Slow Single File Scans
« on: January 10, 2014, 06:45:04 PM »
Good Morning,
Wondering if someone might be able to help. Ever since the last program update or two, when I right click a file to scan, it takes sometimes 10-15 minutes before completion. Up until that point, it used to take less than a minute easy. Does anyone know if this has been addressed or if there is a work around in place? Or is it a known issue? Or should I just uninstall/re-install?

Using Windows 7 64 bit in case that needs to be known and currently running Avast Free 2014.9.0.2011

Thanks in advance for any help.

Try a repair...Control Panel>Uninstall a Program>double click "avast">click "repair">reboot  :)

Thanks. Just tried that. Didn't work. It opened up two different boxes like it always does and then takes 10-15 minutes.

I may just end up uninstalling and rolling back two or three versions when it didn't open the two separate boxes and took less than a minute.

Did you update from V8 to V9 via the GUI ?

If so :

Download Avast Uninstall Utility to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free
Avast Pro
Avast Internet Security
Avast Premier
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall Avast via control panel

  • Run the uninstall ltool and accept the reboot to safe mode
  • Once complete reboot your system
  • Reinstall Avast

I may have, I'm not sure. Why, does that make a difference?

Come to think of it, I must have because I have no idea what an "uninstall tool" is and have never gotten an option to ever "accept the reboot to safe mode"

It makes a huge difference. The installation package is much different.
The entire set-up in v2014 is a world of difference from previous versions.

Ok thanks. I might just try that then. Do you know where I can find this uninstall tool then? I assume the option to the reboot to safe mode comes from that tool, and seeing as I've always just updated the program from inside the actual program I have installed, I didn't know such an uninstall tool existed.

Thanks again.

Thanks Essexboy and Para-Noid. Using the uninstall utility worked. Only takes a fraction of a second again to scan a single file. I appreciate the help. I guess I should keep the uninstall utility on my hard drive somewhere and use it every time there's an update, although you all have probably been doing it that way for years, I just figured if you hit UPDATE from the UI when an update was available, that would have worked too and not caused these annoyances.

Good Day.

Generally I only use the uninstall tool for a major version change i.e. 7 to 8, or 8 to 9

Otherwise a GUI update is good :)
