Title: Your system is not protected - Unsecured - cant fix :(
Post by: lightning33 on May 25, 2012, 01:53:15 PM
Hi there,

I have installed Avast Free antivirus onto my computer today, but cannot get it to work properly :(

Avast has the status: UNSECURED
It says I need to click the 'fix now' button, which does nothing. I see there is a 'connect' link, which when I click, it asks me for my username and password. I input the email and password I use on the avast.com site, then it says 'Thank you for setting up your account' and will allow me to go to my avast account, which seems in order.
The problem is that nothing changes on avast on the computer. It is still unsecured.
All of the realtime shields are off, if I click 'start', I get the message: Unable to start the file system shield! Shield unreachable

Under the registration area in avast, the status is: Registered
Current registration will expire on: 1012/06/24
The date of registration is: 2012/05/25

The problem seems to be the days remaining is: 0
Underneath the days remaining is a button to register, but I dont need to do that because I already have, and the status is 'registered'

Under the settings, updates tab, the connection setting is on auto detect.
Under the cloud services, the connection is established, the Reputation services is enabled, and Streaming updates is enabled.

Under the virus definitions, Current version is Unknown, Release date is Unknown.
Program version is 7.0.1426

This is a windows XP computer

I keep going round in circles, clicking the 'connect' button, putting in the account details and clicking 'connect to account', getting the message saying 'thank you for setting up your avast account', then nothing.

What am I doing wrong?
I have also downloaded aswclear from avast, run it, and done a new download, re-install etc, and still I have the same problem.

Any help will be very much appreciated

Thanks

try running avast repair and reboot

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

did that change anything ?

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, I did as you suggested, I got a green check / tick after doing the repair. I have rebooted the computer, but there is no change.

Its as if its not keeping my account settings and connecting it online. I cant seem to get it to connect.
I have gone into the settings, into the update tab, and checked the 'my computer is always connected to the internet' option, and also chosen 'direct connection' under the proxy settings, but this does not make a difference. What is odd, is if I make these changes, then immediately go back into the settings -> update tab, the changes do not reflect.

I think the main problem is that I cannot connect to avast.com with avast on my pc :(

Any more suggestions? I cant keep my pc unsecured for much longer and I dont want to change anti virus programs, but unless I can get this fixed, I might have to :(

You dont need the avast account connected for your system to be secure,as long as you have the secured green tick your fine. Avast account is mainly more suited for those that wish to monitor there security statis online ( suited more for monitoring multiple avast installs )

lightning33, the better would be an installation from scratch (and before, remove all leftovers of old antivirus).

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. (Optional) If you want, save your avast! settings for later restoration (Settings > Maintenance > Back up).
4. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
5. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1 in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml). Boot after you've run it. Repeat this for any major avast! version you have ever installed/upgraded in your computer.
6. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
7. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro. Or even upgrade (http://www.avast.com/resend-license-paid.php) your key from old versions.
8. Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.

Hey
No luck, I have tried a few different combinations in safe mode and normal mode, re-downloaded the uninstall utility and the latest avast version, still have exactly the same problem  :(

Even also tried an old version 5 of avast I have, but that did not work

What was your previous AV and how did you remove it ? any other security installed ? did you run the legitimate uninstall tool to delet remnants ? several removal tools here http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/ if you haven't previously run them following with a reboot.
