Which is your Windows? 98, Me, XP?
Do you use any other antivirus in your computer?

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

Keep posting the results...

Tech, thank you very much for the help :)......I'm running Windows XP (Service pack 2) ..........I don't use any other anti-virus software...My Firewall is Sygate.

I did what you suggested. Went on line and carried out the repair. No go I'm afraid  :-[...........On the log it now shows:
                                         Error in aswChestS: chestStart XMLException27
Error in aswChestC: chestAddFile Error 1753

So, at the moment I am no further forward lol  :-\

Rhumpole, you can test:
1. Going to Troubleshooting tab of settings and change from ODBC to XML into the storage method. Boot.
2. Run ashChest.exe directly from the avast folder.

What do you get?

Rhumpole, how are set your avast! services?
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

I suppose you have to have four avast! services:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner service)
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner service)

The two first of them should be Automatic loaded and the two last Manually loaded.

After that, can you say if you boot after changing from ODBC to XML?

Good morning Tech :)

Yes, there are four services as you described. The first two loaded automatically, the second two loaded manually.

I have rebooted after changing from ODBC to XML.

Thank you for your time and trouble ;)

Tech - Nothing I tried seemed to work! lol......So - I uninstalled Avast! Then downloaded a new copy and re-registered.....Now it's all working! Something must have corrupted it somewhere along the line! ;D

Thank you very much for all your help. It was very much appreciated and I learnt a lot along the way too.

Kind regards,

Rhumpole. :)
