Is it recommended that I check the box next to PUP?

Lets put it this way, are you prepared for any such PUP detection.

Do you know what is installed on your system and what it does and if that may be considered a PUP.

PUP = Potentially Unwanted Program - See http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid14_gci1066761,00.html. Not included in this definition are tools which can be used for good or evil, some have been legitimately installed for a specifically good purpose, but could have been unknowing installed for a malicious purpose.

Not all antivirus programs scan for PUPs and avast has it turned off by default (an exception being the boot-time scan).
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD - 27" external monitor 1440p 2560x1440 resolution - avast! free  24.9.6130 (build 24.9.9452.762) UI 1.0.818/ Firefox, uBlock Origin Lite, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Since I know NOTHING about computers, I think I would have to take your answer as no don't check the box.....lol.
Another question, my husband was doing a search and avast came up with a warning for that site. I did a full scan and it found win 32 backdoor ABW trj. I sent it to the virus chest. I'm still trying to figure Avast out since I've never had it before, was this the right thing to do and should I be concerned over the find?
Thank you for your reply

You're welcome.

Generally the avast default settings provide a good balance between protection and performance.

They also try not to have the user involved in too many decisions, when PUP scanning is enabled this is more likely to happen (not directly). Avast would still seek to have the Shield settings Action set to Move to chest.

However, in the on-demand scan the detections would be listed at the end of the scan and this is where the user may decide to change the action from Move to chest to another action. This is where the problem lies to be able to make that decision an informed decision needs to be made and you need the knowledge on the file/program being detected to make that decision. This is I believe why avast doesn't enable scanning for PUPs by default (other than the boot-time scan previously mentioned).

EDIT: Re action taken on detection.
You have done the right thing, 'first do no harm' don't delete, send virus to the chest and investigate.
Deletion isn't really a good first option (you have none left), 'first do no harm' don't delete, send virus to the chest (a protected area) and investigate.

There is no rush to delete anything from the chest, a protected area where it can do no harm. Anything that you send to the chest you should leave there for a few weeks. If after that time you have suffered no adverse effects from moving these to the chest, scan them again (inside the chest) and if they are still detected as viruses, delete them.
