You have run Combofix at some stage and the AV is alerting on a service that failed to complete the cleaning

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

If you have Malwarebytes 1.6 or better installed please disable it for the duration of this run
To disable MBAM
Open the scanner and select the protection tab
Remove the tick from "Start with Windows"
Reboot and then run OTL
(http://i1224.photobucket.com/albums/ee362/Essexboy3/mbamstop.jpg)

Run OTL

How is the computer behaving now ?  I see that you have both CA and Avast.  I would recommend uninstalling one of them

Thus far I haven't seen any problems other than the Windows Installer popping up during the start up process.  I've also noticed that I'm not able to go into Stand By or Hibernate after running that last fix.  I'm also only using Avast, so I'm guessing that some components of CA may still be on this laptop, which is something I don't want.

Run the CA uninstall tool from here http://cainternetsecurity.net/KB/KD.aspx?KDId=644

When windows installer pops up what programme does it reference ?

I launched that link, but when I click on the CA Uninstaller it takes me to Remote Assistance and I don't know if I should go that route.  Would you recommend it?

The pop up I get happens during the start up of Windows and it's basically just a small window that reads "Windows Installer.......Preparing To Install.."

Download the windows uninstaller utility to clear the initial popup http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459

For CA if you could run a fresh OTL log I will remove it manually for you

I downloaded the Windows Uninstaller Utility and afterwards it seemed to have brought back the issues with the trojan virus.  I did have some errors while running the Uninstaller and they are as follows:

Error 1500, Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installations before continuing this one.

(I ended processes dealing with CA through the Task Manager "Processes Tab" [Anything with the letters Umx and also Msiexec)

User 'SYSTEM' has previously initiated an install for product 'CA Personal Firewall.' That user will need to run that install again before they can use that product. Your current install will now continue.

Error 1704, An installation for CA Personal Firewall is currently suspended. You must undo the changes made by that installation to continue. Do you want to undo those changes?

(I responded with Yes)

After doing this the virus pop-ups once again started up and my firewall again became de-activated.  I decided to run MicrosoftFixIt again to correct the issue with the firewall, but I later also ran system restore to yesterday's date and it seems everything is back to normal.  I ran a Quick Scan through OTL and the info is down below.  I really appreciate all the help.

Run MSICU again and delete anything associated with CA.  As you can see it is still running a lot of files.  You may need the MSFixit again for the firewall

How would I go about deleting everything associated with CA using MSICU?  I ask because of the errors it gave me last time I ran it and also because it doesn't give me a list of what I can delete.  The firewall issue has been corrected, so that's fine now.  Can I run the OTL custom fix that you posted above first?

Yes - create a restore point first and then run the OTL fix

Could you run this MSFixit as it is the latest version of the cleanup utility  ( I have never had need to try this version)

CA seems to be history, only run the fixit if you still get windows installer popping up

How is the computer behaving now ?

Everything seems to be running perfectly now and that also includes no Windows Installer pop-up.  THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

I usually run a Boot Time Scan on a daily basis, so can I start doing that again?  I also wanted to mention that I will continue recommending Avast! to everyone I know.  Thanks again!

To be honest I can see no real need for a bootscan on a daily basis, I do one once or twice a year just for the fun of it

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTLRun OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change thatNow that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

(http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/7729/mbamicontw5.gif) Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php).

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker (http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/) and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide  How did I get infected in the first place ? I ran that last fix and I also checked the "Hidden Files and Folders Section" and they're already set to be hidden.  The reason I do a Boot-Time Scan over a regular scan is because I've had the understanding that it's more of a deep rooted scan, so I would assume that's better to use.  I also don't mind waiting a bit longer for it to run it's process.  Would you not recommend doing this?

I will also come back within 24 hours if I notice any kinds of issues.  Again I want to say thank you!  All of you take time out of your day to help people out on here, so it should be recognized.

Boot-Time scan is a specialized tool to remove infections before they have time to run making it easier to remove them. Also it should be ran when Avast! itself ask you to do so ( When Avast! detects suspicious programs that can not be completely remove after a regular scan ) or when it is suspected that your comp has a virus that the regular scans can not detect.

Remember that Avast! is continuously scanning any file you, the system, or by itself run in your comp making a daily scan unnecessary. Myself I run a quick scan weekly and a full scan every month or so.

Once the boot time scan has finished running, you've scanned as many files as are possible.

As already stated, any files added, changed or accessed, are automatically scanned by avast!.
Why would you repeat scanning something that has already been confirmed as clean ???
Once the boot time scan has confirmed your system as clean, additional scans are really not needed. IMHO.

I finally got around to doing a new scan and it still picked up an infection in the form of umxattachment.exe (win32 downloader nzi trojan).  However the laptop seems to be running quite smoothly, so what would you recommend from here, Essex?

What is the location of umxattachment.exe and is Avast not deleting it ?

We all get busy, so no worries.  I wasn't able to copy and paste the exact location of the virus, so I just did a print screen of the location instead.  You can find it in the attachment.

OK that is within the Computerr Associates firewall installation package

Now I can delete the entire MSI package but it means that you will not be able to uninstall CA firewall

Do you wish me to do that ?

@essexboy,
Can he uninstall CA first, then have you do the fix and he can then do a fresh install if CA ???
That way CA can still be uninstalled at a later time ???

Yes, but after running another scan it once again found an infection, so I decided to completely disable System Restore so it would eliminate all restore points.  From there I ran another scan and it didn't find any infections.  I'll let you know how everything is running within the next couple of days.
