Problem after update
« on: January 12, 2014, 05:11:15 PM »
I am currently using an older Dell PC with XP to check my e:mail, do a little light browsing and listen to my CD's in the morning.  I have had problems with the last two times I was told by my Avast software that an update was available.  After the update, I am told a reboot is necessary to install the update.  After rebooting, I go through an endless series of boots and shutdowns.  The first time this happened, I booted in safe mode, uninstalled Avast, re-installed Avast and had the same results.  Finally, I booted in safe mode and did a system restore to before the update.  Yesterday the same problem occurred and the same solution was used.  If the free version of Avast is no longer suited to be used in conjunction with XP, please post this somewhere and do not encourage users to do the update.  I at east have a modicum of PC experience so I figured out a solution.  I can imagine that there are a lot of casual PC users that wouldn't and it would make their PC useless to them.  I have always used Avast on all three of my PC's, but I am considering a change due to this problem.

Avast is working fine with XP (sp3).
You should not upgrade to 2014.9.0.2011 but perform a clean installation.
Do you or did you have other security software installed?

1. Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition

Note : You need to be ONLINE during the install (sometimes online installer works whereas offline doesn't)

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

2. Uninstall Avast by control panel  [If you don't have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
3. Uninstall in safe mode using Avastclear.
4. Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn't) - reboot.
5. Install the version you downloaded.
6. Reboot.
