Still have virus?
« on: February 22, 2013, 05:38:39 PM »
Hello. I appreciate that this forum is so well-run and that you are willing to help.

Logs are attached. One note - OTL did not give me an "extras" log - following the screenshot in the instructions, I checked "None" in Extra Registry, not sure if that's why there was no extras log.

Chronology over a few weeks:
- avast! started giving me pop-ups of "Malicious URL Blocked" even though my browser was on safe sites
- full-scan said virus found:   Threat: BV:Agent-ABR [Trj]. Tried to move to chest: "Error: Access is denied (5)
- boot scan said virus found: Threat: Java:CVE-2010-0840-BH [Expl]. Succesfully moved to chest.
- next day, full scan said same virus found, could not move to chest
- next day, full scan said same virus found, could not move to chest
- next day, full scan said no virus found

I belive I still have a virus...

Thanks in advance for your help!!!!!

Hi could you attach a screen shot of the Avast alert as there will be more data there

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

FYI, I have not received the "Malicious URL Blocked" message in a while (at least not since doing the boot scan)

I would like you to run for a day or so to ensure it has gone, I believe it to be the ads causing the problem

OTL quickscan after fix log attached.

OK. I am going away for the weekend, so I will run it next Mon and Tues (and maybe Sun night) and post again on the result, hoping it is indeed gone!

Do I have to worry:

- that my personal information was compromised?
- that I passed it on to someone else?

I am very grateful for your help, thanks!

No as Avast stopped anything from downloading from that site

An avast! full scan yesterday said some files couldn't be scanned, but today's scan said "no virus found." Looks like it's gone.

Not sure what

@Alternate Data Stream - 168 bytes -> C:\Users\Mark\Documents\SRI World Group W9 form.jpeg:3or4kl4x13tuuug3Byamue2s4b

indicates - the virus was in a file in the C drive? (so the virus was in a file received, not from surfing to a corrupted site?)

What an ADS is, is a little fork in a programme (or an appended addition) which can get the file to do something not normally expected.  It is very hard to find an easy explanation of ADS but have a look here http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/definition/alternate-data-stream

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Clear Restore Points

Go Start > All Programmes > Accessories > System tools
Right click Disc Cleanup and select run as administrator
Select More Options tab
Press Sytem Restore and Shadow Copies Cleanup button

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport
