Avast Virus Definition Update
« on: September 18, 2012, 03:04:13 PM »
Is it possible to schedule this at a specific time during the day? I've looked around and not been able to find such a setting. Currently I have it set to "Automatic Update" which seems to activate every time I start up my PC and it severely impacts startup time and my ability to do anything else at the same time.  Thanks

You can always set avast to load after other processes but the updates are only in Kb's so this shouldn't slow down your system for to long if any - settings/troubleshooting

Thanks I will try that setting.  The update process impacts my PC for up to 5-8 minutes after startup (until the pop-up saying definitions have been updated) and makes any other work impractical.

No, there isn't such a setting.
Although if you search the forum you'll find the way to delay the first update after boot changing a setting of avast5.ini file.

Edit: Sorry, I've took too much time to click post  :-[

I rather doubt the delay avast services will make any difference as the delay is fractions of a second as it only waits for other 'system services.'

If the above doesn't resolve it then:
Delay Auto Update - In avast7 you need to edit (using notepad) avast5.ini the [InetWD] section of the, C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\avast5.ini.  Win7, Vista location, this folder may be hidden. - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\avast5.ini (XP file location)

- Broadband connections, add this line:
AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120 and
AssumeAlwaysConnected=1 if not present (or edit AssumeAlwaysConnected=0 to AssumeAlwaysConnected=1)
Quote
[InetWD]
AssumeAlwaysConnected=1
AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120
When complete save the changes, avast's self-defence module will ask for confirmation, etc. answer Yes.

You may want to extend that duration further given what you said, try setting it to 300 (5 minutes).

Under normal circumstances this update check and any download as required shouldn't slow things much, it would depend on A) what you allow to run on startup, B) Your connection method, presumed broadband for the above and B) your system spec, e.g. OS, RAM, CPU ?
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free  24.8.6127 (build 24.8.9372.862) UI 1.0.814/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Thanks, that really makes it clear. I'm going to set it to 10mins. initially.

My PC is relatively old: Windows XP (SP3),  Celeron 2.20Ghz, 512Mb Ram. FIOS Internet connection
