Post by: reinhardholzner on April 20, 2012, 07:26:45 PM
Hi all,

for those that have concerns about permission usage of avast! Mobile Security and avast! Anti-Theft, we've now prepared a knowledge base article describing what we use the permissions for. I hope this helps all customers. If you have any questions feel free to post them here.

https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB66#idt_320

best regards

Hi i just bought a xperia ray phone which has android 4.0 (ICS). but when i try to activate gps it ask to have rooted device  :(. My phone is not rooted due to warranty issues. Is there anyway to activate gps without rooting my phone.

macAFee mobile security has this feature to get gps information from non-rooted phone.

Is this possible??

Hi,

you need root only to remote enable the GPS if it is disabled. If you have GPS enabled by default, you don't need root to receive coordinates from it using Anti-Theft.

But some time phone can lost while GPS is inactive. Therefore my opinion is to have this remotely too. By the way to activate GPS from the remote location why it need super user permission. I don't know, but i think its good when avast launching the internet controls, give a update to the client too.(by fixing the root permission on GPS activation)

Hi,

if it would be possible without root, it would have been done like that already. We tried to do it, but didn't come up with a solution. If you know an app that can provide firewall without root or activate GPS on all devices without root, give us a heads up and we will take a look at it.

Hi,
Bought me recently an Archos A70H2, Google play tells me my tablet is not compatible.  Will Avast! mobile security will be available for this device recently or do I have to install an other product?  :'(

Rik

This is my first post on this forum, ans clearly not posted at the right place, how do I move?

sorry and thanks
Rik

Hi,

can't move it, sorry, but can give you a reply - if Google Play doesn't let you install the app (don't know why), you can try it from different stores - for example Opera Apps.

I understand what you say regarding the necessity of permissions.  But it's still troubling to know that if you (Avast) wanted to you could read every text message I've ever sent (and by the terms of the installation agreement I would have no legal privacy protection since I gave you "permission" do to so).  As I said, I understand your reasoning for why this permission may be necessary, but it's awefully ironic that installing security/privacy protection software like Avast  requires one to compromise the very privacy they are trying to protect!

Hi,

that is how Android is designed, unfortunately :( We can't do anything about that.

Well, everything depends on what avast! do with the content of your messages which is nothing. You can trust your security vendor or you can't install a security program. Like Filip said, the Android architecture requires that.

Hi Filip, the problem is back, as the link leads to an empty FAQ.
I'd suggest to either update the FAQ or unsticky this thread.

Hi,

I'm not a mod anymore so can't really help you with that :(

Filip

Edit: To be clear, I'm kind of a half mod here, I can remove posts for example (I think), but can't edit them.

Hmm, I don't see a complete breakdown of what all the permissions are used for.
Perhaps the link is down again?
I get directed to a generalized FAQ page that mentions a couple of permissions and why they are required  but not all.
I already understand what most of the permissions are used for except Bluetooth Admin.
What is this used for in the Avast app?

Hi, please set up a separate thread for this and specify there how exactly you "can't get it on your phone" (unable to download, install or run?).
