Need help removing Trojans & other malware
« on: March 12, 2013, 08:53:54 PM »
After doing a boot scan due to constant threat alerts, 7 Trojans/Malware were found:

BV:Malware-gen
Win32:LockScreen-HP[Trj]
Win32:InstallBrain-AB[PUP]
Win32:Sirefef-PL[Rtk]
Win32:Malware-gen
Win32:Malware-gen
Win32:Patched-AKC[Trj]

I selected "delete" for all of them, so some of them may have been removed. Although, a few of them were unable to be deleted.

The 2 Trojans/Malware that are constantly showing up in scans now are:

Win32:Sirefef-PL[Rtk]    in c:\windows\assembly\gac_32\desktop.ini
and
Win32:Patched-AKC[Trj]   in c:\windows\system32\services.exe

I'm now getting alerts for 3 ongoing specific blocked threats, titled as:

Win32:ZAccess-PB[Trj]
and
Win32:Malware-gen
and
Win32:Trojan-gen

Which constantly appear in sets of 5/5 pop up alerts.

From your "Logs to assist in cleaning malware" thread. I completed the first 4 steps and saved all 5 logs.

Since one of the Malware threats is entitled Sirefif, I also made a 6th log using farbar service scanner. I've attached 4 of the 6 logs to this post. I'll attach the final 2 to a second post.

In accordance with Avast options. I first tried to "Repair", which I believe would be the same as 'Clean'. After that failed on each one, I attempted to "Move to Chest"; which I believe would be equal to 'Quarantine'. After both of those failed. I chose the "delete - all" option from the boot scan menu. I don't seem to have any added problems with my PC after doing this. Everything still seems the same as before.

Thank you for sending me that link. I didn't realize how dangerous it can be to 'Delete' alerted files, especially without knowing what the file specifically is. Hopefully nothing will go wrong in future from me doing this. For now on I'll check with an expert, before attempting to delete any further files in the windows section.

[Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.
THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.[/b]
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

3.  If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Hello, I ran the OTL fix as instructed. Then I went to run combofix, but I messed up and mistakenly clicked the mouse while it was running, causing it to stall. I then rebooted my PC to fix the problem.

I planed to run combofix again due to making it stall before, but I then noticed the note to not "re-run" it; and rather ask for further instructions if a problem occurs. What should I do at this point?

I disabled all antivirus software, then ran ComboFix. After the initial ComboFix start-up, I was prompted that I still had Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live! and AntiVir Desktop running. I previously followed the instructions for shutting down Avast, although I did notice that 2 Avast processes were still running when I checked task manager\processes. So in processes in stopped the 2 Avast functions, then clicked "ok". After clicking 'ok', I was again prompted that all the same processes were still running, and that I should continue at my own risk. I'm not sure what else I could have done to disable the antivirus functions from both Avast and Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live!, so I first uninstalled Lavasoft Ad-Watch Live! and then continued on, knowing that I had manually stopped all processes from Avast, and everything seemed to go well.

Right now my PC appears to be running as normal. I did an Avast scan before posting this message, shortly after doing a windows update. Then 12 new rootkit high risk threats were found(I'm unsure if they're related to the update or not), which I've never seen before in prior scans. However, all the Trojan alert pop-ups seemed to have stopped for the time being, and the original trojans appear to be gone from my machine according to the scan. Avast is recommending that I do a boot scan to remove the 12 new rootkit threats; but since they're all found in the windows directory, I wanted to ask what i should do first?

8 of the threats are:

C:\Windows\winsxs\...\ntoskrnl.exe     Severity: High    Threat:Rootkit:hidden file

2 of the threats are:

C:\Windows\winsxs\..\System.Windows.Forms.dll      Severity: High    Threat:Rootkit:hidden file

and the last 2 are:

C:\Windows\winsxs\...\System.Design.dll        Severity: High    Threat:Rootkit:hidden file

What would be your suggested action for these threats? Would removing them through a boot scan be recommended?

I've also included the log from ComboFix, from the previous removals.

You can ignore those as they are windows updates, Avast was suspicious of the behaviour is all

Could you play around with the computer and let me know if all is working well

Subject to no further problems   :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Remove ComboFix
  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the "x" and "/")
    then click OK

  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled
Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Clear Restore Points

Go Start > All Programmes > Accessories > System tools
Right click Disc Cleanup and select run as administrator
Select More Options tab
Press Sytem Restore and Shadow Copies Cleanup button

In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport
