Title: Question for the Experts. Avast and LAN drivers.
Post by: Gooob on May 21, 2012, 01:09:37 AM
Is it advised to re-install Avast (AIS or AAV) after updating LAN drivers?

The reason I ask.
In order to provide complete protection many firewalls and antivirus real time modules "hook" into the network connection in order to insure it's integrity and catch threats.
So if someone goes and updates their LAN drivers, are they somehow breaking those hooks?
Or are they possibly leaving the firewall or AV looking to hooks that no longer exist?

Just curious...

Hi Gooob  :)

Good question. If I am not mistaken, I would just check your connection properties,
and see if within the list of protocols, your firewall driver is listed
within the connection properties. I do not think the updated LAN drivers
would break any hooks within the connection.

If you are running Windows 7, click the network icon in the systray, right
click your connection, and choose "Status". Then click "properties" button
and there should be a list of protocols and items your connection is using.
Within that list, your firewall drivers should be present.

For instance, I use Private firewall from Privacy ware, and within my connection
properties, listed items show the Privacy ware firewall driver. As far as antivirus
is concerned, Avast! web shield would be monitoring traffic via port 80, etc., and the firewall
driver of AIS or whatever firewall should be part of the connection properties listed.

I am far from an 'expert', but I hope this helps in some way, just my thoughts on your question.

All my best!
Jim
