I received this message when trying to uninstall Avast 6
Error reading product data from C:\Program Files\Avast Software\Avast\setup\part-setup_ais-557.vpx.setup cannot continue
I can not restore my computer to an earlier time either, because it tells me that an anti virus program is preventing it.
Avast is telling me to fix the software..........but it won't let me fix it.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you cannot uninstall avast download this uninstall tool and boot into safe mode than run the uninstaller tool http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
-
WHEN WILL AVAST FIX THIS?
am interested to know if they are actually acknowledging that so many many people are getting avast 6 NOT WORKING and not uninstalling, and some possible issues , serious ones, occurring due to it.

Where be these masses you speak of?

womble, I suggest an installation from scratch:
1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. (Optional) If you want, save your avast! settings for later restoration (Settings > Maintenance > Back up).
4. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
5. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1 in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml). Boot after you've run it. Repeat this for any major avast! version you have ever installed/upgraded in your computer.
6. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
7. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro. Or even upgrade (http://www.avast.com/resend-license-paid.php) your key from old versions.
8. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

Try getting into safe mode via msconfig>>http://netsecurity.about.com/cs/windowsxp/qt/aaqt_safemode.htm (page down once for the info I am speaking of)

If you can not go into safe mode through F8, take a look at this :
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/force-windows-to-boot-into-safe-mode-without-using-the-f8-key/

Yes, there might be slight differences in the appearance of msconfig but is virtually the same from memory, haven't used xp in quite a while ;)
I believe the link Gargamel360 posted is specifically for xp but iroc9555's link give an easy to understand picture

Thanks Craigb for backing me up. Mayor thunderstorm. Have to log off.

I also tried the uninstall tool and that did not work either.
did you run it from safe mode ...as the instructions on website say ?

The antivirus was norton and no I didnt uninstall it first. After I did though I re-installed the avast and still nothing. I cannot download the uninstall tool that was provided. It gives me an error message

I cannot download the uninstall tool that was provided.
you mean this http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
what error do you get?
you need to uninstall Norton and run Norton removal tool to be sure all leftover files that may conflict are gone
run and reboot http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/
running multiple AV will make your computer slower / mysterious windows errors / false positive detections .....etc etc
-
ummm... it says the avast self protection module is enabled. For this reason the operation cannot be completed.

when downloading ?.....or when running?
do you run it from safe mode ?
-
It goes through the download and it says scanning then the error message comes up. I just ran the Norton removal too and rebootedl. And it still won't let me do it.
-
you still have not told me if you run it in safe mode or not ?
do you know what safe mode is ?

Yes, does seem the OP almost needs to start again from scratch (clearing everything with removal tools in 'SAFE MODE'. Could have corrupted Avast install due to originally installing with another security program installed. :-\
Then do Clean Install of Avast Set up. ;) :)

I am having the same problem with Avast. It is X'ed out down by my clock after I clicked on an Avast update reminder and I tried to uninstall.. I got an error message as well. I tried to install over it and it would not work either. So I called Avast help line and they tell me it is a malicious attack, but I had trouble understanding the tech since his accent was so strong. I did however understand him to say it would cost $99 dollars for them to remove it remotely. Or $150 if I take it to a computer repair shop. If I had this kind of money I would not be choosing to use a FREE anti-virus. Software!! Can anyone help me please?
Thanks, kdsgrammy
PS I was also told by the tech that if I try to use another anti- virus program it could crash my computer.

Download and save the version of avast that you want and the removal tool http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility, reboot into safe mode and run the tool then reboot back to normal mode and install the saved copy of avast.

I forgot to mention the tech directed me to the event viewer on my computer that had a lot of errors and warnings omn there. How do I get rid of those?

They clear themselves out in time but to keep your system clean you can install CCLeaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds choose the slim build as it doesn't include the Google Toolbar.

I did what you told me to and I fixed the problem so I thank you very much!! Now I am wondering why when I called Avast they just didn't tell me this instead of wanting to charge me $99 and fix it remotely. I mean upon using your instructions I fixed it without any problem, they should have told me this, don't you think?

Your welcome :)
Who was it exactly that you spoke too? as it sounds like you may have called avasts old tech support service provider ( iyogi ) which is not used anymore for sometime.
-
I called the toll free number found on the avast web site for Avast tech support The man's name was Charlie and he had an East Indian sounding accent. He also told me that when I called back to make sure and ask for him, to me, that sounded suspicious.

Hi,
I have avast installed on an Acer Windows Home Server.
After licence is expired I can not deinstall avast.
Also the unsinstall programm does not help.
the uninstall programm shows following message:
The avast! self protection module is enabled. For this reason, the operation cannot be completed.
To complete the operation, either run this program from Windows Safe Mode, or disable the avast! self protection (via Settings -> Troubleshooting page).
Now my next questions are:
- How can I disable self protection if the setting is not shown in windows home console (screen keeps white)
- How can I run WHS in Windows Safe Mode?
Many thanks in advance.
I want first to uninstall the avast programm because my WHS gets very slow the last month.
So I want to check is it the avast or the whs before I buy a new licence.
many thanks in advance for your help and
best regards
john

you dont have to disable selfprotect if you run it from safe mode
save the uninstaller at your desktop, then start macine in safe mode and run it from there
do you know how to start in safe mode?

Hi, my avast also won't work and can't uninstall. I tried running the uninstall utility in safe mode but it wouldn't uninstall it and I got the error messages: 'DllRegisterServer returned 0x80070005' and 'Uninstall service error 0x000000005'. Is there any way around that or can I uninstall avast a different way?

This is just a +1 to say that this problem persists. Here's my experience:
Avast! prompted me to upgrade from 8.0.1497 to 2014.9.0.2006. The upgrade seemed to run normally, but I noticed an error from a CMD window when the system was shutting down. After that I could not boot normally -- boots took 10 minutes and no programs would launch. I couldn't get Avast! to run at all -- it showed an RPC error each time. I was unable to repair or uninstall it. I rolled back to the restore point that the upgrade had set and was able to boot normally. Avast! still wouldn't run or uninstall, but I was able to launch a browser and download the avastclear program.
The rest of the process ran as expected (boot to safe mode, run avastclear, reinstall Avast!). Unfortunately, since Avast! wouldn't run I couldn't back up my settings first.
That's two hours I'll never get back.
This happened on a Windows 7 Professional 64-bit laptop, SP 1.
