Avast 2014 Always Shown As "NEW" on All Apps View?
« on: November 12, 2013, 01:15:08 AM »
Hello all,

Anybody else still have Avast 2014 still shown as "new" on the Win 8.1 "all apps" view? No biggie, but I am curious to know why it always remains in a "new" state.

Thanks,

I think that's probably a question you would have to ask of windows as surely it is win8 that dictates what is new.

e.g. what is the criteria for being new and how long does it last as being 'new.'

If the criteria is a few weeks as still being considered as new, then that would technically be correct as in the last few weeks we have gone from 9.0.2006, 9.0.20.2007 and today 9.0.2008.

Hi DavidR,

That you for your response and I would normally agree with your assumptions; however, Avast 2014 seems to be uniquely different than all the other apps; in that, it contains "multiple executables"; whereas, that rest of the apps just lead to a single executable, and IMHO, it is much easier for Windows 8.1 to track their usage status. So, my belief is that (somehow) Windows 8.1 requires all executables to be used before it will remove that new status, and since I only have a minimum install, I may not ever utilize all of the executables available from within the Avast 2014 user directory.

Also, one more important thing I forgot to mention is that I did a clean install of 8.1 (e.g. everything) on 11/3/2013 and Avast 2014 is the only thing that remains marked as new.

So, at this point, I am just curious to know if anyone shows Avast 2014 as "not new" in their all apps view under 8.1?

Thanks again,

plsrepli

EDIT: Also, your comment about the point issue updates may be relevant so I guess we'll have to wait and see on that theory.

You're welcome.

Yes my guess would be that any program update/fix that requires a program update from the interface or manually, resulting in any of the program version/build number changing (9.0.xxxx) may be seen as new.

I don't know what file/s win8.1 would monitor in this regard, but another guess would be the main avast service avastSvc.exe and that is probably going to be updated in any program update.

The other thing to consider is that when a program update is done the executables file properties could possibly be reset to the current version/build number.

Program updates aren't usually as frequent as this, the large program update like 9.0 are likely to have early tweaks and fixes. So we will have to see how this stables out in the win8.1 All Apps listing.

Thanks again for your followup logic DavidR. It does seem to make sense; however, I guess time will tell. Also, I forgot that I just installed Macrium Reflect Free a few days ago, and that is also shown as new, so it will be interesting to see if that disappears eventually. I will update this thread if/when the "new" designation is removed. I will also do the same for Macrium.

However, I would still be interested if anyone "does not show" the new designation on the all apps view as well.

Thanks again,

Hello again DavidR,

One of your theories regarding the expiration of the new designation, after a period of time, was absolutely correct! I proved this by advancing the system clock to 12/4/2013 and the new designation immediately disappeared. Then, when I returned the clock to the correct date and time, the new designation returned. Also, your point issue updates theory may have impacted (e,g, reset) the new designation as well. So, I would say that makes you "two for two" on identifying the root cause of my concern.

Thanks a bunch!

No problem, glad I could shine some light on it, even though I don't use win8.1 ;D

Hi DavidR,

I guess I'm not one to let an issue rest so I just did a clean install of Windows 8.1 and now the new designation for all apps and programs disappears after just the first use. The only program I haven't reinstalled yet is Avast 2014. Because of this, I somehow feel that Avast is/was playing into this issue (some way, somehow) and since the latest Avast 2014 release specifically claims it fixes the following issues, I think I'll just wait a bit and see if Avast provides any more Metro fixes:

Here is the list of major fixes:
* Fixed issues with Metro apps (after update to Win 8.1)
* Fixed occasional problem with playing sounds on the VPS toasters
* Fixed issue with Outpost FW warning („unsigned“ driver)

However, I do agree that I can't tie the two together technically but I can sure see the difference after doing two clean installs (one with Avast and one without) and I can only say that the Metro new designation behaved "differently" after the second install (without Avast). Thanks again.
