system32 dll files showing as virus's
« on: October 30, 2005, 02:52:31 PM »
I downloaded a program from a p2p and each time it reaches the end of the download, it shows kernel32.dll, winsock.dll and wsock32.dll in the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder as being virus's. I searched this forum and instead of going through all over 300 posts I posted this. My apologies if this is a repeat question.  :-[

We really need more information to be able to help fully.
- What detected these?
There is a deceptive trick of placing files in the system folders to trick and stop people from removing them, believing them to be important system files.

- What OS are you using? is it up to date?
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number, e.g. 0436-4 (see about avast!)
- What was the virus name, what was the filename, where was it found
  example (C:\windows\system32\infected-filename.xxx)?
avast takes a copy of these files to have as a backup in case of infection, are you possibly confused because these are in the chest (system files section), this is normal, see image.

- What actions have you taken to try and resolve the problem?
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD - 27" external monitor 1440p 2560x1440 resolution - avast! free  24.8.6127 (build 24.8.9372.870) UI 1.0.818/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security
