Avast high bandwith at times.
« on: July 06, 2012, 12:03:25 AM »
Hi, I been using avast for quite a while now. (years)
But its the first time i actually see avast using quite some bandwidth going from none to the high 9MB(megabyte) or more.
What is avast using all this bandwidth for?

The image might be dutch, but i am sure most can decode it without to much trouble.

This was just from 20 minutes tops.

Unfortunately you don't fully understand how avast works.

The avastSvc.exe is the main avast service, it controls the various avast shields and crucially the localhost proxy for the web shield. All http traffic is routed through the web shield proxy, so it isn't actually avastSvc.exe that is initiating this bandwidth.

You should notice that your firefox bandwidth is considerably reduced also, you, via firefox want to browse the internet and that http traffic is routed through the proxy and comes back in through the proxy (so the content can be scanned) and then to your browser cache so it can be displayed in your browser.

Doesn't 630MB seem a "bit" excessive for doing almost nothing on the web?
I check my e-mail saw 2 e-mails and that's it. I am not running any p2p or background programs that you didn't already see.

I doubt that's 630MB of data.

Well avast doesn't initiate the connection, it just routes http traffic through the proxy. Your browser isn't the only thing that would be routed through the proxy any other application using http, some do their updates too using http connections.

I can't comment on what is excessive or not for your system I don't know what is running that may use http connections.

You can use the reverse logic, don't you think that 2.69MB total download for firefox is extremely low.  Unfortunately the netgear genie traffic analysis simply isn't detailed enough.

I found the solution for this problem.
My bandwidth went down drastically

Wrote a rather big post but then got the error "HTTP Error 504 Gateway timeout". probable a time out or whatever.

Weird - The gateway timeout whilst it may try again, I wouldn't have thought even a very large post would account for a substantial increase.

I have seen gateway timeouts on occasion on the forums, usually due to heavy load on the forum server, but I usually just use the Go Back key and try again after a while or copy the post to notepad and close the page.

That said I rarely if ever check my bandwidth usage as I don't use a huge amount and my monthly allocation is 10GB, 650MB would still a big chunk of that.

I too rarely check my bandwidth usage, Cause i use ALLOT 10GB a night is mostly the lowest i get.
But i am aware of that. Anyways I got it solved so I am fine now.
