Title: I got it too.... Alureon-K...
Post by: FallenAnjel on March 25, 2012, 04:46:26 PM
I've got most of it gone, except the "partition"  I got to the aprt where Avast tells me to run a bootscan upon restart. It did that, then gives me a few options such as

Restart Normally
Diagnostic Mode

and a few others.  Right now I'm doing what I can via LogMeIn, since it's the work computer that is infected.   I saw lots of great instructions by Essexboy and will follow what I can, unless someone wants me to do something specific.  I'm hoping the boss will drop the computer off to me so I can work on it continuously.  He's the type that will say, "Oh just leave it, work on it next week".....   yet seeing as he destroyed it to begin with (looking at YOU-KNOW-WHAT), he'll expect me to just wave my magic wand and fix it.   :-\

sorry for the rant.   So my quesiton is, which option should I choose after the bootscan? (or is that part of the virus?)

If you have "lost" your icons and folders then do not empty any temporary folders

Follow the destructions here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

RogueKiller should restore the vast majority of icons and kill the malware
aswMBR will determine which type of MBR infection you have, as there are several variants out there and each needs to be approached differently

Thanks Essex! Will do and post back what I find.

Ok, so I had to install Malwarebytes on my thumbdrive because I can't get it to install on the infected computer.  I can run it fine from my thumbdrive on my laptop, but not the infected computer.    I did scan w/ Avast yesterday and seemed to have deleted everything but the Alureon.

Should I just continue on w/ the rest of the instructions ?

Just an FYI, the infected computer is a Dell GX270 running Windows XP SP3.  32 bit.

Continue with aswMBR and OTL

I will do a rough and ready clean then we will use Rogue killer to get the icons back

Ok, attached are the OTL files and the aswMBR Files.   Thanks for everything.   Can't believe I might actaully get this cleaned up.  :)

OK lets hit the partition first whilst I look at the OTL log

Copy aswMBR to your root C drive i.e. C:\aswMBR.exe

Go start > Run and copy/paste the following command :

aswMBR.exe -ap 1

Press OK

Reboot as soon as it has completed.

If aswMBR should fail for some reason then :

Download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here (http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop.

A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste its contents on your next reply.

I am signing off now so I thought I would post the next task before I go

OK lets get the rest now, once this has run can you let me know what problems remain

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

If you have Malwarebytes 1.6 or better installed please disable it for the duration of this run

Run OTL

Thanks for the second reply.

I copied the aswMBR into the C:Drive like you said, but the computer "couldn't find" the file when I typed in what you said to type in.  I DID run it by double clicking it, so if that helps, I've attached the file to this post.

I'm also going to now run the TDSS Killer and do that now, then rerun the OTL...

So I did all that and attached are the MBR, TDSS and OTL files.

So I still have no icons, IDK if doing all this is supposed to bring them back yet or it will still be a while. Things are slowly reappearing,  I am mainly missing the program file icons in Start, but I can get to all the "stock" items :My computer, network, run, control panel.  The prgrams are still listed in control panel, but no icons, so I know everything is still in the computer.

Thanks again for all your help.  :)

Re-run TDSSKiller and when this item is presented select delete :

\Device\Harddisk0\DR0 ( TDSS File System )

It looks as though at some stage a temp cleaner has been run.  Did you use Combofix earlier ?

If so we may be able to recover them from there

Yes, I did try to run Combofix in the very beginning. It was one of the programs on my thumb drive.  I say "tried" becuase as far as I knew it didn't run.  PC Doctor DID work but I had to pay to get rid of everything (except the AlureonK wasn't in the list so it would have been wasted money..thank goodness I told the boss to hold off).   Then I ran Avast, and that helped the best.

I will re-run TDSS Killer and delete that file.   Then I will post my log.

I ran TDSS Killer again and didnt' see where to delete that file.  Attached is my log and two pictures of what I saw when I scanned.

Here's the links for the pics since they're too big to attach:

OK thats gone - weird but thats computers for you.  How is the computer now ?

OK lets try and locate the backups of all the shortcuts that are missing

Run OTL quick scan with the following custom script

C:\Qoobox /s

yes, computers are strange....

On the strange note, I had been getting some icons back here and there during this whole process, but noticed a lot are missing again.  for instance, My Documents is empty again.      I still have most of the Start Menu tho, thank goodness.  I wasnt' even able to use "Run" until yesterday.

Attached is the log file of the OTL scan w/ the "C:\Qoobox /s" command.

In the words of the immoral bard "bugger it"  combofix emptied the temp files but failed to save them

However, there is always a way around this

Restore Accessories Program Files Menu

Please download this tool here (http://www.winxptutor.com/download/accrestore.zip).

You will need to unzip the tool first.

Once you've unzipped the tool, please double-click on it to run it.

Ensure that the following check boxes are checked (as seen in this image below):

Once they are, click on the Restore button.

Restore Admin Tools Program Files Menu

Please download this tool here (http://www.winxptutor.com/download/admintools.zip).

You will need to unzip the tool first.

Once you've unzipped the tool, please double-click on it to run it.

Click on the Restore Administrative Tools Items button.

