Title: I need help removing consrv.dll infection on 64 bit Windows 7. Logs Attached.
Post by: Dark_Matter on March 28, 2012, 06:11:54 PM
I recently became infected with consrv.dll. It removed security center (defender and firewall). I could not utilize any of my restore points to recover. AVG detected and removed consrv but then the computer would only boot to a blue screen with stop: C0000135. This was remedied with the known registry fix that changed conserv.dll back to winsrv.dll using recovery console.

Steps that were taken once I booted to the desktop:

1. AVG was removed
2. Used TDSKiller
3. Ran Kapersky Virus Removal Tool
4. Ran Combofix with reboot
5. Used Rkill(s)
6. Then ran Combofix again with reboot

Result was that some of the bad behaviors were gone but the registry entry in “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems\ still reverts back to loading consrv rather than winsrv and I assume the virus still persists. I need help removing it.

Thanks!
Rocky

Hi there delete the current copy of combofix that you have and download/transfer to the infected system a fresh copy. Meanwhile I will look at Farbar and see what repairs I need to do

 Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1  (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link 2 (http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here  (http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_your_Security_Programs_t96260.html&pid=494216#entry494216)

1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
Quote
File::
C:\Windows\SysNative\MobilePreInstallerService.dll

NetSvc::
sfilter

Driver::
sfilter

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif)

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exeWhen finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3.  If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

I ran aswMBR with avast definitions and I still had these infected files:

File: C:\Windows\system32\consrv.dll  **INFECTED** Win32:Sirefef-HO [Rtk]
File: C:\Windows\system32\crauto.dll  **INFECTED** Win64:ZAccess-E [Rtk]
File: C:\Windows\system32\lxrjd31s.dll  **INFECTED** Win64:ZAccess-E [Rtk]
File: C:\Windows\system32\MobilePreInstallerService.dll  **INFECTED** Win64:ZAccess-E [Rtk]
File: C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_32\Desktop.ini  **INFECTED** Win32:Sirefef-FQ [Drp]
File: C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_64\Desktop.ini  **INFECTED** Win32:Sirefef-HO [Rtk]

They were cleaned. (before and after log is attached)

I ran combofix and it looks clean (attached) and then ran OTL which looks ok too (attached)

As a follow up I did a scan with Kapersky Virus Removal Tool which came back clean as well.

I am going to restore security center and enable defender and adaware.

aswMBr will clear that infection if you press Fix, also Avast V7 is now able to remove them once alerted to the sequence

So after combofix cleaned them with the script they returned, is that correct ?

I ran aswMBR right after our last step in which you said to let you know if anything was remaining. So they did return after the script. So I did go ahead and fix it with aswMBR. I rebooted and re ran aswMBR - all clean. I ran a combofix and OTL and all were clean. Then I ran the latest Avast! and did a boot scan and there were some residuals but I don't know if they're related. (See logs attached) They were removed. At this point I have enabled defender with latest definitions and scanned, enabled adaware, updated Java and Adobe PDF software and my computer seems to be working fine. Oh, and in addition I created a small junk file to block c:\windows\system64 and also a junk file in place of consrv.dll so thay can't write themselves to those locations anymore.

It was just that aswMBR found a third file that was not evident on any of the prior scans, so I wonder if they are protecting the protection service

C:\Windows\system32\crauto.dll  this one

Glad to see that aswMBR is on the ball though

It looks like the others are Java stuff and quarantined files

Is all OK now ?

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Remove ComboFix

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
(http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/javaicon.gif)
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

 Upgrading Java:
SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point
Now we can purge the infected ones
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php).  Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker (http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/) and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit
To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ? (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/225044-preventing-malware-and-safe-computing/)

Keep safe

Thank you for getting me through this. It was tougher bug than usual and I appreciate all of your expertise and professionalism. I performed all the cleanup and got tha java up to date. I'll be watching things closely for a while and report back if anything doesn't look right or my scans aren't clean. As of right now I've had a few days of completely normal performance thanks to your help!
