Title: adobe flash player update question.
Post by: Arnold72 on June 14, 2012, 11:36:19 PM
hi
I recently performed a scan with secunia software inspector and it recommended an update for adobe flash player (IE)64bit.
Now i currently do not use IE and never will but seeing as it on my system i decided to download this update.
First of all when i went to run the downloaded file it came up as an unidentified publisher.i as a rule will not install any software that is unidentified.
Any flash update ive done before always came from adobe systems.
I decided not to install it.
Is this usual practice for adobe updates to come  down as unidentified via PSI?
Kind regards.

Well the Flash has an automatic update already so no reason to look for them through Secunia or even FF. Myself I like to read the forums and always someone comes up with " Flash has a new version " so I uninstall the old one with Flash uninstall tool and download the new one using the link I gave you. Yes I know. A little old fashion and bothersome, but the only way I know what I got in my comp.

The flash player settings manager is now located in control panel. Update options are located in the advanced tab.

You  have to use IE as it is part of Windows!

Windows Explorer is a file manager application that is included with releases of the Microsoft Windows operating system from Windows 95 onwards. It provides a graphical user interface for accessing the file systems. It is also the component of the operating system that presents many user interface items on the monitor such as the taskbar and desktop. Controlling the computer is possible without Windows Explorer running (for example, the File | Run command in Task Manager on NT-derived versions of Windows will function without it, as will commands typed in a command prompt window). Located in the C:\Windows directory, it is sometimes referred to as the Windows shell, explorer.exe, or simply “Explorer”.

hi
well i dont have to use internet explorer,
I went into the windows features and unticked internet explorer.im not sure if that was a healthy decision but i dont use it so i unticked it.
Also online armor has it set to block at start up.i dont see the logic in it starting when i start windows up unless it affects the running of windows of course.
Regards.

The flash update has nothing to do with explorer.
You need it if you're using Internet Explorer.

You need the flash player update for all browsers not just IE; so if you are using a different browser you will also need the update for that browser. As in the alternates link that iroc9555 provided in Reply #1.

@David

Just pointing out that IE and explorer are two different programs.

Actually Adobe Flash is in two editions, one for IE and one for everything else. If you don't use IE, then it's better not to have any IE Adobe Flash installed at all.

Well, it's needed for displaying the avast! stats.

Just so you know, a lot of people had issues with the last 11.3 version of Flash
and garbled audio. I have since reverted to the last 11.2 version which does work ok.
Problem existed in all browsers IE8 .. Firefox 13 and Opera 12 .. I think it has to do
with the new "sandbox" feature of Flash, which I don't really think is needed.

I choose to have Flash notify me when an update is available rather than letting it update automatically which could occur at an inconvenient time. I just go to their download center and get the update and I never worry about uninstalling the old one for two reasons. There are never more than the latest and the most recent version present on my system ( any others seem to get automatically removed) and the older one being there poses no risk since it's not being used any more.