As seen in this image below:

This next one will produce the necessary shortcut links which you can cut and paste into the start menu folder
Download the repair.vbs (https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=32d8666f4048075b&sc=documents&uc=1&id=32D8666F4048075B%21117#) file to your destop
Run the repair.vbs
It will ask for a folder name call it recovery
The tool will let you know when it is finished
On the desktop will be a recovery folder
Open the folder
Cut and Paste the links that you want to C:\documents and settings\your name\start menu

I assume it's ok to continue to run all this via my thumbdrive correct?   Even if I could hook up the internet to it, my son is playing Xbox and it's keeping him out of my hair while I'm doing this. ;-)

I've been using my thumbdrive all along, surprisingly it never got infected.  (nor has my laptop)

Is the computer clean now?

Yep it looks clean - it is now just damage repair time

Could you confirm that the net and windows updates work at some stage

And copying from a usb drive is not a problem  ;D

No rush  ;D

Well, actually..........   ;)

I got the following messages when I ran the restore tools, but I can't find anything that was "restored".  Is that what the VBS script is for?

http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/4852/photomar2653138pm.jpg

Except when I ran the VBS Script I got the following error:

I realize you're in bed now (I think I read you're in England?), but I just realized something.   If you notice the pic of the error, the drive letter is "I".  That's my thumbdrive.  Since the computer is clean, I will hook up to the internet, and d/l the script onto the computer and run it from there.  (Same with the other two programs).

I wonder if it's trying to work on the thumb drive because that's where it's installed....

I'll post back w/ my results.

Ok, little change of plans.  I connected back to the internet.  Just for grins and giggles, I ran Avast full scan again.  It found ? instances of the Alureon-K virus.  I was able to successfully able to delete them.  It asked to do a rootkit scan upon restarting.  I did that.

I tried to run a program called, "Unhide".  That didn't work.  Didn't "unhide" anything.

I then starting putzing around, and remembered about hiding/unhiding files.   So I went into My Documents and My PIctures and found that all the files were hidden.  I unhid them and !Viola! All back.     I couldn't remember how to unhide files on the C Drive.  Did a google search, and found it. (My Computer, Tools,. View).  Checked "Unhide" or whatever it was and another !Viola! Moment... EVERY SINGLE ICON IS BACK.   All programs, everything.  The only thing I can see that is gone right now are the homepages in Explorer, but the bookmarks and everyhting are there.

There are a few glitches that I haven't figured out how to solve yet.   One is, every time I open up something on the desktop, the icons disappear, I then have to right click the bottom toolbar and chose "show Desktop".  I'm sure there's a fix for it, just haven't figured it out yet.

I'll prob. run antoher scan of Avast and maybe WMSRT again.

Essex, thanks so much for all your help! Guys like you are invaluable.  I can only hope one day to be doing what you're doing.   (I do a little bit, and normally can fix viruses, but this one was a nasty one, but now I have the tools to do it).

Now, if I can only get Windows Safari to stop refreshing on my Acer Laptop I'll be ok!  (That's like a carpenter living in a run down shack, lol)

I'm still trying to work on keeping the desktop icons visible, but here is a video I took of it happening.   I've also run HiJack this and I've attached the log, as I don't ALWAYS know what to look for.

Ooops, forgot to post link to video:

Excuse the sloppiness, I took it w/ the iPHone.

Continue with aswMBR and OTL

I will do a rough and ready clean then we will use Rogue killer to get the icons back

I just remembered about this, I rean RK, the hide desktop icons thing showed in the log, and I deleted everything.

Icons still disappear whenever I do something.

The boss is picking up the computer in a few minutes.  I will only be able to work via LogMeIn after that.  IDK why he needs it, he used his laptop on Sunday.

Attached is my RK report.  I already used the "Delete" function.  Icons are still disappearing.   UGH!  :(

When all else fails....

RESTART THE COMPUTER!

Yeah, the icons are staying now.  You know, when you are working on a computer for three days, sometimes you JUST FORGET to restart the computer, LOL....

Now the ONLY thing I'm stuck with is the error returned while accessing the msconfig utility.

An Access Denied error was returned w hile attempting to change a service.  You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes

The computer is back at work now, and told the boss to call em when he's done w/ his banking online so I can log in via LogMeIn and see how it's working there.

My brain hurts, lol.

OK looks like a permissions error, RK was showing some bad MD5 signatures, so I would like you to run Combofix. After we have reset the damage.
Do you still have the icons disappearing problem ?

So lets get the toolbox out  ;D

Download  Windows Repair (all in one)  from this site (http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windows_repair_all_in_one.html)

Install the programme then run (in this case you may skip steps 2 and 3 but allow the restore point and ERUNT to be set)

Go to step 2 and allow it to run Disc check
(http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Capture3.gif)

Once that is done then go to step 3 and allow it to run SFC
(http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Capture.gif)

On the start repairs tab select advanced mode and click start
(http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Capture1.gif)

Leave the preselected ticks  and tick restart system when finished
(http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/Capture2.gif)

After the reboot

Delete the current copy of Combofix from the desktop

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1  (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here  (http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.html&pid=494216#entry494216)

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3.  If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Well, the computer is back at work, so I prob. won't be doing that last bit of instructions.  Would be nice if I could.  Maybe this weekend, but I doubt it.    As far as the boss is concerned,  it works and that's good enough.  (He's old school anyway).

Thanks so much for all your help and I will def. keep this post in mind if I ever get to work on the computer more.  :)
