Uninstall AOS via Add/remove and custom uninstallation. Uninstall AOS and do a manual restart.

Do you clear history on exit? Im asking because apparently avast saves settings in a cookie though I am unsure of which one as I myself do not use Firefox.

Not sure about clearing history and I stopped using Firefox a while back and AOS many years ago. Uh... just delete everything list on history and uninstall AOS as I said before.

Firefox GUI>Options>General...choose the page you want Firefox to open upon start-up.
You can disable the "avast online security" extension via "add-ons" in each of your browsers.

edit: additional

@ staticguy  You couldn't have stopped using AOS "many years ago". AOS is new in v2014.
Are you referring to the old WebRep? If so WebRep never opened to "any" page.

I too ran into this flaw once I did a program update. Disabling the Firefox add-on does work, but it is a band-aid solution at best. The AOS plugin intention is good, but very poorly implemented. I hope the program coders fix this extremely annoying flaw with the next program update.

on my laptop, if you right click the taskbsar icon and click firefox it opens without second tab.  if you right-click the desktop shortcut and click open it opens without the second tab.  haven't figured out how to stop the second tab from opening left ouble-clicking the desktop icon or left-clicking the taskbar icon.  hope this helps alleviate some of the frustration with http://aos.avast.com/upgrade/2006 tab.

Dear Avast,
Having been researching this problem, I have seen that there are an alarming number of users that are extremely dissatisfied with your product as a result of the "http://aos.avast.com/upgrade/2006 pop-up-tab" issue. I suggest that you correct this problem as quickly as possible. Otherwise, you will find a large number of your customers have switched to a competitor like AVG. Non-interference is the primary reason that many of us choose and recommend Avast. If we wanted our security system to get in our face all the time, we would be using McAfee!
Thank you
(in other words, it is not our job to fix their stupid ideas)

This is a problem that affects FF28 only, so whilst they are working on a fix you can disable AOS
