Email problem - Fixed
« on: February 13, 2005, 07:37:26 PM »
Hello

I installed avast home edition (4.5.561) yesterday on a  Win 200o Pro box.  All service packs etc are up to date.

Problem is it won't scan my e-mail - I use outlook express - build 6.00.2800.1123

I have read all topics in tis forum , repaired the build , even uninstalled and re-installed , but it won't scan e-mail.
I checked headers in email to verify this - also it is not inserting clean message.

No other anti virus installed - nothing in registry from previous anti virus , no firewall installed (I use a firewall/ router) , nothing taking over the ports - Avast is correctly installing itself on ports  12025 , 12110 , 12143.
The ashMaiSv service is running , and is set to start manually .....

Any ideas where to look next ??

Thanks
Gary

Do you connect to a mailserver that looks something like "mail.myisp.com"?

Is OE set up to connect to your mail server on port 110?

Are you using any spam filter or mail washer type programs?

Does your firewall/router have outbound program/process checking?
If so ensure that ashMaiSv.exe has internet access permission.
I would have thought that ashMaiSv should start automatically with avast if you have it enabled.

Sorry but I'm French.
I have the latest version of Avast!4 and I have entered my 2 accounts in Outlook Express ( server pop.free.fr ).
When I receive my messages, avast scans them and insert a message in the header of each one.

Is your protection activated : right click on the icon in the systray, then resident protection settings and e-mail.

Click on personnalise and look at the differents options.

I hope it can help you

Thanks to all that ave replied so far.

Answers to the Q's:

Q.  Do you connect to a mailserver that looks something like "mail.myisp.com"?

>> Yes  incoming.verizon.net    pop3 on port 110
outgoing.verizon.net  smtp on port 25

Q. Is OE set up to connect to your mail server on port 110?
>> Yes

Q. Are you using any spam filter or mail washer type programs?
>> No

Q. Does your firewall/router have outbound program/process checking?
>> No it checks by port and protocol - Mail is working fine - just not being checked by avast. Firewall is a Fortigate 50A  - It also does virus scan - so Avast is second layer of protection - (always a good idea)

Q. If so ensure that ashMaiSv.exe has internet access permission.
>> Firewall logs are not indicating problems.  Mail works fine - just not being scanned - Note the inbox is scanned when i access a msg - by the standard shield task - internet mail task indicates 0 scanned , and no insert of clean message is the symptom

Q. I would have thought that ashMaiSv should start automatically with avast if you have it enabled.
>> It does - The manual comment is relative to another thread - it starts as a service manually - not sure what starts it , but it is definately in the task list

Q. Is your protection activated : right click on the icon in the systray, then resident protection settings and e-mail.

>> Yes - for incoming , on POP3 , IMAP ,  - also set to insert not into clean message - but no luck ;-(

Q. Click on personnalise and look at the differents options.

>> Done - also set for insert into clean msg oQn SMTP - if i send a message to myself - no luck on incoming or outgoing

Any other thoughts ???

Thanks Again

Look to the log file C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\DATA\log\aswMaiSv.log, if there is the word "Error" somewhere in it.

Look to the log file C:\Program Files\ALWIL Software\Avast4\DATA\log\aswMaiSv.log, if there is the word "Error" somewhere in it.

Here is the contents of the logfile .  I set log=20 in ini file

As you can see - no errors

Thanks
for help
