Vanishing hard drive space
« on: March 09, 2015, 02:28:00 AM »
My PC has a standard (non-SSD) 500gb hard drive. A few months ago I had at least 200gb free space on the drive. About a month ago the drive was suddenly full. I haven't installed any new programs (of any considerable size) or transferred a ton of files to the drive. So I uninstalled about 30gb worth of stuff I didn't need. I also ran SpaceSniffer (http://download.cnet.com/SpaceSniffer/3000-18512_4-10913555.html) and it could only locate about 220gb worth of files.

Today, that 30gb worth of free space is suddenly down to 4gb and seems to be slowly shrinking. I'm not installing programs or transferring any files on to the drive. SpaceSniffer can still only find about 220gb worth of files.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or if the drive is slowly dying? Any ideas? Thank you.

Figured it out. I had restore point settings allowing up to 250gb of drive usage. There were *a lot* of restore points. Decreased to 50gb and voila, 200gb free.
