Disabling Auto updates but it still is running
« on: March 20, 2005, 06:17:26 AM »
I was wondering, is it possible to turn the Auto updating off completely?

Since I like to manually download the updates, I selected to turn off the Auto update feature, but I see that it is still running when I view the Task Manager.

Is it safe to shut this service off in Windows XP?

Thanks

Hello.  You asked if it's possible to turn off Auto-Update, but in the next
paragraph you said that you indeed did turn it off.  Do you still need
help?   -Bert

I have shut the Auto Updates off from my options within the Avast program.....

However, even though the auto updates are shut off ... when I run the Windows Task Manager, it shows this running all the time:
"aswUpdSv.exe"
I use Windows XP Home Ed. and within the "Services" management, there is the option of shutting this off.

I have not messed with this yet for fear of disabling or goofing up my virus protection.

I just hate things running that are not needed.

Thank you and sorry that I didn't explain this in more detail before.

I believe when you disable from within the settings, there is no need
to do anything else but restart your computer and the Auto Update
will be disabled.  I did this earlier this evening in an attempt to fix
another problem and the Auto Update task manager did not reload
upon restart.  -bert

I've had the auto updates turned off for quite a few days now and my computer is shut off every night but that darn, "aswUpdSv.exe". is on all the time regardless.

Maybe this is just an isolated incident and I am the only person that has had this happen.

At first I was thinking that the "aswUpdSv.exe" needed to be running even for manual updates to work - now I'm not sure what to think.  ???

Anyone else out there having this little problem with the "aswUpdSv.exe"?

I do not know for sure but i believe "aswUpdSv.exe" is needed to run updates manually and therefore will run when windows is started.  I only think this because when avast tries to update it is "avast.setup" that executes or runs when updating is invoked either manually or automatically.
As i said I do not know this for certain but maybe someone with a bit more knowledge than me can help you out.

Cheers

aswUpdSv.exe is always running like a Service in XP.
It could be 'used' by manual and automatic updates but, it could be used by scheduled updates in Pro version.
Maybe if more than one updated started at the same time, the process remains running and does not close (stop) well at shutdown.
Just a guess, of course I'm not sure...

OK you guys... I finally got brave enough to disable the auto updates in the Win XP services panel.
Here are the properties for it:

avast! iAVS4 Control Service

Service name: aswUpdSV
Path to executable:
"C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe"
Provides automatic updating for the avast! antivirus.
Disabled and stopped.
No dependencies were listed

So far so good.
I was able to manually download the updates afterwards.

I'm sorry for being such a wimp.
It is just because I am usually the first one on the block to get a virus.

Thanks for your replies.

Nothing wimpish about taking care with services, for the future if you need to or are contemplating a similar move. You can Stop a service and then set it to 'manual' rather than 'disabled' that way if a required service is needed it can start manually.
