unsatisfied with support!
« on: October 23, 2013, 12:47:53 AM »
Last night I called the support line. Was put on hold for 45 minutes. When connected gave the agent all the information. Version of Avast Pro I have, the billing number, email, name and phone number. He found all the information and asked for my street address.

I then told him the problem. I had loaded Windows 8.1 and my version of Avast did not work now. He asked to take over the computer to fix the problem..gave him permission.

Show him where the license was on the desktop. He then fumbled around for a few minutes. He then asked when I had had the computer checked for viruses, told him less than a month ago. (this seemed odd since Avast was checking and working). Told him again that it only stopped two days ago.

He then started to go into the back end kept saying that the computer had many problems. (at this point I thought I knew what was coming a sales pitch) He proceeded to bring up updates that he thought had not been loaded automatically. (they had been and I pointed this out to him)

Then we went to another area. He point out things he thought was wrong. They may been but they were a month old.

He then pointed out two pieces of software that he thought could be causing the problem. One had had been sitting there for two years and was not activated. The other piece of software was running he claimed needed to be removed by an expert. ( I deleted the software in two minutes)

He claimed that two virus programs could not run at the same time. Sounded right. However, this am I load the free Avast and it is working fine with the other virus program running.

The he started in on how for $179 he could have a tech solve all my problems. I reminded him that all I wanted was for my Avast to work. He sent me three licenses no of which worked.

I guess I will have to bite the bullet for the last three months of my license. I will use the free version. I thought Avast was not one of those bait and switch companies. If some one asks for virus software Avast will not be on the top of the list.

I think you loaded Win 8.1 on top of Avast 8 which are not compatible. I'd suggest a clean install

1. Download the right aswclear and the appropriate program

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe

v8 and below : http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
v9: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe

2. Uninstall Avast by control panel  [If you don't have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
3. Uninstall in safe mode using aswclear (v8 or below) or avastclear (v9) [If you don't have Avast in control Panel just install it]
4. Download and install your version
5. Reboot.

Should all work fine. You can insert license file during the install or after the reboot.
