Title: Avast Free Problems
Post by: MoBee on May 13, 2012, 06:07:19 PM
 :(
First Post:
I had no problem downloading the new file, installed fine all seemed to be happy.  I then attempted to use my computer and it would boot up, then start to slow way down and then freeze because of over usage of resources.  Uninstall avast and it runs fine, though it is without protection.  Ideas?  Avast did update the same day that Windows sent out 40 plus security fixes, maybe Windows removed or moved a file you all "anchor" to?

Reply, yes everything was tried as requested, but still does not work:
I suggest an installation from scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
3. (Optional) If you want, save your avast! settings for later restoration (Settings > Maintenance > Back up).
4. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
5. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1 in Safe Mode. Boot after you've run it. Repeat this for any major avast! version you have ever installed/upgraded in your computer.
6. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
7. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro. Or even upgrade your key from old versions.
8. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

Then computer specs were requested:

At first: remove Microsoft Security Essentials. Never use 2 AV programs at one time! This causes conflicts. Then try a fresh install of avast as suggested.

Been there, done that.

After uninstalling MSE, did you restart Windows?  Visit http://blogs.msdn.com/b/securitytipstalk/archive/2010/10/29/how-to-uninstall-microsoft-security-essentials.aspx (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/securitytipstalk/archive/2010/10/29/how-to-uninstall-microsoft-security-essentials.aspx) and follow directions.  Microsoft has an uninstall tool.  http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9748340 (http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9748340)

After each run of Avast Uninstall Utility in Safe Mode, did you restart Windows each time?  Doing so will assure that they are able to complete their job.  Only after doing so, then attempt the reinstall of Avast 7.  When it installs, restart Windows again.
