, I did an uninstall and a reinstall, updated (manually) to 4.5 and updated the latest definitions 0451 (rebooting as appropriate).
I have McAfee firewall and had no problems before.  Among other progs, McAfee is letting ashserv.exe and ashmaisv.exe access the internet.  I've disabled the firewall and still no joy.  I've tried autodetect and no proxy, all to no avail.  I've tried the repair facility but it tells me it cannot connect to the server at the Downloads window.

I don't particularly wish to remove the firewall, reboot and then try again, which seems to me the last resort, since all else I've tried - and have seen posted here hasn't helped.

There appears to be a genuine problem, with the finger of suspicion pointing at Firewalls in general; so how's about Alwil software investigating a little further before we lay ourselves open by removing (albeit temporarily) our firewalls.

System is Athlon XP running windows XP home.

Regards
Dave

Hi, again,

There is really something weird.
I am having again the same problem on my desktop: cannot connect to server... but it is working fine (till now) on my notebook.
I have the same OS and applications!!

But the systems are not the same. Different hardware, different drivers and therefor Windows is not behaving the same on both systems.

Not saying this is where the problem is, but it can have something to do with it.

That was a vps update, not a program update.

Hi there!

It seems like AVAST 4.5.523 didn't like the automatic detection of proxy (automatic detection - use IE settings) as advised in the Help file. I've changed it to Direct connection (no proxy) and was able to connect to the server to download the new AVAST program update at last! :))

One thing bugs me though: I used to have this option (automatic detection) checked and it'd work fine for program updates (I still use the same IAP and no proxy). Besides I haven't changed my IE settings since I do no use IE (I use Mozilla Firefox) and have denied it access. Why did Automatic detection still work fine for VPS and not for program updates? Some food for thought for AVAST developers I guess!

Hope this post helps some of you.  ;)

 ;D ??? ::)
Do I look confused?
So I've got auto updates back - I think.  I re-read the FAQ that comes with the main help file and it referred to a file Avast.setup requiring access through the firewall.
Now I had checked ALL blocked applications and there were NONE.  Let's face it .SETUP as an extension is not the same as .EXE and at first it wasn't listed.  I couldn't even find the file on the system to startwith but reverted to a DOS box and the good old DIR command and found it skulking in the AVAST4 Setup folder.  Back to McAfee Firewall Internet Apps screen and strangely AVAST.setup was shown as BLOCKED (I know it wasn't there a few minutes earlier - I'm losing it, I know).  Allowed Full Access and hey presto.  Now for the really strange bit. Avast.setup has disappeared from the file listing again.

Is it me???

avast.setup is not a permanent file it is created just before update, so that is probably why you can't find it to allow it.

Try a manual update and your firewall may ask if avast.setup can access the Internet, say YES. If it doesn't and you can't connect, your firewall/you have already blocked it; so look in your blocked items/programs area and delete it if it's in there. Then try the manual update again.
